I'm a carb addict!!

Quote  |  Reply

I eat too much carb, I can't seem to have a meal without pasta, rice or bread!!...

i try every once in a while, but the prospect of say having just veggies and a meat or fish is so unappealing that i'd rather forgo eating all together..

instead im capable of consuming huge amount of pasta or rice.. i have switched to whole wheat pasta though, is that much better than white pasta really? the pb is they're so calorie dense that whenever i have pasta, am screwed for the rest of the day because it just ate up a huge part of my calorie allowance.

Anyone with same pb?

I'm the exact same way. When I try to limit my carbs all I do is crave it, and if I give in, I go crazy and overconsume. My carb demon is the lovely and too tasty for my own good, Mr White Potato. At least he's a veggie, right? >_>

Edit: Oh god, I've genderized my potato LOL.

I'm first generation American (both my parents are Italian and chefs!).  Carbs were my life for so long.

In general I allow myself to have most of my carbs in the morning (wheat toast, whole grain cereal, etc) but really restrict myself the rest of the day.  I still have the occasional bowl of pasta - or rice as a side dish, but it is a rarity and not my norm.

I find that the more I indulge in carbs, the more I want. I believe I have read a post here that says there is actually something addicting about them.

For me anyway, it's best to keep them out as much as possible, and it has made a huge difference - down 60 lbs!!

This might be some help with your carb challenges...I personally consume 300-350 grams of carbs DAILY.   CARBS

Relax... there's nothing wrong whatsoever with eating complex carbohydrates at every meal.  Just keep it to a modest portion and choose the wholegrain version.  Wholewheat pasta gives you a lot more fibre and, since it's made with the wholegrain rather than just the fine starch, you're also getting other nutrients besides.   The combination of the two means that a portion of wholewheat pasta, should be a little more filling for a little longer than one of white pasta.

To keep it your carbohydrate consumption reasonable here's some good rules of thumb

  • 2oz dry weight pasta, rice or noodles going into the pot is enough for one person.  A portion of bread, cereals, oats should also be limited to 2oz...
  • A medium-sized potato is one about the same dimensions as a computer mouse
  • Choose wholegrain or wholefood versions... wholemeal bread, wholewheat pasta, brown rice
  • Fill the rest of the plate with vegetables, make vegetable sauces, add side-salads and use meat/cheese/beans etc. as flavourings.

Oh, yes, I love carbs!  Especially when they are covered in sugar or cheese!

What I have tried to do is just limit my servings.  Instead of having a huge helping of noodles with my spaghetti, I try to make it smaller, but I don't completely cut them off, or I will definitely miss them and then I will binge.  I actually try to have some carbs with every meal - a little bit makes me feel fuller, and it doesn't ruin my calorie count if I keep the portions small.

Actually, I've found a balanced meal, with a little bit of dairy, protien, bread, and a lot of vegetables, can be low in calories and very filling and sustaining.  Just keep yourself to a budget.  I'm actually trying to follow the USDA Pyramid for my calorie level, and it seems to be working pretty well now that I'm learning how to budget it all, so that I don't eat all my bread allowance at breakfast.  I've had to rethink what constitutes a portion, and decide that I feel better, and fuller, with bran flakes, raisins and milk than with a couple of cinnamon rolls (although, the past few days, I have been splurging!)

And yes, the whole grain stuff is better for you.  It has fiber and some other important nutrients that the processing takes out of white flour.  And remember, you can subtract fiber from the total carbs, since it isn't processed by your body and flushes out.  Watch it, though, because a lot of the whole wheat stuff, especially bread, seems to have extra sugar in it.

you could try fiber gourmet pasta http://www.fibergourmet.com/Default.aspx  its more expensive that regular pasta, but well worth it for the fiber content, cals and the size of a serving is huge!

Also I boil cauliflower and make it like mashed potatoes or I shred it on a cheese grater, then steam it. Works rather well as a rice substitute

I am another carb addict. Pasta, rice, bread...anything!

What I have been doing is using half the amount of pasta/rice that I would normally cook, and adding loads of vegetables. I have discovered many interesting 'vegetable risotto' and 'pasta primavera' combinations. They are healthy, taste great, satisfy my carb craving, and do not use up my calorie quota.

I too LOVE carbs! Enjoyed the above mentioned article "Carbs". Here are some of my tips. I could eat a loaf of good French bread daily or a BIG serving of pasta (but I don't!)

Ezekiel Bread and Arnold Thins (like a hamburger bun) -more protein, whole grains...

Yukon Gold potatoes (don't need butter) mixed with yams (or sweet potatoe) and/or cauliflower--satisfying with a lower carbs.

Brown rice with wheat berries and quinoa--more protein and fiber.

Whole wheat or brown rice pasta-- and now I ACCURATELY measure out 4 servings, cook it and portion out 4 servings (husband and I for dinner, and husband and I for lunch the next day). I used to just dump in 6-8 servings and then store all of the leftovers together--I am sure I was eating way more than "1" serving!!

Good luck!

I love carbs too. I usually have some kind of bread/pasta or rice with my meals. I dont go crazy wtih my portions. I do find if I dont eat a carb with my meal I and really hungry within 1 hr of eating my meal.

instead of eating high carb why dont you supplement something else for example you could eat like lets say for breakfast some eggs with some hashbrowns? yum yum right.....or ditch the has browns and throw in some lean turkey bacon...

my point being supplement your carbs cravings for some healthy fats instead...like peanut butter. honestly in all studies healthy fats DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT ADD INCHES TO YOUR WAISTLINE. unfortunatly modern society/government has put out the EAT FAT AND GET FAT idea into everyones head...eat healthy fats and youll drop weight fine.

educate yourselfs in the way of nutrition, its a science treat it like one

however everyone likes carbs so when you do want carbs go for some sweet potato and some brown rice, maybe some quinoa or those thai noodles (forgot the name)

calories dont matter before you start counting every single calorie learn what calories are good and bad, cutting calories to drastically will severly sacrifice muscle tissue and when your done losing weight youll look like a deflated balloon, have fun with plastic surgery after that

hope this helps someone...good luck with your carb cravings!!! :)
