I'm in a 5km Race Tonight And I Just Don't Wanna.
I can run 5k - I've already been in a 5k and a 10k race already this summer. And I fairly regularly do 5k as part of my exercise regime.
But... This week I'm in a funk. My prep 5k on Monday went horrible and it ruined my spirits (I might blame allergies or lazy or dehydration or not enough food fuel... but overall it was just my worst feeling run ever). I had to walk twice which just doesn't usually happen to me - especially in 5k! And I was actually sore the next day which means somewhere I fell out of the shape I thought I was in.
It's rainy outside today which isn't helping my spirits and downtown is going to be wet and smelly and gross and the race is at 8pm when I thought it was at 6pm and I'm just not feeling it. I don't want to warm up and dance with crowds for hours (the group I'm running with is taking a bus down to be there by 5:30 or so!)
And I'm all bummed cuz I'm thinking my training wasn't quite good enough or dedicated enough and I won't get close to my goal time of 28minutes.
Tell me to smarten up please and kick this 5k's butt. Thanks.
You have quite a lot of complaints, my friend. I lost the use of my right ankle last year and had an artificial ankle implanted over a year ago. I will never run again. I work out, but no more runners high, mountain trails or surf runs. I simply walk and will limp for life. Im not bitchen, its better than a peg leg, pirates patch on my eye and a parrot on my shoulder, but to be able to run a 5 k race Ouch that would be good.
I hope you don't take offense to my note, but you are one lucky sob to be able to run. Enjoy your gifts, rain never melted a runner. I use to love to run in the rain, the world thought I was crazy, but if the body didn't cool down, the rain never harmed me. I never got sick.
I hope you go for that run! Have a great day.
M
I think you should run the race! Anything could have made your run unenjoyable on Monday, and it doesn't mean it will happen again today. Had you been overtraining? As long as you took it easy the past 2 days, your legs should be fresh.
If I were you I'd go to the race on my own rather than have to sit around for 2 hours at the site before it starts.. maybe that would make this whole experience less daunting.
Visualize yourself having a great run and floating through the race, getting a personal record. Definitely go and have fun!!!!
I guess I wasn't clear on the fact that I was never not going. I signed up and so I'd do it regardless - but I just wasn't feeling up to it.
So I ran the race and also sat around for the two hours prior... as predicted the race was harder than I felt it should've been. I was quite wheezy and such. But I made a gun time of 30:03 but was so far back from the start line I'm hoping my chip time was close to beating the 28min mark. But I'm happy with under 30. Especially since my motivation was sub-zero.
As for the rain - I didn't melt of course - wasn't really worried about me - but the rainy day made the sewer combo sanitary systems reek more like a porta-potty than usual for most of the race which was as lovely as I predicted.
So I had a complainy day. THanks for trying to push me out of it. Sometimes I've just got to vent it out and complain though when I'm just not feeling it. Which is exactly what today is (or maybe this week?).
and iron-mike - I do have at least the parrot on my shoulder! (really - I've got a parrot) but in all seriousness I'm glad you do take the effort to take part in everything you can do.
Cheers to doing the things you can do even when you don't want to. Sub 30min is mine!
