I'm looking for a yogurt *in Canada* that's still sweetened with aspartame.

Okay, I'm looking for an artificially sweetened yogurt that does not contain sucralose/Splenda. The following are not options:

Danone - contains sucralose
Yoplait Source - contains sucralose
President's Choice - sucralose
Astro - recently switched over to sucralose

Do aspartame-sweetened yogurts still exist??

(And in the States I know it's different, so I'm only looking for replies from Canadian residents).

why aspartame, but not sucralose?

Go to a health food store and see what they offer.  You could always buy a 'plain' yogourt and add your own sweetner, if your search finds you nothing.

EW. Why? Artificial sweeteners make you fat.  Plain yogurt with fruit and no sweetener is way better, but if you need sweetener, you're better off with sugar.

I lost 100 lbs since cutting asparcrap out of my diet.

Satyrswoman, because sucralose leaves me unable to walk without limping for about two weeks, and keeps me up at night grabbing the back of my neck. I worry more about the short term effects. As long as I don't get sick tomorrow, I don't care what I die from in however many years. Others might see it a different way, but there are many "artificial sweeteners: good or bad?" debate topics for that.

Oneis2many, I've never actually been in a health food store before (aside from the health section in my grocery store). I think I'll try it if there's nothing closer. And I've never seen aspartame in liquid or flavored form... I have some Stevia... it's better than nothing, but if I find it tastes bitter in oatmeal, I'm sure it'll do the same in yogurt :/

Udokier, aspartame does not make you fat. That wasn't my question, and I am certainly not looking to start a debate or get advice from anyone. My question  was simply "what brand in Canada still sweetens their yogurt with aspartame?"

I don't think any yogurts use aspartame anymore. Activia doesn't use sucralose in most (if not all) of their yogurts, just sugar. Plain yogurt is the way to go though. If you must, you could add whatever sweetener you wanted.

I won't belabor the point.  But I do continue to be mystified at how many people sweeten things that totally don't need sweetening - like yogurt, iced tea and breakfast cereals.  Knock yourself out finding nutrasweet yogurt.  I really have no idea

I do know that here in Japan, I face the opposite dilemma.  I eat plain yogurt, but the kids like the fruity flavored ones, but every time I look at the ingredients, they almost always have some nasty artificial sweetener or other in them, even though they are not even labeled as "diet"!  They put sucraplose and asparcrap in everything here lately, "diet" or not.  So I kind of share your frustration, in a way, I guess...

I totally agree with udokier 100% but this line reminded me that Lucerne brand diet yogurt used to be sweetened with Nutrasweet so you could try checking it out.

wow that really sucks. i'm pretty much with you on the what kills me down the road bit, but have no issues with sucralose, while i really dislike the aftertaste of aspartame. good luck!

I don't think there are ANY yoghurts that are sweetened solely with aspartame any more because sucralose has less of an artificial taste so they think it's better... the general idea now seems to be to use a little of all the different sweeteners they can so that none of them dominate the flavour. Which of course sucks if you're allergic to one of them!

If you want lightly sweetened yoghurt, why not just buy natural yoghurt and sweeten it yourself - a little sugar never hurt anyone and there's no need to dump spoonfuls of it in. I have the opposite problem to you - I HATE artificially sweetened yoghurts, but so many people buy them that the choice of real yoghurt flavours is getting very limited.

You're welcome to say that "aspartame makes people fat" is not true (but in many cases it is true).

But there's no call for calling my experience with quitting aspartame and losing weight a lie.  I gained  a huge chunk of my weight while eating "diet" frozen meals and guzzling "diet" sodas all the time, wracked with insane sweets cravings. And it was after I cut all the "diet" stuff (and all the other preprocessed fake foods) out of my diet that I got my weight under control.  That is not a lie.

I'm happy for you if you've gotten a handle on your weight, and I'm sorry that it had to be through chemicals.  I personally believe that training your palate to appreciate foods that are not intensely sweet, salty, or greasy is a big step in learning to eat healthy and that artificial sweeteners prevent us from doing that, but hey, whatever works for you.

Aspartame doesn't make people fat, it's the fact that some people get sweet cravings after consuming it and then eat foods that DO make you fat. Diet soda in and of itself does not.

ETA: People need to get over this holier-than-thou attitude thing. Everyone on this website is looking for help, not judgment and condescending remarks.

But there's no call for calling my experience with quitting aspartame and losing weight a lie.

Not sure anyone here said you were lying...however the OP didnt ask your opinion about aspertame.....You dont use artifical sweetners...great!  Terrific!  I'm very happy for you.

~H~Tongue out

i'm 99% sure they don't use aspartame in canada in yogurt.  it's still in most diet sodas, but not yogurts.  why not eat sugar.  it's all natural!  :)

Yoplait Light Fat Free Yogurt is sweetened with Aspartame, and they have tons of yummy flavors.  It's in my fridge now.  Do you have that in Canada?

Sarah

I wonder if the reason it's no longer available in Canada is because of all the research linking it to various cancers and other health problems.

Just sayin.

Though I was also going to to suggest buying plain yogurt and sweetening yourself with whatever your poison of choice is....I like a bit of honey, you only need about 1 teaspoon (20 cals) or less to sweeten a 1/2C of plain yogurt, and you can get flavoured honeys, or add vanilla or cinnamon or fruit to flavour it, my favourite is cherry honey and cinnamon.

Why would you want to poison your body?

http://www.sweetpoison.com/aspartame-side-eff ects.html

there is so much evidence about it's negative effects that its no wonder compaies have stopped using it, although splenda is just as bad.

It's actually a tactic of the government, along with the florination of water to kill off over half of the worlds population but anyways...

try using honey or stevia, even a bit of orange juice in plain organic yogurt.

Hi Muscovite!

To be honest, you should have known better than to mention artificial sweetners here, it tends to bring out all the crack-pot ideas.

I think your best bet is to do what most people have suggested, buy plain and sweeten it yourself.

I'm sure it's not going to stop people from yelling at me, but the question was pretty clearly formulated, and reading it, I can't see "rant and rave at me about artificial sweeteners" written anywhere.

phanmo, I was thinking about that very thing last night, because the OP asked a direct question, does she have a valid complaint when others try to steer her away from the question and suggest other solutions? (I don't see much ranting or raving, except maybe the govt control thing lol)

What I came up with was this: no.

Suppose someone asked the question, "I plan to kill myself tonight, what is the best kind of rope for hanging?" I don't think that person has much of a complaint when people suggest hey maybe killing yourself is not such a great idea. In fact people who read that are pretty much obligated to make other suggestions, say no don't do it, etc.

I think muscovite is a reasonable person which is why she has not complained about all the alternate suggestions :)...we are here to tap into the massive pool of collective knowledge and opinions we can get from eachother, and are welcome to ignore the ones we don't like or agree with, right?
