I'm GAINING!!!

Quote  |  Reply

I upp'd my fitness to 2x a day this week and I'm back to 140... up 3 pounds!

Before this week I would only work out 2-3x a week and I barely starting getting back on track less than a month ago. And I just recently joined this site two days ago and became aware of the Eat/Burn calculations. Before this site I was consuming 1200 to 1300 calories and burning anywhere from 2400 to 2800.  Could this be the reason for the weight gain? Or could it just be water weight?!?

Stats: Female, 137 140, 5'7", 30 (technically 31 on Sunday, but I can only deal with one crisis at a time... :) and I put my activity level at the lowest level.  I'm supposed to eat 1223 calories and my burn meter reads 1943.

Ugh... This is so discouraging...

It sounds like you are a little low on calories, especially if you're working out hard.  Burning 2800 and eating 1200 is hard on your body.

BUT, I wouldn't be worried about 3lbs, until you see consistant gains over a few weeks, I wouldn't be worried at all.

If you are working out twice a day, you certainly are not at the lowest activity level. If you set your level to account for your activity, you'll find that you are "supposed" to eat a lot more than 1200.

Thanks thermal... I'm going to up my calories now and see where I'm at at the end of week 2.

Good call, if you are going to put yourself at sedentary, I would log all the expected activity for the day, then subtract 500-1000 calories to ballpark where you should be eating-wise, then you can delete it and log your real exercise as you go.  1200-1300 is what you should eat on a totally sedentary day.

Good luck!

i would give it more than a week...but that's just me.

Is it possible that your weight gain could be coming from an increase in muscle mass?

It would be a good thing to pick up weight from muscles mass because having more muscle will cause you to burn more fat.

I would focus more on you waist size in the beginning.

Not even steroidites gain 3 pounds of muscle mass a week.  However, the original poster is overreacting to what sounds like a simple water weight gain and should chill for a bit -- if you haven't lost that weight again in a week or two, you have a problem, but for now, you can wait a bit.  Weigh fluctuates, this is a fact.

I absolutely agree with horfinator that your weight will fluctuate. I've had days where I put on 2 lbs after eating healthy and watching my calorie intake and getting plenty of exercise. After a couple days I normally lose that 2 lbs. and more. Look at the overall picture and you'll notice your weight loss trend going down with some days of increases on your chart.

you work out 2 times per day? every day? give yourself a couple days off! :)

at 140 and 5'7", you're probably pretty close to your goal weight, unless you have a small frame.

1200 cals is not enough on workout days.. your deficiet should only be 1000 calories each day.. more than that and your body will be unhappy.

OMG girl you are going to kill yourself if you eat less then you burn.  Your body NEEDS calories to function.

Go to a doctor and have him or her outline a diet for you.  Eating so little will result in:

- scalp hair loss

- kidney problems

- heart problems

- bone and tooth decay

- constipation (as your body starts to process food slower to get every last bit of nutrients out)
