Hey calorie counters :)
So last week I bought a ton of instant oatmeal. I tried it out plain with water and peanut butter and I hated it :)
I was wondering if oatmeal would work if I used 1% chocolate milk instead of water or normal milk. Would it taste good?

oatmeal is pretty versatile- you can put whatever you want in it. i like mine with maple syrup or honey. i also like vanilla extract. i use peanuts and chocolate protien powder somtimes and it tastes like reeses cups or i use sugar free jam and pb and its like pb+j. i dont like it with milk it makes the texture kinda wierd. another one of my faves is halved grapes with cinnamon and vanilla extract, sometimes with almonds chopped up. also- try some yogurt- whatever flavor- i use vanilla usually, all it takes is a tblsp or two and it tastes much better.
umm well I'm boring but I dont like the instant stuff as much...I like quaker regular oats like in the large container and then adding brown sugar/bananas/raisins/cinnamon or none/all of the above and i like it like that.
semi-skimmed milk and two tea spoons of sugar. mmm i like the idea of vanilla extract i'll try that. marmalade is nice to put into the centre, or a piece of low fat chocolate to melt. I only have mine sweet i dont think i could stomach savory in the morning. I also have the proper stuff, its hard to know how much milk you need with the instant. And I end up over doing it...
i love it cooked stovetop with milk, then add some cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves yada yada yada... then add blueberries, or some sweeter fruit like sliced strawberries or cherries, with a spoonful of vanilla yogurt. YUM! i miss my oatmeal mornings (i know whats for breakfast tomorrow!)
I really enjoy Steel Oats brand, a bit heartier and more filling than other oatmeals. Mix with some peanut butter, organic fat free milk and a little brown sugar...delic!!
If you don't like it, don't force yourself to eat it. Try Cream of Wheat (Farina) or a cup of grits...those are really good.
If you try to do the oatmeal thing...I like a little Splenda on it and some fresh fruit I even sometimes put the blueberries on top first then microwave it. the blueberries get warm and burst yummy!
I love it with 1/4 or 1/2 c. canned pumpkin, a little vanilla and half a graham cracker. It tastes like pumpkin pie! You could probably use Fiber one or something instead of graham crackers.
I take a 0.5-1 cup of frozen mixed berries (cheaper than fresh) and oatmeal, microwave it until water is absorbed. Then I crunch up pecans/almonds on top. Sometimes I add powdered flax seed, or sprinkle protein powder on it. It is good with melons and pineapple.
Personally, I'm a fan of the old-fashioned with skim milk and a little brown sugar. I like it a little on the dry side since I just cannot handle the mushy texture.
instant is like mush. Try old fashioned cooked on the stove, mix with berries or cut up fruit, top with a little skim milk or soy milk and YUM!!!
This is the easiest way to make oatmeal, ever. And it uses those yummy chewy steelcut oats, not the wallpaper-glue-like substance that is instant oatmeal.

Obviously you can skip the half-and-half in the recipe, and use some fruits with less sugar in them. I have usually done the recipe for four servings and my parents and i have three big bowls. I have also done it in a mini crock pot, but it doesn't work so well to just make one serving. Two is fine, and you can reheat it the next day without too much of a problem.
I wish Alton Brown wasn't already married...
I put a tablespoon of cocoa in mine, with a quarter cup non fat plain yogurt. A cut up banana...... and its divine!
Here are two links for oatmeal recipes. I hope that helps. I keep those links posted (as well as my own recipes) in my journal so that they are easy to find for anyone else.
I eat throw in frozen blueberries before cooking, or strawberries after cooking. Sometimes I'll stir in a half cup of applesauce and it's great. I hated oatmeal too.
