should I ignore my instructor

Quote  |  Reply

OK so I have only been going to thy gym for 3 weeks and I no very little so got the instructors there to give me a plan to work to. I have 80+ lbs to burn to reach my goal. They have given me a cardio workout that I have been sticking too and my heart rate is way up there when Im doing so I know I'm on the right track. The thing is I have not lost a pound doing it. I am going 4 times a week and the workout lasts about 1hour an no change. I am watching what I eat now too and trying to stick to my 1600 cals but this is very disheartening. I measured myself in-case there was a change there but alas not a bean. Where am I going wrong should I add in some weight training even though my instructor has told me I don't need to?

Any input would be great.

I would add weights, if you don't add weights you could lose weight but your body fat could go up because of a lack of muscle. You should also be keeping your heart rate at about 60% if your max heart rate somewhere between 120 and 150 depending on your age. Weight loss normally will start around week 3-5 so keep it up!
thanks bodyscience and what a quick reply. I have been reading a few more logs on here and am defiantly going to add some weights to my routine.  And if you say that week 3 -5 is when I might start seeing a difference then hopefully next week I will a happy bunny Smile
I have the same issue! Keep in mind some people have bodies that are VERY resistent to change and it can take up to 2-4 weeks for bodies to start to roll.  However once that roll starts its awesome!!!  Its extrememly frustrating for me because it takes A LOT of extremely consistent shocking work to get my body to change and real changes.  Also I tend to lose weight proportionally so I don't notice it right away because it happens in itty bits all over.  By the time the changes are noticable I've moved on to something else thinking what I was doing wasn't working!   The best advise I can give is decide that you are doing this because you want to feel better and live healthier.  Find joy in and success in living one day at a time and don't be a scale watcher.  Last spring I stepped on the scale and was SHOCKED and DISTURBED by what I saw and decided it was totally unacceptable.  I made threw and broke the scale, cried! Then hired a top notch trainer made drastic changes and went to work just trying to feel better.  unfortunately I run out of money for the trainer and after 20 sessions I didn't think it was making a difference because I was wearing the same size pants.  They weren't so tight but they were still the same size!  I was upset all over again.  I got a new scale and realized I had lost 35lbs!  I couldn't believe it.  The point is it takes time and tweeking but don't give up hope, give up too soon and don't be a scale watcher.  Go more by the way you feel.  Hope that helps
I need a workout at least every other day in order to lose weight.  I also have to drink enough water, get enough calories, and eat a reasonably balanced meal.

1600 calories with a hard workout sounds like you might be stalled because of your deficit.  Try upping it to 1800 (200 more of some kind of protein rich food) on work out days.

I definitely agree with trinaxxl. You should up your calorie level when you work out or do any intense physical activity. 1800 would be good, even up to 2000 depending on how tall you are. It may be scary to up your calories, but I'm sure you will see a budge in the scale if you do. :)

Remeber that body holds on to water after heavy workout.I have found that immediately after or aday I would put on wt and then it will eventually show.Try tweaking your diet too low carbs ,high proteins or even taking in more cals the day u exercise and less the day you dont.

Keep it up .Give it couple of wks.
