OK, so I'm kind of nerdy...

So I entered my weight log into Excel (dates in column A, weight in column B) so that I could do a regression line. (you can adapt the instructions from http://www.ncsu.edu/labwrite/res/gt/gt-reg-ho me.html)

I was pleased to see my little graph and get a trendline - and especially the equation of the line, showing that on average I am losing 0.3095 pounds a day! (The slope, i.e. the coefficient of the X, is this measure). I took out the first few data points because I had that initial fast "dip" on my first week and a half, which would skew the results.  Best of all, my regression score (Rsquared) was over 0.92! (the closer to 1, the better the "fit" meaning the slope is more meaningful).

I did this because I hit a little plateau and was feeling a bit hopeless, bored, and wanting to eat junk food. However, it was great for boosting morale and reminding myself that even if the number isn't moving right now, I'm still losing about 2 pounds a week - and that's AFTER my initial, steeper drop! (My body's pattern, seemingly, is to hold steady for 4-5 days or so and then drop a pound a day for two days, then steady out, and so on...)

So if anyone else is nerdy, try this, it's fun.  :)

yeah, trustwomen, i'm nerdy too.  i don't do the date/weight excel sheet...but i do have the one with calories consumed, calories burned, projected loss, real loss...and another that averages my weekly calorie, fat, protein, fiber, sodium carb, etc. consumption.

omg am I a nerd??? lol  I also use an excel spreadsheet to chart my weight loss. I have a formula which takes the number of calories from foods I eat, and calculate a "daily total". Then, that total get calculated into a "weekly total", and a "deficit total".  My weight loss column is next to my morning weigh-in box. I track my weight daily, but I only log my Friday morning weight into the CC log. I haven't started excercise yet! But I love the idea of  a calorie expenditure column...hmmmm.
nerds!!  what the hell  LOL

naw, im not into graphs on weight loss.  I did a excel spreadsheet of my zigzag diet with forumlas to calculate it all for me.  Yes, im a lazy nerd.  And its all colorful.... hahaha ill link it up when ppl want to try it or need it.
woo woo!

ps. LOL i did that too assl, did a micro nutrience breakdown of p/f/c for the 8 meals and calories.  aint that sometin!
Heh... nerds. (Says the mathematics major)

Okay, I admit it, I do the same thing.
??white n nerdy, cuz im just too white n nerdy??

:D maybe ur not white but that's the 1st thing i thought of :D
i'm a nerd, but not the spreadsheet kind.

actually, i'm more of a dork.
You ran a regression on your weight chart! That's not nerdy, that's profoundly cool.

You must have a pretty consistent weight loss to have an r-square like that. What's the time frame you are using?

Thanks for the link too- I was just looking for tips on graphing in Excel.
Someone called me "profoundly cool"! (blush, grin) For someone who is not only nerdy but also dorky (or geeky? not sure of the terminology but I fit all of them), such a compliment does not come often. :)    (It was the best link I could find in my 60-sec. google search: the only one with screenshots - which, to uber-visual me, is invaluable.)

I used the time frame from June 5th till today. I changed my eating habits on May 25th, but lost 9 lbs in the first 10 days (!) so I didn't count the data points till June 5th. I know, it isn't very long. I feel like I just started this journey...

I don't log every day, I just log when I go down. Actually I just updated it after starting this thread (I'm down one more as of this afternoon - yay!) and my r-square is now 0.93-something.  (I know, ridiculously steady, right?!  Yet with my weird pattern it doesn't feel like that until I look at the regression.) This makes me feel more confident about my calorie deficit, I guess it really is about -1000.

And yes, I am in fact both white and nerdy. (I LOVE that Weird Al song.  I have edited Wikipedia, though I would never buy a Segway...)  ;)
Statistical analysis works on a modeling system- you keep fiddling with the stats until the model you've created says what you want, and then you're done!

You've got a great model- as long as you don't record any "up" weights, your r-square will continue to rock! :)

Don't let anyone fool you- confidently analytical (aka science-nerdy) is the coolest thing on the planet. I mean, except the very stylish   cigarette holders   slicked back hair and leather jackets   being naked and covered in mud   platform shoes   polo shirts with turned-up collars   eyebrow piercings   sideways baseball hats.
I'm lucky inasmuch as I don't really get "up-weights". The one exception was when I came home from a weekend "off" and saw 9 pounds extra... but 36 hours later it was gone and I was back to preweekend baseline, so I didn't count that as a "real" increase - it was clearly water retention and food volume. I get fluctuations depending on time of day, sure, but since I consider my day's weight to be "the lowest one I can coax out of the scale that day" (helps me mentally), it really does just go steady, steady, steady, drop, drop, steady etc..

I didn't fiddle with the stats! At least I don't consider it that. I really did just enter my log data except for the first 10 days. I don't think my data collection is that skewed... :(

p.s. I'm a fan of the leather, mud and platform shoes. Can do without the cigarettes, polo shirts and baseball hats.  (Sadly, SF TV shows and D&D never make any list of coolness, so I am still doomed... )   ;)
I admit it, I have an excel sheet too! Mine calculates my daily and overall average deficit and projects my expected weight loss. It also calculates average time spent exercising per day, days exercised vs. not, and from that the % of days I exercised and the days per week that I exercise on average (6.1!). I used to graph my weight but I stopped logging them except once a week. I don't have that many data points yet, but I am sure I will feel the need to geek when I have "more data!" GEEKGEEKGEEK!!!
i've always wondered...what's the distinction between a nerd, a geek, and a dork.  i'm guessing the geek has something to do with being more tech-savvy, but other than that...anyone?
Take the test!!   http://www.okcupid.com/tests/take?testid=9935 030990046738815

According to this test:

A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia.
A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one.
A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions.

(My results: 60% nerd, 39% geek, 52% dork, aka "Tri-Lamb Material!". I think I'm not that much of a dork but hey - they asked about fashion sense for heaven's sake)

43 % Nerd, 13% Geek, 8% Dork
i can live with that...

I'm so envious Aasil! You're hardly a dork at all! (Really, though, when people meet me I seem perfectly normal, I hide it well.)
ah, i was a jock in high school and an artist in college...and i'm a beer drinker...you loose some dorkiness through all those activities!  it's been a process.
Oh dear lord.  I am 78% nerd, 47% geek and 43% dork!  There is NO HOPE for me!  And I'm in the 99th percentile of my age and gender for ALL THREE.  Ahhhhh!
I don't know what percentage I am but I am definitely on the nerdy side but I hide it well.  ;-)

I don't chart my weight loss in Excel but I do my measurements.  I have a column for each part of the body with a baseline measurement at the top and everytime I measure I put it below it and I sum those to get total inches lost per body part then an overall total of how many inches I've lost.  So far I have lost 20.25 inches over the last 4 months :-)
Wow, jenka, there were percentiles on that site? I didn't even see those. I guess that's where that extra 18% comes in...

[trustwomen is now bowing, in sincere respect, to the alpha-nerd]

:)

-at least I'm still the uber-dork... oh, wait, that's the only one that's NOT a good thing...
I just wanted you to know that I laughed my butt off reading that post. That's something I started doing a few days ago. No trends yet as I've only been on the diet for 4 weeks, but eventually.

I love anything that's super geeky. I was a chem and bio major in college. I loved anything that had anything to do with science or math. I still do.

God, I miss school.
