Ideas to spruce up plain old canned tuna?

Quote  |  Reply

So I was eating my lunch today, which consisted of canned tuna mixed up with a small amount of mayo, mustard, relish, and a little bit of dill and I thought, how blah is this? So I've come here for ideas! :-D What do you all do to your canned tuna to make it a bit more appealing?

My faves:

* Grey Poupon, diced bell peppers, celery, red pepper flake

* Mayo, dried cranberries, scallions

* Mayo, curry powder, dried mango

I use petite sweet peas (you can just rinse frozen ones and throw them straight in), lots of dill, fat free mayo and chopped boiled egg whites.  I love the peas popping!  I am a texture nut.

On occasion when I'm craving salty, I will go with dill, ff mayo, chopped boiled egg whites, and then add capers, black olives and chopped bell pepper.  Yummy.

I've tried different mustards too.  There is this Jack Daniels mustard that I love for tuna & chicken salads.  I like to add onion too, but my hubbie hates it so I usually spare him.

Everyone has made the Undecided face at the peas until they try it.  Let me know what you think if you do!

I love the mustard too!

My favourite is mixed with cottage cheese & onion and toasted on granary bread or crackers.

salsa!

For me I usually do one of the following:

1) Salsa
2) Soy Sauce
3) Barbecue Sauce
4) Relish

i've been doing mayo, yogurt, onion & celery.

My typical tuna is mayo, mustard, relish but that did get old quick. I like the crunch. I either eat it on a wrap or over lettuce.

I also discovered canned chicken, which is better this way than the tuna.

If you're eating it at home, the taste can be vastly improved just by tossing the tuna in a nonstick frying pan and letting it brown a bit. Then you can at least have a hot meal!

carrots, tomatoes, chicory, fresh cilantro and lime juice - spread on whole wheat crackers, tortillas or bread.

I combine it with salsa, cumin, chili powder, lime, cilantro, and a few dashes of hot sauce for a mexican flare.  Eat it in wrapped in a tortilla with plenty of shredded lettuce and carrots - or over a good veggie salad, mixed with some cottage cheese instead of sour cream.

For asian, I add a tiny bit of sesame oil, chili flakes, soy sauce (I buy unsalted tuna), and dried seaweed (nori, the one you use to wrap sushi).  Sometimes I add fresh cilantro and basil, and sprinkle it with flax seeds.  Eat it over brown rice or mix it with shredded lettuce and wrap into the seaweed sheets.  Goes excellent with raw cucumber slices.

For italian, I mix it with tomatoes (canned or fresh), sweet red pepper, onion, oregano, thyme and rosemary, crushed red pepper flakes, a tiny bit of olive oil.  Sautee it, and add basil and baby spinach at the very end.  Serve it over whole wheat pasta (something like rotini or with ridges to catch the tuna).  Edited to add: I sometimes also put this on top of a whole wheat pita, place it in the oven and sprinkle it with part-skim mozzarella, and make an individual pizza.

Those are some of my favorites!  :)

this may not be very "spicy" but my favorite low-cal way to eat tuna is to mix it with a wedge of laughing cow cheese rather than mayo.

It comes in a few different flavors!

I skip the mayo and eat it plain with chopped walnuts and apples!! Yum!

Sometimes, instead of mayo, I use hummus.

I love celery salt with canned tuna. If I'm making a tuna wrap, my usual combo is: fat free miracle whip, celery salt, pepper, green onions & red/green bell peppers. A bit of lemon juice is good too.

I throw mine in a salad. :)

I do something similar and put the tuna spread (whatever concoction I've come up with for that day) on a whole wheat thin bun and grill it in the oven broiler for a few minutes.  If you can spare the calories a bit of shredded cheese on top is good too.

On a sandwich/wrap, try: Mixing tuna with avocado and raisins. Or avocado and some chopped apple.  Mixed with salad dressing and tomato or cucumber. Tuna, avocado, grated carrot is also pretty good.

Other ideas: Mix with whole wheat pasta, ricotta cheese and sweet peas.

Mix 1-2 servings of tuna with and equal portion plain yogurt, 1/2 cup broccoli, and a few TBS raisins and almonds and a slice or two of red onion (chopped). It sounds kinda weird, but its really good.

cayenne pepper and ketchup. oh please just try before you judge!

Stuffed into a whole wheat pita with lots of mixed sprouts (garbonzo/lentil mix), sunflower or radish spouts, and sliced carrots. That's what i just had for lunch, yum!

And these sound fabulous!
