I'm All Over the Shiratake Noodles!!!!!!

Quote  |  Reply

What a little gem of a find these Shiratake noodles are!!!  I saw someone mention them and also a reference to Hungry Girl.  I went out and bought 6 packages at Whole Foods today for only $1.29 each.  I got the fettucine style and the Spaghetti style.  I'm quite fond of pasta but generally try to stay away from what I call "The White Starchies" because a normal serving size is really unsatisfying and then there are all the carbs, etc.  Just not a good thing for me I have learned.

So I got home from the store and immediately boiled some up because I was so excited about the fact that the whole package only has 40 calories, 6 carbs and 4 grams of fiber.  However, I had not prepared any toping in advance so I just drizzled a tiny bit of sesame oil on them to give an asian flavor.

They were SO VERY FETTUCE LIKE I COULD NOT TELL THE DIFFERENCE!!!!

So now I am avidly seeking Lowfat Healthy recipes to top my noodles if anyone can share them please please do.  I am going to try and invent a nice lowfat clam sauce with chicken broth, clams and their juice, parsley, garlic, white wine, scallions, thickened with a bit of cornstarch...

I am so excited about this find.....  Please help me with your favorite lowfat pasta sauces or other preparations!!!  Thanks so much!!

I like to make a spaghetti with them just by sauteeing some onion and mushrooms, adding a pack of boca ground burger and 1/2 cup of tomato sauce. add salt, pepper or whatever seasonings. put that on top of the noodles and add 2 teaspoons of parmesan cheese for just 20 extra cals. so good. I also like to just cut some raw chicken and cook it on the stove. once it is pretty much done add some frozen stir fry veggies and put that on top with soy sauce. I think hungry girl has her own fettucine alredo recipe on her website. haven't tried it yet though
LOVE the noodles!  I usually eat them with a little fat free sour cream with some dill or salt/pepper to make a creamy fettucinni sauce.  You could also toss them with chicken and spaghetti sauce!  I also like to use a bit of EVOO and basil to make a pesto and throw some chicken on there.  ALSO, try to pan fry them in low sodium soy sauce for a chinese noodle dish!  Best of luck!
Thanks a lot, really great ideas!  I loved these noodles so much that I went back to the store and cleaned out their remaining stock!  I now have 16 bags in my fridge!!!  I'm so excited about this find!
oh how I love them. My Whole Foods only had 2 bags left when I went for my latest batch. It does seem like people are catching onto them.
I make a... I don't really know what to call it, I guess a noodle/spinach pizza?
I drain & cut the noodles up & mix them with a package of frozen spinach [thawed & drained], 3 egg whites, & a lot of garlic & onion powder.
Spread that into a pie plate, cook for about 35 minutes at 350 degrees. Then, I add 1/4cup of tomato sauce on top & put it back in the oven for about 15 more minutes [depending how crisp you like your food, just keep an eye on it.]
& the beauty is that you could modify this thousands of ways- add cheese, other veggies, etc.
YUM.
i've only tried the angel hair, but my fave recipe so far is similar to hungry girls fettucine alfredo recipe

1 package noodles (40)

2 tbls. real sour cream (60)

2 tbls parmesan cheese (40)

1 wedge laughing cow light (35)

That starts you out with a whole bunch of yummy, creamy, cheesy noodles for 175 calories! then you can add whatever you want! i like chicken and broccoli!

Here is one of my favorites

A little cooking spray and sautee onion, red pepper and garlic together.  Once close to being done throw in a little sun dried tomato and artichoke hearts with some shrimp and cook until shrimp are done.  Mix with pasta and top with a little parmesean cheese and eat up.

One of my favorites!!!

Thanks for the super ideas! Today I played it safe but made a  yummy lunch that was also quite filling.

One package of the Tofu Shiratake Spaghetti style noodles (40 cal), 6 Lowfat Turkey Meatballs Foster Farms (320 Cal) , 1 Cup Low Sugar Spaghetti Sauce from Hunts (70 Cal).

Total was 430 calories!  I'm still full, but not overstuffed and feeling really satisfied.

Our Whole Foods didn't seem to carry them, I am really eager to try these! Which section of Whole Foods are they in? I tried noodles, Asian, Etc...

Has anyone ordered them online?

Thanks!
dccd i haven't been able to find them in any stores (if they do have them in your whole foods it would be in the refrigerated section, near the tofu). i ordered mine from:

http://www.locarbu.com/catalog/

they have really reasonable shipping! i had a really good ordering experience with them, and plan to use them again for sure.
Jules thank you for the info and link! I didn't think to try the refrigerated section...

I can't wait to try them!!

This will direct you to shirataki noodle recipes.

I've avoided them even though I love pasta because I remember reading that they smell bad or you need to wash them thoroughly or something? anyone have any input on smell and taste??

I didn't notice any smell.  Some people say to rinse them before cooking.

What I didn't like was the slippery, chewy texture that some people seem to like.  I just couldn't get past it.

$1.29, l'm jealous, l pay $2.69 at the whole foods market here, not fair :(, but besides that, l love love love em, l make the trader joe's wholewheat spaghetti with flax for the family and l eat the tofu noodles l can't even tell the difference. Not chewy and no funny smell, my husband even tried it once!

I like mine with carbonara, but I guess bacon isn't "low fat." I can tell you this: you are severely missing out.

Hey just wondering how long these noodles are good for? I bought two bags of noodles and havent tried them yet. How long will they last if I like them and stock up?

just as a note for anyone living in Edmonton...

they're available at Lucky 97 market, in the far back left hand corner.  i want them for hungry girl recipes too!  i am absolutely in L-O-V-E with that book and her website...

the eggs bene-chick is the best breakfast ever.

I buy mine at an Asian market.  Super cheap ($1/package) and they always have tons of them in stock.  If you have an Asian food store where you live check it out they have all sorts of awesome low cal foods.

I too, had a little trouble finding them.   I read about them and didn't realize they were in the cold case.  I was looking for them with the Pasta and Dry Noodles.  They are in the refrigerated case.
