My trainer asked me if I had this the other day.. Because she has been training me for going on 12 weeks and I have not seen much change. Does anyone have this and know the symptoms/treatments relative to weight loss? NotE: I have all the symptoms listed on-line except the hair loss, but all day I fee l like I can jst lay down at my desk and take a nap, and I get really exhausted at the gym.
Thanks

Hypothyroidism has other symptoms besides weight-gain. This NHS link outlines many of them http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Thyroid-under-ac tive/Pages/Symptoms.aspx?url=Pages/What-is-it .aspx If you're struggling to lose weight and are very sure that you're not eating too much then you should see your doctor because there are many medical conditions that can make weight-loss difficult. Keep an accurate food diary that you can take along to show a doctor if you do decide to make an appointment.
I had many of the symptoms, took the blood test, and everything came back normal. Unfortunately, I actually wish I'd had it so I'd have a neat packaged reason of why I couldn't lose weight. Turns out I just eat too much over the holidays :) But you should just go get a routine blood test from your doctor. If you can't lose weight and like the other commentor said, you are very sure that you're not taking in too many calories, then you could very well have hypothyroidism. The upside of treating that is that taking care of that takes care of other things, like severe fatigue, depression, feeling down in general, hair loss or dry, brittle hair/nails, poor skin quality, etc... all of which can be caused by hypothyroidism.
check for insulin resistance. i had my thyroid checked and everything was normal. they checked my insulin though and i have insulin resistance. insulin resistance is a huge factor in weight gain and lack of weight loss. it also makes you tired as crap. i started taking medicine for it and cut out sugar and ive lost 8lbs in 6 weeks without exercise. i also have more energy than ever since i started taking medicine and eating less sugar/carbs. definately check that out.
edit: alot of the symptoms for hypothyroidism are similar to those of insulin resistance. everything you listed are symptoms of insulin reistance, adje.
Sometimes if you reduce your calories too fast and too low, your body will slow down your metabolism to prevent "starvation". Everything I've read says to reduce the calories slowly. As a matter of fact, you may actually want to increase your calories a little. If your body is in starvation mode, this will kick it back into gear. Increasing your workout will burn the extra calories. Then you can start to reduce your calories because the less you weigh, the less calories you need. Also, don't rely soley on weight. Weight itself can be water, muscle or fat. You may be retaining water. Get a measure of your body fat percentage. There are several ways you can do that. I stick to a fat measuring scale. It's not as accurate as calipers, but I don't drive myself crazy trying to get an exact number. Good Luck!
I have battled Hypothyroidism for about 15 years. Makes it very hard to lose weight and easier to gain it. I also have skin dryness, headaches, excessive sweating(when not active) and affected fertility. Tired/lack of energy.. Thats just a small portion. A blood test of your TSH and T4 levels (both are needed) can accurately test our thyroid. You will have to have your thyroid tested roughly every 6 weeks for the first year or until you are regulated. Herbal treatments are not good for this condition. webmd.com has some great info as well.
Hope this helps!
