I think I might have hypothyroidism but im not sure.

I have been working out regularily for about a year and a half 3-6 times a week, which wasnt doing anything for me (ie I was still gaining!) So more recently I hired a personal trainer and went to see a naturopath for my eating and have now been exercising WAY harder than before (with my trainer) and eating super healthy. Yet still gaining! I havent lost a lb or an inch! Plus im tired all the time and show some other symptoms of Hypothyroidism.

I was just wondering if there were people on here that have been diagnosed with it and what symptoms you had?

fatigue, hair loss, weight gain, cold intolerance, depression, constipation, etc.

Depression is a big one for me.

A simple blood test will tell if you have hypothyroidism or not.

I was hypothyroid and unmedicated (by my choice, because my numbers weren't really bad and I was nervous about taking Synthroid) for literally years, and now I've been on Synthroid for about a year and a half.

I can't honestly say that the hypothyroidism (or correcting it with medication) did anything one way or the other as far as my weight.  A lot of people say that, but for me personally I'd be lying if I said that was why I was overweight, or that being on meds helped me lose.  YMMV, as I'm sure everyone has a different experience with this.

The other symptoms listed above, definitely.  Also very dry skin and hair, brittle nails, etc.  I still have thin hair at the front of my hairline. :-(

Is there any possibility that you're eating too FEW calories for your activity level?  People talk about that a lot on these forums, and I understand it's possible to not eat enough, have too large of a calorie deficit, and go into "starvation mode" so your body won't allow you to lose weight.  I don't have any experience with this personally, I just mention it because I see it discussed here a lot and it can be an issue for people who work out a lot.

I have borderline hypothyroidism but its literally v.nearly enough for me to take meds so I am having blood tests every 2/3 months now til my doc thinks I can have medication for it. However I have many symptoms including

hair loss, fatigue, depression, constipation, cold intolerance, dry skin, forgetfulness and weight gain.

There are many symptoms for hypothyroidism but these are the most common it might be worth just going to see your GP and asking for a test. Make sure if you are borderline you know exactly where you are because different doctors feel differently about hypothyroidism and some are more helpful than others. Good luck x

Thanks for the replies!

I went and had blood tests done on friday and am just waiting for the results. I have alot of the symptoms typical for hypothyroid like unexplained weight gain, fatigue, sleeplessness, depression, cold intolerance and SUPER dry skin on my face lately...to the point where every hour or less I have to apply cream or it looks like I am peeling from a sun burn...I hate it!

If the tests do come back negative tho, is there something else that could be doing all these things to me?

The only thing I can think of is too few calories.  I had that happen to me and it took a while to get it figured out, then about 4 months before a nutritionist was able to get my weight stabilized so I could lose again.  She put me on a 2000 cal diet.  I can now lose while eating more than before, at about 1400 cal, instead of 1000 - I didn't know that undereating could foil my weight loss efforts.

I'm in the same boat as you and I'm getting tested on Thursday. Here are some of the common symptoms.

Symptoms of Hypothyroidism
  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Weight gain or increased difficulty losing weight
  • Coarse, dry hair
  • Dry, rough pale skin
  • Hair loss
  • Cold intolerance (can't tolerate the cold like those around you)
  • Muscle cramps and frequent muscle aches
  • Constipation
  • Depression
  • Irritability
  • Memory loss
  • Abnormal menstrual cycles
  • Decreased libido
