My grandmother has hypothyroidism, she has a hard time loding weight also, but all in all she had lost 100 lbs just dieting. She also takes synthroid,  it sucks toi have to go through something that you cannot change that also makes it very hard to lose weight. Have you talked to your dr. to see if there may be a special diet for people with hypothyroidism to do because you just may need somehting especially for your condition. I would def. check it out. sorry if this doesnt help at all, i wish i could say more. good luck!

I'm hypothyroid.... I usually don't have too much trouble unless I'm not taking my meds like I should (I get into depressive periods where I don't take them).  But I do notice that when I have problems it's usually a result of liquid calories (i.e. pop, juice, etc). My current synthroid dosage is pretty low though (0.88 mg) so I think that might be part of why it's not a serious issue for me.
Yes, I have hypothyroidism and have been taking synthroid for over 20 years. My daughter and I started counting calories on Jan 1st. We work out at least 5 days per week for about an hour and use the calorie counting tools here to log everything we eat. It takes a bit of time at first to tag the things you eat regularly, but once you do that it doesn't take much effort. Drink lots of water !! I am 47 and have lost 14 lbs in 10 weeks and she is 29 and has lost 22 lbs. Just a note about the lady who gets depressed and does not take her meds. My doctor yelled at me several years ago and scared the crap out of me saying that uless I wanted to die I'd better no skip my synthroid, so please don't do that.

Hey. I also have hypothyroidism. I've been on Synthroid since I was in my early teens. I didn't enjoy taking it very much and also got yelled at by my doctor who scared the crap out of me saying I was going to die if I didn't take it! eek!

ariesgirly - when do you take your synthroid? I used to take mine at night all the time, but I just noticed some new stickers on my pill bottle, and from reading forum posts on here I've started taking it in the morning on an empty stomach and I think it has made a difference with my weightloss.
Also, I don't mean to bring up other issues, but I noticed in one of your journals you mentioned skipping periods. Have you ever been tested for PCOS? That will also make a difference in your weightloss and missed periods are a symptom of that. Not that everyone who misses them has PCOS, just, you never know!

What is PCOS?

Yep, I'm on synthroid. Started counting cals on here 1/22/08 and excercising regularly and drinking A LOT of water. I've lost almost 20 lbs in about 6 weeks.

I have secondary hypothyroidism (my thyroid was radiated becaused I had Graves' disease (the autoimmune form of hyperthyroidism) and am on 88 mcg of Levothyroxine.  When I'm not taking my medication, I will have trouble losing weight.  I've lost about 80 pounds on here while taking medication.  Someone mentioned that you should take it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.  I've read that they recommend not eating at least an hour before and an hour after taking some medications (this is one of them).

You also should not take it at the same time as some other medications.  You should never take calcium and synthroid at the same time.  Calcium blocks your body from properly absorbing the synthroid and makes it ineffective.

What is PCOS?

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome - basically, cysts on your ovaries... which causes lots of symptoms which, quite frankly, suck - ie. weight gain, infirtility, hair growth, etc.

WOW!!! I have been on levo thyroid medication too and I have been on it since the age of 10 I am now 32. I too find it  hard to lose weight and also didnt no you shouldnt take it with calcium, I take mine every morning on an empty stomach with a glass of milk..... Maybe I should change.

I too have hypothyreosis, and find that if I take my meds as instructed (first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, at least half an hour before eating) I can lose weight fairly normally with diet and exercise.

I have had hypothyroidism for a few years now, and that was part of the reason I gained weight. I gained it on Depakote, but I am not sure if that med messed with my thyroid or not. I don't like the weight gain, but the Depakote was needed desperately.

Maybe your doctor could give you tips on how to  maximize your weight loss potential, as the way we need to do things might be different from the mainstream? It's a thought.

And yes, take the thyroid medicine on an empty stomach with lots of water, and do not eat within about 30 min to an hour of taking it. The doses are really small and this is a way to make sure you get all of it in your system.

I take synthroid and have now for almost 3 years. It was just last month that I really started to put forth the effort to loose all the extra weight I gained from my thyroid. Since 4 Feb 08, I've lost 11 lbs. I keep my calories between 1500-1750 and zig zag them. Every other day I intake on the high side of calories so I'm not taking in the same amount everyday. This will keep your metabolism guessing at what you're doing, and will result in a consistant weight loss. I take my synthroid first thing in the morning, before I eat something, I do 25 minutes of yoga, 8 min abs, shower, then I take my other vitamins like prenatal and calcium. Then I eat. So all in all, it's about an hour or so after my pill that I'm putting anything else on my stomach. However, don't wait too long to eat something, you should always eat breakfast.

Best wishes to you and have fun loosing weight; I know I am!!! :-)

so is it better to take it at night then morning.I was takeing it every morning but thought i start takeing it at night, just trying to lose some of this weight,im takeing synthroid to,100 m.i have been on it 4 months.i walk alot and i watch what i eat,I do everything I can.how long will this be befor I can lose some of this wieght, its very hard to not be able to go to the restroom,.help

If you are really struggling you may want to check out Leigh Peele's Fatloss Troubleshoot or Metabolic Repair Manual.  She specializes in helping people with metabolic and thyroid issues.  I am in the middle of her program now and really enjoy her stuff.  She also has a podcast.  (I should be getting paid for the endorsement LOL)
