I'm a Gassy Lassy

Quote  |  Reply

So I've been having trouble with excess gas lately.  It's not stinky, but I have a lot of it and it's making my abdomen a little bloated.  It's also really uncomfortable.  I think it's a wicked combo of TOTM and eating lots of fiber and veggies.

What are some good ways to alleviate gas?  My sister has taken Bean-o before but she hated it.  Is there anything else that people can recommend?

Bananas are a natural antacid. Peppermint and fennel, in natural or tea form, are also brilliant for relieving gas and an upset tummy. You may also want to reduce your fibre a little while it calms down - particular fiends when it comes to gas are legumes and vegetables of the Brassicaceae family. Broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus, cabbage, to name a few. I'd start with a nice cup of peppermint tea and go from there. Hope this helps. :D

Like lalabanana, I often have a cup of peppermint tea after a large meal (make sure you get one that is all peppermint leaves, some have some weird additives).  Going for a leisurely after-dinner walk also helps me get things moving and the gas gone quicker.

And, ah, I've also noticed that when I lay off the aspartame containing foods (not sure if this is a factor for you), my gassiness goes way down.  No idea why that is, but hey, that's what happens to me (and a coworker).

I think you might be having trouble with your nose.  It sure stinks over here!

(Sorry- couldn't resist.)

I have exactly the same problem after lunch.  Supper bloated from gas.  This has always been a problem for me when I am dieting.  I will try the peppermint tea and see if that helps.

Do they make caffeine free peppermint tea?  I have troubles with the caffeine...

Also, my husband has no sense of smell.  How lucky am I?  Tongue out

Thanks for the tips!

o_o Peppermint tea should be naturally caffeine free! If you're finding it with caffeine I'd wonder where you were looking, haha.

That's what I meant about the additives...up here (Canada) at least you can get varieties based on black tea that are "peppermint infused" or something like that.  Stay away from that stuff for sure.

I also have problems with caffeine and sleep, and peppermint tea (peppermint leaves only) before bed actually helps me sleep.

:-(  The peppermint tea did not help.   It made it worst for me.  Has anyone tried the digestive enzymes??   I wonder if that would work?

Epset: Prebiotics do not generally help gas as far as I know. That said, if you're going to look into prebiotics take it in a tablet form, such as one alongside a multivitamin - eating them or drinking them through specially formulated yoghurts and drinks usually results in your stomach acid killing the good bacteria. You're better off taking a tablet form.

I take Swiss Herbal Digestive Aid with stuff to help digest Milk, protein and carbs.  I think the problem might be milk!!   So far so good.   I am going to add a pre-biotic in powder form.  See if that helps.
