I'm interested in hearing other's strange food oddities and food rituals :-)
So we all have strange food habits and enjoy odd combinations of food. Feel free to share your food and eating oddities that are just normal habits in your life!
Let's see I like to refer to the term "food baby" when I've over eaten and am bloated and very full lol. I read the term used in OK Magazine once and died laughing and now I'm in love with the phrase! Also I love to put diet swiss miss on top of my oatmeal lol and also for a snack I like to put sugar free strawberry jam on top of a wedge of light l.c cheese and dip pretzels in it. Also I make egg salad sandwiches but uses steamed tofu instead of eggs or sometimes I'll used hard boiled egg whites but the tofu is more fun and odd :-). Also I put Frank's red hot on almost everything I consume from scrambled egg whites to taking reduced fat townhouse crackers and spreading light l.c cheese on it and then top it with hot sauce. Good snack I'm telling ya!!! I'm interested to hear others oddities that actually would turn out not so odd :-)
Reason: Set as Food Forum Sticky
I think my food combinations aren't so odd, but I do have a couple of eating quirks, leftover from the "bad" old days before I started changing my eating habits. First, I always save the best for last when I eat. For example, at supper, if I have three types of food on my plate, whichever one of them is the one I like best, that is the one I eat last. I want the best taste to stay in my mouth as long as possible.
My husband eats completely differently - he eats from left to right. Like reading a book or something. Whatever is on the left side of his plate gets eaten first and then he makes his way to whatever's on the right side. I think that is seriously weird.
Can you tell I think about eating a lot?
Also, my favorite food is asparagus. I think maybe I'm the only one I know who's favorite isn't chocolate or sweets, but is a vegetable. I've loved asparagus above all else since I was a girl. Right now, I'm just waiting for the season to start.
At wendy's I dip my fries in my frosty....
I like my cereal to soak up the milk a bit before eating it..its better mushier..and the milk taste better
9 times out of ten I slice up a banana and eat it rather than eat it as a whole (have no idea why)..and I like to sprinkle it with cinnamon
Everything is better with mustard on it. I sometimes skip the mayo in my tuna salad and just stick with mustard.
Theres probably more but I can't think of them.
I have to eat all my vegtables and then my carbs and then my meat. I always do it and did not know until I was married for over a year and my hubby said you ALWAYS eat the same way.
I have to pour my milk on at the very last minute runningbuns. I have to have it absorb as little as possible.
in my bad days I would take a sppon of PB and dip it into chocolate chips and then put that on slices of bananas. yum but badddddd
Hm m I duno how weird it may be but I tend to always have the same things for breakfast..oatmeal, a grapefruit and egg whites..I dont know what it is but no matter how hungry I am or not I always have it...I guess I just enjoy a hearty start to the day.
If I open something or If I have something left over I usually always have to finish it or it will bug me! Like If I make a acorn squash and am not super hungry for it..If i start to nibble at it then I feel like I have to just eat it all or its a waste! haha I dont know why...and If I have like just a tiny bit of something left over I just finsih it all...anyone else do that? hmm duno wat else
Whenever I am slicing potatoes, say to make mashed potatoes, I must eat a few slices raw. My husband thinks I'm crazy and always tells me that I'm going to get worms. I've tried looking up raw potatoes to include in my calorie count for the day but unfortunately this site doesn't have a listing!
- I'm thinking I'm going to be the weirdest one here...
I haven't done this since I was younger, but I'm sure I'd probably still do it if the occasion came up. I used to be a very picky eater, so when we would go to other relatives' houses, there would be nothing for me to eat except...a sandwich consisting of a hotdog or hamburger bun or slices of bread, and ketchup or mustard...with pickles. I also went through a phase where I liked to dip croutons in ketchup...
Ok, the gross parts over now.
As far as rituals go:
I tear apart my sanwiches and subs, eating parts of it seperate.
I won't eat my whole meal at one time. I'll cook the meat, eat it, then cook the veggies, eat them, then go for some grains, and eat that, etc. Maybe because I don't like it when one part of my meal gets cold while I'm eating the another?
I also hate it when my foods get mixed in each other if there is a time that it's served all at once. Crap, there's mashed potatoes in my broccoli!
So I told my husband about this and he reminded me of one. Anytime I have a candy with a fiiling say reeses or a chocolate covered cheery or anything I have to pull off all the chocolate and eat it and then eat whatever is on the inside. I even do it with carmel I need a spoon for that one though. I also have to pull the skin off of slim jims. hmmm....

I pull the chocolate off my Luna bars and it that first. Lol.
LOL runnngbuns-- I do the french fries and Frosty thing too (chocoate of course). In fact, any kind of french fry/chocolate shake combo works for me. The shake is always the ketchup!
I also cannot stand for my food to touch each other. If I'm having a meat, a veg and a starch, everything is separated in their own section. My BF jokes with me all the time about this.
I started Dr. Gott's "no flour, no sugar" plan two weeks ago. Since ice cream is my favorite food and I am not ready to give it up, I decided to buy "no sugar added" ice cream. Wal-mart sells their own brand (Great Value) fat-free, sugar-free ice cream. It has 70 calories per 1/2 cup and contains 4-5 grams fiber (depending on vanilla or strawberry), mainly because maltodextrin is added to it. It tastes WAY better than I expected it to taste. Still eating too much of it . . .
if you want to read more about these you should look on the recovering eating disorder sites. I have so many strange food rituals, but i think there are rituals like same time, same place, eating left to right....I cannot eat a sandwich i pick everything of in layers and i really prefer to have every different thing in my food in a separate piles on my plate and so many more. fried rice or mixed veggies freak me out. than there are just strange things we like to eat. i like to dip carrots in chocolate yogurt. some strange rituals are the sign of disordered eating and some are just fun and quirky. so many of these thing, ketchup sandwich, picking chocolate off first, fries in a frosty all seem pretty normal to me. i do all those. actually i did ketchup in ketcup. everything goes better with ketchup. its the one food i could never go with ut...i know its not even real food.
bowman06: I also eat the outsides of things first! My fiance always makes fun of me when I eat the skin off of slim jims first lol
Nevermind... I double posted.

I can so relate!! I think mine is some kind of mild form of OCD. It's not just when I eat, I ALWAYS save the best everything for last. My boyfriend always eats his favorite things first (weird...) It sucks for me because he always ends up eating half of my meal, so yeah, the part he ends up eating is always the good stuff, while I'm stuffed off the not-as-good stuff. You'd think I would change the habit...
I love love love yogurt and I can put it on anything and think its the most amazing thing ever.
LAst weekend I had cooked spinach, ground turkey, EVOO, lemon juice, and a tiny bit of basmati rice and then loaded 1.5 cup of fat free yogurt on it. OMG greatest meal ever.
Last night I had steamed brocc, cauliflower, and carrots covered in greek yogurt.
I love falafel with greek yogurt on it.
Ummmm I love eating fish for breakfast. I think most ppl think thats weird. Sushi this morning, salmon the other morning.
I used to love eating hot dog buns with just cheeze whiz in them, no meat.
Umm, I love yogurt soup too. Ha ha, so much yogurt. I also love love love this yogurt drink I make with chopped (super small) cucumber, garlic, salt, yogurt, and water. Can you tell my family is from the mediterranean? yumm I love yogurt!
I think those are all my weird eating habits!
I break up or tear most foods - like sandwiches, bars, muffins, bagels, etc. I'm working on learning just to take bites. At this point though, I feel like as long as I'm eating everything, its okay.
I eat my oats in "halves" - I eat on side of the bowl and then start again from the top on the other half. But I always eat the topping part first.
I tend to eat one piece at a time (one almond, one piece of broccoli, etc) And I apparently tend to take small fork/spoonfuls.
I "divide" food into groups so I get a pattern when I'm eating. For instance: 1/4 sandwich. 1/4 of vegetables. 1/4 fruit. Repeat.
I have an incessant need to "check" foods before I eat them. IE I look through boxes of raisins to make sure there aren't any funny ones (Whenever I haven't checked, its always the time there is a grotesque black blob of goo in the box.)
I mix granola or muesli with applesauce and cottage cheese.
I put flaked coconut or chocolate chips into yogurt. Along with raisins, ground nuts, flax, or honey.
I like shredded wheat mashed into plain yogurt witha bit of honey or fruit. Seriously - its like cheesecake.
I like hummus and apple sandwiches. Or avocado and apple too.
I mix canned tuna with hummus, avocado, cottage or ricotta cheese but NEVER mayonnaise.
I hate when foods touch or mi into each other if I don't plan them to be together (i.e. pasta cannot touche veggies or protein-source, but granola mixed with yogurt is ok)
That's all I can think of at the moment.
- I can't just EAT a sandwich/wrap/bars/ect. with my hands I have to tear it and eat it piece by piece..
- I can't eat a handful of foods..I have to eat it one by one.
- My dad likes putting peanut butter & j on an everything bagel. o_O
- I like dejion spicy mustard on bread --- nothing else.
- I like eating pasta plain.
- I like putting chili powder or cinnamon on my popcorn.
- Shredded coconut in my oatmeal, smoothie, or yogurt.
- Potatoes + BBQ sauce or Mustard = <3
- Soy ice cream in my hot chocolate.
- When I was little I used to eat onions raw...yum. ;DD
Hmmm..maybe there's more.
I have to cook food to the point where it's so hot I can't eat it, then I blow on it until it cools off. Otherwise I don't feel like it's cooked long enough. I can't stand lukewarm food. I get afraid of food poisoning even though I've never had it.
When I used to eat fries (I really try not to now, unless it's a quality check while I'm working the fryers at work =D) I would shove as many as possible in my mouth at a time - 7? 10? I do the same thing with popcorn. Huge bites. It's more fun, more crunchy. Mmm.
I never chew with my mouth open, because it reminds me of cows chewing cud, so it's really fun to do the above and have my mouth shut the whole time I'm chewing. Hahaha.
I stir my food a lot as I eat it, especially soups and chili.
All my cereal has to have touched the milk. So I pour in cereal, then milk, then poke the cereal down in the milk with my spoon a bunch before I eat it.
Sometimes I turn the fork upside down - usually if I have to stab the food to pick it up and can't scoop it with the fork, like green beans or corn. I'll flip the fork over and pull it off with my teeth that way.
I usually don't drink a drink with my meal. If I'm at a restaurant where drinks are served first, I drink the entire drink before the food gets there. Then they have to refill it, and I don't drink the refill until I'm done with the meal. If I have food and drink at the same time, my drink usually hangs out until the food is gone and then I drink it.
If I pour something not liquidy into a bowl to eat - like peanuts I guess - they have to be level. I shake the bowl around until they level out. When I was really little and my hands were smaller I would pat the food down into the bowl.
If my food is warm and it has cheese involved, the cheese must be melted. I can't stand cold cheese on warm food. I think that's why tacos bothered me as a child - cold shredded cheese. Eww. Or when I'd get the side of nachos at Taco Bell, I made them warm up the nacho cheese if it wasn't. My Subway sandwiches are always toasted because sometimes I can't stand cold cheese on cold food either. ;)
Salads must be soaked with some sort of dressing - that's why I had to find a really low-calorie, low-fat dressing to use.
When I get food at the cafeteria here, the forks are right by the door. The idea is to get your tray (which I never use) and fork first, then go get food, put it on the tray, etc. Nope. I just walk right in, get my food, pay for it, then walk back in and get a fork. Kind of weird.
Wow, I'm just noticing how weird all this sounds when I write it out.
When I orde penne pasta in a restaurant I eat the white pieces around the edges first, then eat the pieces with the sauce.
I don't like meat with cheese unless it's in a casserole. NO cheese with a cold meat sandwich.
I don't like fried or greasy foods.
I don't like foods with a lot of sodium.
I wash the heck out of my fruits and veggies. Pesticide and germ concerns.
I like most kinds of beans except black beans and pinto beans.
I will not eat lunch meat that has marbles of fat in it.
I love All Bran. I can eat it with Almond Breeze and no sweetner.
I like cauliflower and light sour cream mixed in my mashed potato.
I do not like my salad in a salad bowl. I want it on my plate right next to the starch item and I have to have my salad room temperature not cold.
I use like 3 lemon wedges in my iced tea. Maybe it's lemon tea lol.
I like cottage cheese on bagels. I like mashed potatoes cooked in scrambled eggs.
I have to smell my food before I eat it. When something is really tasty I make moaning noises. Can be quite irritating i'm sure lol.
I cannot eat an apple that has a hole in it. I bit into one one time and it had a worm. Yes I ate half the worm lol. Same with razzleberry pie for Marie Calendars or any berry pie I have problems eating because once there was maggots in my pie.
A lot of times when I wash chicken or shrimp if I see a vein I will not be able to eat it later even when it's cooked.
I like sweet potatoes with salsa on it.
I mix 1 C kashi go lean or heart to heart with 1/2 C all bran for breaky.
I will not eat the peach fuzz. Pineapples scare me.
Sometimes when food makes squeeky noises on your teeth like an apple I cannot eat it. It reminds me of someone running their fingers down a chalk board.
I once made a tofu mousse that was terrific. But for the most part tofu is like a wet sponge and gross.
I like my oatmeal, peanut butter, banana shake with splenda or honey. Mmmm Blend all together or with all bran.
The smell of popcorn sometimes gives me a headache. The smell of eggs gross me out during TTOM. Broccoli sometimes makes me nausiated but not bloated.
EDIT TO ADD: I love salted peanuts mixed with candy corn. I also use to take ruffle potatoe chips and crunch them up in vanilla icecream. I dont do either anymore.
