I'm annoyed at Calorie Counter.
This may seem strange, but sometimes I get annoyed with calorie counter.
I feel like I'm looked at as an underweight here. Like I did my BMI and it said I was underweight at 5' 1 and 105 pounds. I am 19.8. On medical charts I believed underweight was under 18.5.
SO thats annoying. I don't know about the other women out there that are similar to my height and weight, but darn it I just wanted to get that out there.
Like the people who binge here are helped and encouraged with the people who are considered "underweight" or "skinny enough" are frowned about.
Just my two cents.
How old are you? The CC's calculators are set to adults, which means >20 years old.
Kids are different.
Frowned about? Hm, I never noticed any o' that... Most of the people that are underweight or skinny enough are encouraged to do other things like maintain, gain weight so they're at a healthy weight, and strength train.
CC is here to promote a healthy lifestyle, and people who are on a healthy BMI are encouraged to maintain and try strength training if they feel "fat" because that would help them more then losing anymore weight. People who are underweight are encouraged to gain weight so that they aren't underweight anymore. Why? Because it's dangerous for your health to be underweight. Bingers are encouraged to stop, of course, no doubt. :P The only thing that is frowned upon is if someone seeks to continue their dangerous actions here.. whether it be restricting your calories to ridiculously small amounts, or to be in a competition of "who can binge more". Or.. something. o.o I haven't really heard many bingers talk about how they want to continue that lifestyle, haha.
But on the BMI chart note, twilitwing is right. CC's tools are made for people over 21.
Just for future reference:

This calculator is for anyone under 21. It includes calories for peeps under 21 too. :) Try using that to see if you're underweight or not.
I'm 5'1 and 105 pounds too!
I think your body composition also makes a difference - I look very healthy and athletic from my thighs down, but I don't hold weight very well on the collarbones or chest because I'm a pear shape.
And instead of having an online calculator determine where you are at, I'd rather seek out advice from a doctor. If your doctor thinks you're underweight, then you probably are. If your doctor thinks you're at a healthy weight and that you look fine, then you probably are.
5'1" and 105...
I guess we can all find thigs to get annoyed about.
For instance I have a problem with people that fit societies norrm of height and weight and didn't balloon up as I did to a grotesque (on me) 345 pounds at 5'8", having the timerity to actually take the time to write down that they are discouraged that CC thinks they might be thin enough.
I am on my way down in weight and was thinking this morrning how good I was doing and how motivated I feel that I had hit 327lbs, and then...
You start your whining about being THIN ENOUGH!! SHUT UP! and go find a better calculator or average yourself across several. BUt be thankful that you don't have to leave the house today knoing that someone somewhere is going to find you physically disgusting. Just shut up and be thankful.
Good for you novone! 18 lbs. and counting! I totally agree with you on that post and I hope that you keep up the good work.
I'm sorry for making you feel threatened. I dont believe that is at all fair of you. Honestly, this place should be a place of support not one where anyone maintaining or losing should be told to "shut up."
I'm sorry for the way society makes you feel. Really. But thats not my fault. I'm glad that you are losing weight. It's hard. I lost 20 lbs. I'm sorry that my weight didn't creep on me. I'm also sorry that my weight loss just isnt as large as yours needs to be.
You think just because hailtothetheif and I are 105 that we dont still feel pressure? That we still dont feel quite right with ourselves sometimes?
I'm not sure how you gained the extra pounds either. Was it just from eating too much and losing the will to care anymore? Was is stress, depression, and thyroid condition? If you look at any of those they dont seem to be my fault.
You too shearagle.

Calm down. No one is telling you to shut up and stop whining about being overweight. Ever heard the phrase, treat others as you would like to be treated?
This information might help you understand why CC labels you underweight whereas other sites don't. Medically speaking....
- BMI 20 -25 is classed as a 'normal healthy weight-range'
- Below BMI 19 is when medical problems are most likely to appear e.g. periods stop.
- Below BMI 18.5 is classed as 'clinically underweight'.
What you can take from this is that between BMI 20 and 18.5 is a grey area medically and further observations are needed. Someone can be in this zone and be quite healthy i.e. well-nourished, regular periods, normal calorie intake, mentally well-balanced..... those people are fine. Others in this zone can be unhealthy i.e. constantly dieting, missing periods, malnourished, depressed, anxious.... those people are not fine. CC members reading posts from people in this latter group will - quite rightly - encourage them to stop dieting, just the same as they should encourage a binge-eater to stop bingeing.
So if your BMI is 19.8 you are just below normal. If you are in good health, not dieting and your body is not exhibiting signs of stress you are OK. If, however, you're only maintaining that weight through calorie restriction, excessive exercise and if your body is struggling then it's too light.
Just my two cents.
I'm not quite sure what that last bit was supposed to mean, but I'll just decide it's you being friendly gi-jane.
My family members all are super petite runs in the family I guess. I inherited a good metabolism and I'm pretty young in comparison to a forty year old so that helps keep me slim.
For the record, I'm happy, toned, and eating very regularly (don't want to whack up my metabolism!) I dont believe in dieting, but I do believe in keep a healthy lifestyle. Fruits, veggies, and whole grains are my main foods. I'm not the biggest milk fan so I only have that with cereal. Meat and eggs are hard to come by (and sometimes too expensive for me) so I get that maybe three times a week. I use nuts/peanut butter to attain most of my protein needs.
So that is a healthy diet without me being a person who suffers from an ED or anything near that. I usually eat at least 1,500 (don't really count, but I assume it) or 2,000.

I was not irritated but now I am... First off you are accusing people of talking down to you or whatever you said but I have never seen this? Second you automatically have a tone thinking gi-jane was being rude you didnt have to "assume" she was being friendly nothing she said was rude or out of line at all. Also just out of curiousity why are you on a website called "calorie count" if you dont count calories? Just kind of sounds like you are rubbing it in others peoples faces that you say you are thin..
i'm beginning to wonder what your real height and weight are ;) just sayin
you sound like you eat COMPLETELY NORMALLY, so being 105 pounds is completely fine.
my friend is four foot something and 60 lbs. and she's perfectly fine. she eats more than me and i'm 5'5, 128 lbs, and completely un-toned. Dx
I don't count the calories on here. I'm on here because I like talking to other people my age about insecurites, body image, and fitness. Didn't realise I had to show a picture of myself. If I did I can't because this stupid site doesn't let me put pictures up. Hopefully, I'll figure it out and then you may see for youself. Seesh!
Thanks for the compliment. Yea, I agree this is a normal weight. You sound great yourself!! :)
Hello all you haters. I am claudb89's twin sister and trust me when I say that she is what she says she is. She is honest and to all of you who are just attacking her for no reason, need to find something else to do with your time. It's really too bad, a site that promotes community and support turns out to have people that do the complete opposite.
One more thing. I have lost 20 pounds and so has my sister. We work out every friggin day to get to where we are now. We watch what we eat and when everyone else in our college is drinking we choose not to because that isn't part of a healthy lifestyle. We have put a lot of effort into being healthy and looking our best. Please don't try to sabbotage our efforts because you aren't where you want to be. You will get there too, but don't get angry and yell at people who are, that is just totally unfair.
My sister and I have insecurities just like every other girl. We aren't perfect and we never will be. Perfection is unattainable. We sometimes still see our old selves in the mirror, even though we know that we aren't like that anymore. We still have our days when we feel fat and bloated, just like every other person.
Although I am not a "young" CC'er (I am 33), I understand what you're saying claud and have often felt the same way. What works for me is this- don't share your weight in public forums.
Like you, I'm here for the community support, advice, and just to chat. And I do so very happily and peacefully now that I have stopped posting my (healthy range) stats.
Based on personal experience, I have found that if you have a BMI between 18.5-20, it may be suggested to you that you should try lifting weights and eating maintenance if you still feel you have weight to lose, because you are likely "skinny fat" (as I admit to being!).
Disclaimers and my personal opinion.
I am in no way promoting those who are unhealthy to withhold their stats to receive support for their unhealthy habits though.
And I have read many replies from gi-jane over the past year+ and have found her to always be accurate, honest, and caring with her replies. By caring I don't mean she sugarcoats the message, but it she didn't care she wouldn't bother to post.
*added that last paragraph cause I have no desire for anyone to tear me a new one! ;)
peace out
You are so right qmwillcand. I shouldnt post that stuff.
I'm not skinny fat. Well, at least I dont think I am. I run 20+ miles a week and weight train, and before I got into running I ice skated 12+ hours a week. There is nothing necessarily wrong with being skinny fat, as long as your doctor thinks that you are okay.
I think I feel like I have weight to loss because I'm trying to be "perfect" which is ridiculous. It's all up in my head, ya know? I usually pretty self-confident, however every once in a while I look at myself in the mirror and go "I'm feeling chubby." Sometimes my mind says stupid things haha.
Since you're doing the weight training, I'm sure you know that by doing so you're burning calories even at rest. As you continue to lift, and the fat burns off, although your muscles will increase in size and you may stay at the same weight, you will be slimmer because muscle mass is more compact than fat.
I think everybody has those days when they feel less than confident. Just put on something that you know you look totally hot in- that'll banish those insecurities!
Stay healthy and don't listen to your mind when it says stupid stuff :)

Seconded. I'm a huge fan of pretty lingerie as a mood booster. It rocks!
i think that 18.5 and under is considered underweight for the states and the WHO considers 20 and under underweight.
which seems strange because i would have to weigh 120 at 5'5" which seems like kinda a lot for my. maybe it's cause i have a small frame but even if i totally stuff myself everyday i usually can only get up to 115 max.
Well BMI isn't really that great for measuring how healthy you are.. It doesn't take into account the composition of your body mass at all! I.e. two people with the same BMI, say 28, would both be considered overweight. But in reality one of them is sedentary and has never been active and hence has a very high body fat percentage. The other person (an athlete) has much more muscle and less fat, but still the same BMI as the high fat% person. So according to BMI they are both overweight when in fact the athlete is perfectly healthy whereas the other person is unhealthily overweight. One should also take into account that fat is lighter than muscle tissue and hence the composition of the body mass is even more significant!
