I also have a hypoactive thyroid and have always struggled with weight loss.  Some other women have told me to add a vit D supplement and I have tried that with limited success but my doctor doesn't think there is any link.  Bottom line is that with this condition weight loss is just tough!

Hi Nashtox,

You don't give your age but for your height your BMI in 21.8 and thats put you in the range of being the correct weight.

I'm 65 and on meds for low thyroid too.  I'm about 50+lbs. overweight now but have been dieting for 3 weeks today and have lost 7 lbs.  I've kept a food journal and my calories between 1100 and 1200 per day.  I'm very inactive because of physical limitations.  I'm losing because I have a lot to lose.  My body is more willing to give up the fat.  When I was much younger and thinner it was harder to get the last 10 lbs off.  Your body starts to think you are going to starve it and it holds onto the weight.

Increase your exercise and be careful not to underestimate the calories you take in.  Are you weighing and measuring you food?  It helps you be truthful about what you're really eating.

Stick to it and try not to get too thin.   Laughing    Good luck.

Well, I don't know your age, but at your height and weight your BMI is in the healthy range.  You may be struggling to lose not only because of your thyroid, but also because you're already at the right weight for body.  Perhaps you should take a break from trying to lose weight and focus on maintaining and getting a good fitness plan in place.    The tools on this site to find out how many calories you should be eating to maintain your weight, unless you're under 21.  The tools here aren't designed for teenagers whose caloric needs are higher than adults.

I'm hypothyroid too. Before I was diagnosed is when I put on about 15-20 lbs though and I was extremely frustrated because I was trying to lose weight. But as long as I'm on my medication, I haven't had a problem losing weight.

Have you had your blood tested recently and made sure you're at the right dosage? They had to increase my dosage about 3-4 times in the first 3 years until they had it right. They tested me every 3 months during that time. I'm apparently pretty bad though - I'm on the highest dosage that they allow.

Lastly, are you on Levoxyl or a generic brand? Last visit my doctor said that I should not accept a generic because she read that the dosages have been found to not be as accurate and that minor fluctuations in medication for thyroid disease can make a difference. I didn't corroborate that statement with any further research but told my pharmacy to be sure not to give me the generic (which I had been on). The price is the same.
