I'm eating too many calories and very little fat? Am I eating too much?

Quote  |  Reply

Every day when I count up my calories, I'm surprised at my analysis.  I just started on this site a little bit ago, trying to get down from 135 to 130, which I used to be.

Oh, I might as well give the basic info:
Height:  5'7"  (five foot seven)
Age:  14 (d.o.b. 31/08/94)
Gender:  Female
Clothing Size (Canadian sizes):  5-6  But my bum is too big, so I can be a size 2 shirt with a size 6 bottom    T_T
Current Weight:  135-136
Goal Weight:  First 130, then if I get down to that I'd like to make it down to 125.

I realize that 135 is the perfect weight for someone 5'7 (with that whole add 5 for every inch after 5f thing) but I dont feel thin, I'm not happy with my weight.  If you look at my gallery, you might see that I'm not exactly thin.  I think I might actually be an ectomorph- which is weird bc its supposed to be hard for us to gain weight.  But just the combination of the height, long limbs and fingers, small chest (Grr...), and that I fit the profile in general makes me think this.  Lisa Kudrow (Phoebe from friends) is apparently an ectomorph, and she's not Kate Moss thin, so I guess I could be one.

Anyways, my daily calorie goal is 1500 calories, but I eat WAYYYY over that.  Today I ate 2322cals.  I know... WOAH.  But the weird thing is, my fat intake is really low.  I ate 29g of fat today.
Here's all the analysis:
2,322cals  -  1,687g eaten  -  29g of fat  -  481 carbs  -  99g protein  -  B+ grade

I know that to lose weight you have to burn more calories than you eat, but what if you burn more fat than you eat?  I dont really understand this all.  Why are we counting calories, but not fat?

I'm not looking to bring up my fat intake, I'm looking for ways to bring down my calorie intake.  I think the problem is I eat a lot of low-fat snack/meals throughout the day instead of the basic 3 meals.
Today:
Breakfast:  Blueberry bagel (w/out anything on it), Silhouette 0+ berry yogurt
Lunch:  S'mores Luna Bar, Veggie sandwich, 1/2 a kinder egg
Snack:  Blueberry bagel (w/out anything on it), 3 cups of baby carrots, 2tbsp dressing (1.5g of fat)
Dinner:  Campbell's Chunky Beef Soup, whole wheat bagel (w/out anything on it), 1 cup (give or take) of rice.
Snack:  Nuts n' Cranberry Luna Bar

Is that too much?  I'm starting to wonder.  :S
I used to eat too little when I weighed 130lbs.
A normal day was like this:
Breakfast:  Nothing
Lunch:  Canned Pasta (Ravioli, spaghetti, etc) or a tuna sandwich
Snack:  2 mini donuts (4g of fat each)
Dinner:  Varies-- my dad cooked & there was no set schedule:  Usually some form of meat, rice, and a vegetable
Snack:  1 bowl of Kellogs Special K cereal without milk and a bottle of aquafina

So, I'm just looking for opinions on all of this, advice.  Should I be eating less?  Am I eating WAY too much?  Was what I used to eat normal?  Anything on the whole calories/fat intake thing?  How do I bring down my cals?

Thankyou,
x Caroline

PS-- here's a picture that shows just how unfortunately rectangular I am because my gallery uploader isnt working:  http://i38.tinypic.com/2w2lz0z.jpg
& here's one that shows how disproportionately large my bum is compared to my torso:  http://i34.tinypic.com/9jhqxe.jpg

I can't really give you any advice on your diet, I'm not good with that stuff. Someone will come along and do so more properly anyways...

I just wanted to say, you have a really cute figure! You're worrying too much. You're not "rectangular" at all...and you look thin to me. Not overly/sickly thin, but thin non-the-less.

hey there,

i would say if you're goal is 1,500 calories and you're eating over 2,000 than it's "too much." But teenagers are supposed to eat more because they are growing. I would try eating about 1,700 or 1,800 calories and get at least 30 minutes of exercise most days a week. You should see the scale start to budge soon. But please be careful, don't over do it. And don't worry about your weight excessively. You're young, enjoy it. :]

I agree that a teenager should be eating no less than about 1800 cals but i have to say looking at your pics you look gorgeous and very slim. I am the same height and weight as you and i wish i looked like that lol.

I dont feel thin, I'm not happy with my weight.

What you're describing is a lack of self-confidence rather than your size.  If you don't feel good about yourself at 135lbs you won't feel any happier at 125lbs.    Work on ways to boost your confidence that don't involve trying to eat less than you need.   This link takes you to a BMI calculator for teens... http://www.kidsnutrition.org/bodycomp/bmiz2.h tml   Entering your data you're the perfectly healthy weight for your height and you need 2280 cals a day if you are active for up to 1 hour a day.  So in every respect you're completely normal and don't need to cut calories or lose weight.

Everyone has different body-shapes...  We're people, that's what makes us interesting.  The smart thing to do is to work out what your best features are and make the most of them with good grooming and clever dressing.   I know so many men that drool over J-Lo because of her generous rear-end!!!  The not-so-smart thing to do would be to let any minor flaws interfere with you enjoying yourself and leading a normal life.

Your not eating a whole lot of fruits and vegetable try substituting those blueberry bagels for a cup of strawberries or a banana. : )

Eating fat doesn't necessarily translate to gaining fat, eating a lot of fats can make you gain but eating good fats (nuts, avocados, fish, etc) can help you lose fat and many other foods can make you gain fat, especially sugar.

Your diet seems to be pretty balanced, but if you're worried about fat gain, you may want to switch out some high sugar, simple carbs for naturally sweetened foods and complex carbs, like more fruit and veggies, wheat bread and brown rice.  But I wouldn't worried too much about fats, as long as your calories are right (and they seem fine for someone of your age) and you're not eating too much saturated fat, you should be just fine with the amount you're eating.

Just want to say that you are VERY HOT. The foods you listed on your diet seem healthy enough for most people. Know that most bagels and breads are a relatively simple carb unless you get the kind made of whole or preferably sprouted grains. Watch for additives like corn syrup found in most breads, snack bars, and yogurts. Corn syrup can make you feel hungrier. If you find natural whole grain breads and cereals without this sweetener you will fill more satisfied. You might try balancing your diet with a little more raw fruits and coooked or raw green veggies or carrots during the day. Try wide variety of real foods( as in the produce section) eat what taste good to you. You wont get fat and you will have more energy than you can handle.

Thank you so much to everyone that answered.  You all really helped me.

jblarghp - Thankyou for what you said!  You totally made my day.  And you're really gorgeous, yourself!  You remind me of what Bella Swan should look like.  Thats a good thing.  :)

awiita - Thankyou!  I've gotten my calories lower, to about 1800.  And I've been swimming for phys. ed. about an hour every other day.  Soon we start weight room.  Thanks for the advice!

sarahc1984 - I didnt realize teenagers should be eating more.  I'm getting about 1800 calories now.  And thank you for what you said!!  You're super gorgeous!  You have really pretty eyes and great cheekbones.  :)

gi-jane - You're probably right.  I've always been a little self concious about my weight.  Thank you for making me see that I'm normal.  I liked what you said about J-Lo.  She's gorgeous.  Thank you so much for bringing up my confidence.

allisondunstan - Thanks Allison!  I'm starting to do sit ups during commercials. :)

sublimelife087 - Haha. My obsession with bread is what makes me eat so many bagels.  I've been eating carrots instead lately though, so thanks!  :)

thermal - I didnt know about the good-fats thing.  Thank you!

proteinglutton -  Haha!  Thank you!!  I'm trying to lay off the bagels a little, or just eat whole wheat ones, because I eat too many carbs.  I could live off of bread, its my guilty pleasure.  ;)   I've been eating carrots more often, I'll try other veggies too.  Thank you for the advice!!

THANKYOU everyone!  You were all immensely helpful, and I'm so grateful for your answers.  I'm going to go snack on some carrots.  ;)
