I heard that it is better to eat less of regular ice cream than eat more of light ice cream.  Is this true?

As long as total calories are controlled-it doesn't matter.  However, the theory that high-fat products are superior to their low-fat counterparts for weight loss is based on the notion that you will end up eating more of a low-fat product due to lack of satisfaction or lack of guilt-the whole "its fat-free so I can eat as much as I want" mentality-and end up taking in higher total calories than if you just had a spoonful of regular ice cream.
I disagree. I'd much rather eat a cup of light ice cream than 1/4 cup regular. The taste isn't compromised all that much, I find, and it's nice to eat a satisfying portion.
The only reason to eat light icecream is that it's got less fat than regular stuff, however there's no point eating light icecream (which basically has half the fat of regular icecream) if you're going to eat twice as much!

Haven't you ever heard the saying "it's got half the calories, so I can eat twice as much!" which pretty much shows how ridiculous it is?
Here's what I think: If I'm going to have a bowl of ice cream, I'm going to want more than 1 little scoop.  That's why they call it a "bowl" of ice cream.  So since I have no self control I just figure a lower calorie option is better for me:)

Try the Edy's Slow Churned light ice cream its 100 calories in 1/2 a cup and its sooo delicious! i had a lot of extra calories yesterday so i indulged and had 1.5 cups and even 2 tbsp of hershey's syrup. it was a great reward and i still met my calorie goal for the day...

I guess it all depends on your definition of what's "better".

I would much rather have 1/2 cup of regular ice cream (that's the standard serving size) than any of the "light" junk they have out there because to me it tastes soooo much better.  Plus, it's usually cheaper, and heck, I know what the ingredients are! If I'm going to indulge, I'd rather have the real stuff.  It doesn't have to be organic, but I prefer to be able to pronounce it. :-)

...is the devil.  I can't stop once I've started eating it! :(

some people want to be able to eat lot's of ice cream; there's something really satisfying about just spooning it out into your mouth. :)

tbh all ice cream is great to me. and i like to eat lots of it - so if it's lower calorie, then much better for me.

I'm in the "eat the best stuff, just less" category.  I'd MUCH rather have 1/4 cup of the richest, simplest icecream they make (pure cream, sugar, and vanilla, and absolutely nothing esle).  One tiny, savored bite at a time.

Same theory with chocolate.  Now that I've developed a taste for the higher quality chocolate, I don't know how anyone stands Hersheys.  Besides, the better chocolate is actually lower in calories and fat!

I love ice cream! As long as you control yourself and measure out your portion, you're fine if it fits in your calories goal. I actually like some light ice creams. I only ever eat 1/2 a cup though because that's all I need. I guess some might have artificial sweeteners and other bad chemicals or something that might make it less healthy, but I'll go for the one with fewer calories if it tastes the same to me. I never get fat free though because it doesn't taste good to me and also, it usually melts really quickly and then you end up eating ice cream soup!
Mmmmmmmmmmmmm Ice cream!!!
to get past my ice cream cravings I love SKINNY COW FUDGE BARS!  they are huge and delicious without the guilt!  You will feel like you totally indulged and had a real treat!

If the actual question is "which is better for you"....not just "which do you prefer"....

Then the main rule of thumb when comparing anything "light" to the real deal is to also compare fat and sugar, sometimes something that is "low fat" will have more sugar, or something that is "light" will have the same amount or more of fat  The 'slow-churned' or 'double-churned' icecreams utilize a new way of making better for you ice cream taste more like the real thing, and that's the kind I typically go for. Found some vanilla the other day for only 80 cal per 1/2 cup!

Personally, I would just eat less of the regular ice cream if I were you.  The only way light ice cream is better is if your only concern is lowering your calorie intake for the day.  Since I think we should be more focused on the quality of what we are feeding our bodies, I looked at the ingredients in regular and light ice cream.  The light has a lot of chemicalsFrown, whereas the re gular ice cream is most often natural ingredients (sugar, cream, things like that).  Just a thoughtSmile.
