I'm All Over the Shiratake Noodles!!!!!!
What a little gem of a find these Shiratake noodles are!!! I saw someone mention them and also a reference to Hungry Girl. I went out and bought 6 packages at Whole Foods today for only $1.29 each. I got the fettucine style and the Spaghetti style. I'm quite fond of pasta but generally try to stay away from what I call "The White Starchies" because a normal serving size is really unsatisfying and then there are all the carbs, etc. Just not a good thing for me I have learned.
So I got home from the store and immediately boiled some up because I was so excited about the fact that the whole package only has 40 calories, 6 carbs and 4 grams of fiber. However, I had not prepared any toping in advance so I just drizzled a tiny bit of sesame oil on them to give an asian flavor.
They were SO VERY FETTUCE LIKE I COULD NOT TELL THE DIFFERENCE!!!!
So now I am avidly seeking Lowfat Healthy recipes to top my noodles if anyone can share them please please do. I am going to try and invent a nice lowfat clam sauce with chicken broth, clams and their juice, parsley, garlic, white wine, scallions, thickened with a bit of cornstarch...
I am so excited about this find..... Please help me with your favorite lowfat pasta sauces or other preparations!!! Thanks so much!!
wow shitake mushrooms sounds awesome. at home i have other soba noodle varities such as spinach soba, carrot and tomato soba and GREEN TEA soba noodles. if anyone ever finds these buy them cause its soo much better than normal soba. i've also heard of pumkin soba noodles but i have yet to find them.... now i have to find these mushroom ones too! oh well just means more organic shopping! yay!
I ordered mine online at asianfoodgrocer.com. They only come in blocks of like 10 or 20 though, so it's kind of a gamble. I like them, but don't use them very often. I'm trying to find more ways, though. I kind of keep forgetting about them. So far I mostly just pair them with some chicken stock and shredded chicken. I want to try the alfredo though. I made my own alfredo with normal sauce but it was still an insane amount of calories.
can you get them in England?
I ordered a pack of a dozen or so packages online. Totally worth the shipping- I got them very quickly. I have only made them once. I sauteed broccoli, red peppers, onions and garlic, cajun seasoning, a little bit of chicken stock and added the noodles. They pick up the flavor pretty easily.
I live in Japan, so shirataki is a really common food for me. Japanese people usually eat them in one-pot soups called nabe. Put some dashi soup stock in a pot, and add shirataki, shiitake mushrooms, tofu, chinese cabbage, green onions, chicken, whatever you want really. It's great on cold days, super filling, and healthy. You can experiment with different flavors too, like kimchi, miso, curry, etc.
