I'm too heavy for push ups. Help!
Asked by crystal_cherry on Jul 10, 2009 in Fitness

I'm 28 and a mother of 18 months old. I started exercising 3 months back.  I do a workout CD by Kathy Kealer that includes calisthenics and some cardio/aerobics.  In the workout, they do push ups for arms and chest, but I'm too heavy for my arms, so I
still can't do more than 5 or 6 which is affecting me in the sense that I'm losing inches all over but not that much on arms and chest.  I just want to ask if there are some other easier exercises for chest area.

Answer

If your arms buckle under the weight of your body, switch to wall push ups.  By standing and leaning, your body will be supported while you get an upper body workout.  To do a wall push up, lean against the wall with yourfeet together and hands shoulder width apart while keeping your body straight, and then lower until your nose touches the wall and push back to the starting position.  Slight variations are also possible as shown in this youtube demonstration of wall push ups.  Once you lose some weight and gain more strength, you can return to floor push ups.
