The weekend is the worst for me! I eat everything I'm not supposed to. I drink wine and eat chocolate with it... I'm always hungry. It's easy for me to stay eating healthier during the week, because my day is very structured, but on the weekend...it's not so structured. Since it's winter and freezing out... can't walk or do any activities outdoors, so we stay in- watch TIVO or movies. And then get hungry and get burritos, or go out for breakfast skillets or get wine and chocolate. Usually if we go out for breakfast, we'll skip lunch, then be ok for dinner. But yesterday...ate my normal breakfast; went to the movies (ate Jr. Mints), then had nachos and burritos for dinner. I gained 2.75 pounds in 1 day. I know I have the choice of what to eat, but I'm so sick of being good all week, I tell myself it's ok if I'm a little bad on the weekends... ARRGHHHHHH

Does anyone have any suggestions on either eating on the weekends, or some activities or things to do during the day when its cold (Chicago weather is terrible)??

I am with you, weekends stink! It' so hard to be good on the weekend. Especially since Sunday has always been our "big breakfast day". I spend a lot of time on here reading what other people write about different things. It kind of takes my mind off of the food. And, I also read the labels on everything I eat before I eat it, if I can see how many calories are in and fat, etc. sometimes that right there is enough to make me say no. I want so much to loose this 25 lbs and keep it off. I just ask myself is it worth the short term satisfaction for the long term weight I will carry? And, then of course like everyone I have those days where I answer yes to that question, then feel like pooh about myself later. But, everyone here has told me to just keep going and "tomorrow is another day", so that helps. If, I screw up today, I still have tomorrow. And, I am with you on the cold, we are in Missouri (or Misery as I like to call it). My hubby's in the Army so this is not our home state, and I really want to go back to Texas where it's WARM all the time! I am not liking this cold, I do like to walk, but I really haven't been able to force myself to go do it in the cold. Good luck to you. Don't know if this helped or not. shell

I must say that I empathize with you completely! It's so hard on the weekend to stay good, especially when you spend most of your weekend vegging on the couch because it's too cold to be outside! But just so you know, most of that 2.75 pounds you gained was just water weight. The nachos and burritos probably had a lot of sodium in them, which made you retain water. More than likely, give it a few days and you'll be back to where you were on the scale.

Best advice for weekend eating is to plan ahead! Make sure you have healthy breakfast foods--egg whites, turkey bacon, low-fat cheese, etc.--and make sure you have healthy snacks--veggie sticks, hummus, light popcorn. If you go out to eat, it's OKAY! But try to eat something similar to what you eat during the week so you don't completely blow it every weekend. When we go out, we'll eat mediterranean food or grilled fish and still feel like we've been healthy.

I hope this helped a little! Good luck to you!
Thanks! I love Hummis... but I usually get pita chips with it... what do you usually eat with it??
Hi There,

Believe me I empathize with the cold, I'm in Toronto.... okay so any other Canadians are laughing at me, and I can't compete with anyone from New Brunswick, but there's a very good reason that I'm a city-Canuck.

What I do.... and this is not for everyone.... is I give myself one of the weekend days (usually Saturday) as a "free day".... I had to ask myself am I the kind of person who, if I don't try all the time and I allow myself little "cheats" will simply not follow through.... or, am I the type of person that needs little structured "cheats" to ensure that I don't cheat the rest of the time.

I know that I need to work on my psychology around "diet" and "cheat" etc... but what I have come to terms with is that if I can have one day away from the numbers and the counting that I will gain weight in that day (mostly water weight), but I will be within my calorie range and on healthy food for the other 6 days....

I've tried doing it 7 days a week, and by week 3 or 4 I'm usually consistently cheating all the time.

It's slower, you have to give yourself the ability to gain the 2.75lbs (or in my case it was 2.2lbs last saturday and 2.8 lbs this weekend) and loose it again.

It goes up and down for me but I'm on a general downwards trend, and I'm not "srewing up" at any other time so I feel over all pretty positive.

Just a note this approach will not work if your are the type of person that once you give yourself the inch you end up sliding downhill and taking a mile.... but if you can have just the one day it's been a real life saver and stress saver for me.
Will Power ladies.....just plain ole will power what saves the day.....huggers
I would like to suggest you find an activity to keep you busy and out of the house. Find some structure for the weekends to keep yourself from being bored and tuned into the television. If you don't like to walk in the cold try walking the mall. Our local mall has the floors logged for distance for indoor walkers.

The weekends are REALLY bad for me too. I live in florida where it is nice all the time, and I still dont do anything on the weekends! how lazy!!! Some posted about hummus...I love it too! it is amazing with pretzels, and not to bad with celery.
I am going to add you as a friend, if thats ok!
Good luck!

If you can do a home renovation project. It will keep you busy, burns a lot of calories, can be inexpensive if you plan it right (paint isn't that much) and it will give you a double bonus. You'll have a pretty new room or area in your house and you will have squeezed in some exercise.

We bought an old victorian fixer upper last year. The price couldn't be beat - but we knew why LoL. I must say it has definitely helped keep me active because there is always a project or twelve in the works ;).
hummus again....d78 you are a brave girl...thats all I gotta say...brave...giggles...huggers to the "hummus" crowd
I love hummus as well... I guess it is not the worst thing in the world to eat...... I an very frustraded as well I do very well all week long when it comes to saturday I have a hard time saying no to a cocktail and apetizers ... it sucks... we are very social... I am to the point where I want to hibernate and not answer the phone to avoid the cocktails and apetizers...
Ive never had hummus, always wanted to taste it, but the chickpea kinda freaks me out. It sounds like something nasty that a chicken does.

Any way Im the same on the weekends. But Ive decided to approach it this way. I know my weekends are relaxed and nothing like my weekdays. So if I am very good for five days, two days of badness wont kill me, honestly, and I cant do enough damage to put me back to square one. I give myself a break. For some reason, knowing this ahead of time sort of gives me permission to relax and not worry so much about what I eat on S/S.
Believe it or not, Im so conscious of what I eat during the week, that it kind of just carries over through the weekend. Now Im not saying Im an angel, oh no, quite the contrary. At least one weekend out of the month I know Im headed for Krispy Kreme, those are pure sin cakes, which is probably why they're they best when they're hot. But to my credit, instead of eating a half dozen like I normally would, I can only eat 2 or 3. Three being the definite limit. So Im kind of strict, kind of, during the week, and I do pretty well, as long as Im busy. So on the weekends I dont beat myself up. When I do this, I dont panic or have mad cravings. But if I really want something that may have absolutely no nutritional value whatsoever, except maybe a sugar high, I get it. And when Sunday evening comes I know I need to get back in gear, so I let the planning begin.

I tell you my mindframe is changing a great deal. Instead of 'I gotta have it', Im starting to feel more like, ' Sure you can have it, but do you really want it?' 7 times out of ten I can do without it. I think thats pretty darn good for someone who hates to feel denied, and hates to have her choices taken away.

For activity, if you have a YMCA, join it. They always have goo gobs of stuff(classes, games, seminars, massages, wonderfully relaxing massages) going on even on the weekends.
Krispy Creams...I am so glad that store closed 20 miles away from my home..yeah...I really like those also but I just would not allow myself to visit that store.

Hummus....try it ...I did...I dont care of it but many people do and that would be a good appetizer also. (heaving but you dont see that)

As for the weekend overeating thing and allowing yourself the weekend to overeat I really dont think that is a good idea. I know that you have the will power throughout the week but I also think it should carry over each and everyday. I think you would feel better and you will keep the weight off after your goal has been reached. I am not saying dont treat yourself now and then with a small piece of your favorite thing because I eat what I want to basicially but just dont go over my calorie allowance. So on the weekend go ahead and eat something you like but dont go over you calorie allowance it will make you feel more in control of what you eat. I know the weekends are when you might eat more but dont ...do more...giggles...go out ....go visit a friend...go get a good book to read....go for a walk even if it is cold a short one will do ya good...call someone on the phone...write a letter and surprise someone....email me...giggles....I will email ya back...giggles...find a hobby...I like to scrapbook and it is time comsuming but so fun and I dont even think about nibbling at all....you can do it...huggers to my weekend nibblers....
beckab00,

How about saving up a few calories each day for the weekend. Have a planned "feast" on the weekend.

keep up the good work, don't give up!

Karen
~~Karen thats exactly what I do..especially if I have an event to attend and dont want to be so preoccupied with what to put in my mouth opposed to enjoying the festivities~ I plan ahead and short myself @ least 100 cal each day..so on the week end i dont have to worry about over doing it..since i have sacrificed thru out the week..

good luck ladies and GOD bless..
Hi all, I'm new here, as of today. I've lost 25 lbs in the last 8 months and kept it off, but I've got 40-50 more to lose. I'm a college student living on campus 4 days of the week, and since I have to buy my own food, I do well with the dieting while I'm up here. The problem is when I go home for the weekend. My family does NOT eat healthily in the least, and I'm not about to go buy my own food (like I said, i'm a college student ... a very POOR college student) when there's food sitting there waiting to be eaten. Weekends are my worst times not only because of this, but because it's the only place I've got a scale. I log my weight loss when I come home for the weekend, and then it's "ok" for me to eat a li'l more that weekend (though it's really not), because of my progress. What happens though, is that I eat higher calorie food with more fat content than I'm used to, n there goes my whole week's worth of progress. Any advice on how to deal with my weekend downfalls??
OOOhhh Karen I love that idea, save points for the weekend!! Its like saving for shopping.

ReadChick- I know what you mean. I lost most of my weight, the first time, when i was in college. I was 224, wanted to get down to 190, lost 20 pounds. I had all of these resources at my disposal and within walking distance of my apartment, so all I had to do was do it. But when I got home for the summer, man, everything seemed to disappear, support system, resources, everything. On top of that I met my first love that summer, and you know what happens when you're in love. You're happy and you spread out.
readnchick...Lurleen here....I know you are a "poor" college student but I think you need to borrow the scale and take them back with you to your dorm. Since you say your family does not eat well, I bet you a dollar that they dont weigh either. So ask for the scale, slip it in your dirty clothes bag and off it goes back with you to school. Now as for eating when you get home. Home is where you need to relax but not to binge out. So make a plan that you have to do on the weekend. Go for a walk each day, make plans with a family member to go get a healthy lunch. Oh and guess what sometimes you might even salvage a low calorie lunch or dinner at home. Look in the cupboards. Be choosey. Eat half cups of things. Dont eat junk food by the handfuls. Instead of enjoying the food at home enjoy your family visit home. huggers...I know its hard but girl you can do it.
