I'm going out for a breakfast at a cafe tomorrow..

And I'm not sure how to count the calories. I'm probably going to have 2 eggs, some bacon and maybe a hash brown. I'm not sure on the drink, I usually don't drink calories and have water with my normal breakfast but Ill probably get some 'latte' or cappucino or something because I've never had one.

I'm keen on not splurging, I would like to keep my brekkie to 750cals and I'm usually fine on 3-400cals. I generally don't think of breakfast as a meal, merely something to start the day off and find the idea of going out for breakfast as meal a bit weird, but it's being shouted as an end-of-year celebration thing.

I'm unsure how to count the calories because I'm not really sure what the typical cafe would cook the bacon in, so I'm asking for a rough estimate of what you'd think my probable breakfast would add up to.

Plus later on there's a bbq, I'll probably not be hungry so just have a sausage and buttered piece of bread. =350/450cals?

Thank youuu

2 eggs  = 140, plus 1 tbsp butter = 100

1 mcdonald's hashbrown = 130

2 pieces of carl's jr. bacon so i'll assume 4 pieces= 90

nonfat latte = 80-100 w/out added sweeteners

I would estimate about 600 calories or so.

I would say it would defintely be higher than 600.... if you look up Denny's (which is typical diner type food) they list their calories - bacon is actually closer to 200 calories for four slices.

The additional calories at a diner come from the fact (as well as at a deli which my family owns and I've worked at in high school) is the eggs and hash browns are traditionally cooked in the bacon grease not butter just because it is less expensive and more readily accessible, being recycled from the bacon cooked.  Cooked at home yourself the way chrissy described it would be in that calorie range... but for Denny's Two Egg Breakfast (which is just two eggs, hash browns and bread of choice) it is around 800 calories.. and that's before you add any meat

Eeeew...diners are icky. Since she's not having "a bread of choice" then I think 800 is a good estimate since breads are usually around that much. Thanks for clearing up my mistake. I figured a nice "cafe" would be more comparable to home cooking than a place like denny's is all. My mistake :)

That is the problem eating out anywhere - not knowing exactly what is going into your meal!  But now a days, places are usually very accomodating (more so at a nice cafe like you said than a chain like denny's) so if you request to not use grease in any of the cooking (opt for a cooking spray instead, everywhere has them) and to substitute egg whites or turkey bacon instead of the full cal options, you'll save some more that way and be able to enjoy the extra piece of toast guilt free!

Most restaurants do their cooking on a flat top grill. Pan fried bacon is 30 calories per slice, not a lot, but it's all fat calories and normally no fat is added in cooking. 2 eggs could run anyhere from 80 to 120 calories each depending on the size, so assume large and count 200 for two eggs. Stay away from juice and have tea or coffee with sweet & low or equal. If you have a latte, ask for skim milk and figure about 80 calories at least. So 2 bacon, 2 eggs and the fat to cook them in and a latte should be under 400. Stay away from the fried hash brown potatoes, they are death to a diet. But if you can't, eat only a half cup which would probably add another 200.

I ditto that. I worked in a real old-fashioned diner many years ago, and we actually cooked all the eggs, etc., in lard - yes, lard. We kept a pitcher of it right on the grill to keep it liquidy, and poured it on, and then put the eggs right in it! Can you imagine? Gross!

She said "cafe" which is a bit different than a diner I think. Cafes typically have lighter fare, at least in LA and you wouldn't even be able to order half of the fatty dishes you'd find in a diner. More like a spa menu really.
