I've tons...I have been collecting ideas for about 17 years because I get really bored with always having the same thing. My ideas depend on your tastes and time for cooking. I'll share what I've got if you want it!! :)
List your favorite foods, healthy or not, and see if I can recommend some things : )
wow i would be happy to eat that everyday, i go through spells of eating the same things everyday for a week right now i am on a veggie stirfry with cabbage, carrots, egg whites and sometype of cheese on top with pita bread, i will eat this about 300 cals for dinner and after my massive fruit salad with yogurt and sponge biscuits inside. that will be like 300cals also. i just love that fruit salad!
Switching around the different elements.
- Chicken.... replace with..... lamb, pork, fish, shellfish, beans, lentils, chickpeas, tofu, beef, eggs, turkey....
- Brown Rice.... alternate with .... wholewheat pasta, noodles, basmati rice, new potatoes, sweet potatoes, quinoa grain, barley, cous-cous, wholemeal bread
- Broccoli..... there are lots of different vegetables... pick any
How about.... grilled salmon fillet dressed with lemon-juice black pepper and olive oil served with some stir-fried 'julienne' (thin strips) of courgette and carrot, mange-touts and noodles with a little soy sauce? That's a really quick, easy dish
wow, GI Jane, that salmon sounds fantastic, you may have just planned my dinner : )
Do you like chilli? I make it with minced beef, carrots, mushrooms, tinned and fresh tomatos, onion, sweet potato, red kidney beans, red chilli peppers, stock cube, mixed herbs etc.
It makes a big pot which you can freeze or just eat throughout the week :)
Tuna steaks, salmon, or scallops are quick and easy. And I know you said you were bored with chicken breasts, but there is so much you can do with it and still keep the calories down. Check out kraftfoods.com. Change up your veggies a little, or have a great salad. There are just so many possibilities.
Another great site is allrecipes.com. Those aren't always low cal, but with a few subs, you can make it that way.
Print out this List of the World's Healthiest Foods then cross out any foods you don't like. Base your shopping list on the list.
Suggestions:
Look for alternate protein sources, like beans and lentils, nuts, or cheese.
Try other whole grains, such as quinoa, bulghur wheat and whole wheat couscous - plan on 3 servings a day, and that would include things like whole grain bread.
Plan on at least a cup of a dark green vegetable (there are so many!) and a half cup of a vegetable of another color for both lunch and dinner.
Choose two fruits each day.
Make sure you get your milk or milk substitute products.
Add a tablespoon of good fat a day (olive oil, avocados etc)
With the infinite variety available, there's no need to get stuck in a food rut.
- cottage cheese
- greek yogurt
- turkey
- veggie burgers
- sweet potato
- squash/zucchini
- variety of fruits (apples, pears, strawberries, peaches, blueberries, etc)
- nuts
- cheese
- english muffins
- pb & j
- soups/stews
- stir-fries
- baked fish
When you're limiting your calories, you have to make them all count.
Tonight for dinner I'm having: a broiled salmon filet with a low fat sour cream sauce made with dill and lemon juice. As a side I am having grilled asparagus and (maybe, if I'm good) a slice of home made bread.
Nom nom.
Why are you only eating that? "Diets" don't work. If that is some kind of special diet you need to re-think it. Loosing weight and keeping it off is not about dieting. It is about clean/balanced eating and exercise and eating a variety of foods. There are very few things you have to cut out completely. Just make healthy choices, complex carbs instead of simple, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, lowfat dairy and protein, healthy fat. I don't eat fried food, transfats, sugary drinks, artificial sweeteners and fast foods.
You are setting yourself up for failure if you extremely limit your foods and it is not healthy. You need variety. If it is not something you can stick with for the rest of your life it will not work.
Do a search for clean/balanced eating.
Im not on a "diet" Im TRYING to eat healthy. and im new to this so i wanted some suggestions for healthy food.
How about a home made chicken soup made from chicken stock (homemade preferred), 1 baked chicken breast shredded, some brown rice, and some frozen peas?
-frozen fish (thawed, then grilled or baked)
-homemade turkey burgers
-beans and rice
-tabbouleh
-greek yogurt
-tofu/tempeh
-homemade trail mix
-kale chips
-lentil soup
-quinoa salad
-grilled almond butter & banana sandwich
-eggs
-avacado & salt on whole grain toast
-fruit salad with yogurt & flax seed
Hopefully this helped! Search around on the internet and you'll find tons of recipes for some of these meal ideas. Good luck!
Chicken, salmon, tuna, beef, turkey, fish. Whole grains, bread, rice, pasta, cereal, oatmeal. Cheese, cottage cheese, milk, eggs. Any fruits and vegetables. Buckwheat, nuts, seeds, beans, homemade anything. You can alter almost any recipe to be clean/balanced/low cal.
From my experience, when I get bored with food, it means I'm not being creative enough with herbs and spices. You can eat pretty basic, cheap foods and make them really interesting with seasoning.
Just be creative! Take some time strolling down the grocery store aisles, looking at nutrition labels, and picking out things you enjoy!
It took me a couple weeks to start coming up with new recipes. The best tip I can give you, is to buy a wide variety of spices! Buy one everytime you go to the grocery store.
For example, chicken breast could be made into a million different dishes because of spices. Spanish chicken with cumin. Italian chicken with oregano. Morroccan chicken with curry. You really can mix it up.
Instead of chicken you could have lean steak, ground turkey, any kind of fish, pork. Or try meatless and subsitute beans as your protein.
Practice in the kitchen makes perfect. :)
courtesy of Sonoma....Chili-Lime chicken skewers
1) finely shredd lime peel (from 1 lime) into bowl, add 1 1/2 teaspoon of chile pepper, garlic-herb seasoning (i use mrs. dash garlic-herb) and mix together. Rub (pour over and coat) over 1 in. cut chicken breast strips. Thread chicken onto skewers and bbq or broil in oven (turning once) til done (10-15 min.)
2) use pork or chicken: sprinkle pieces with chili powder (i coat heavily) and massage it in a bit; chop up some garlic (to your taste); squeeze the juice from one or two limes; put it all in a ziplock bag; pour a can of beer over the top and marinate for a couple hours (or while you are at work....leave it in the fridge!); take meat out and cook it your favorite way...broil, bbq, etc. Discard the liquid.
3) Chicken Salad: 1 lb. cubed cooked chicken, 1 granny smith apple, cored and chopped, 3/4 c. celery chopped, 1/3 c. green onions chopped, 2 TBS parsley chopped, 2 TBS walnuts chopped; put it all in a bowl and stir. In another bowl: 2TBS light sour cream, 3 TBS red wine viegar, 2TBS light mayo, 1/2 tsp kosher salt, 1/8 tsp black pepper; mix and add to chicken mixture. Top a serving of mixture over your favorite dark green leafies!!
Not sure if anyone suggested, but you can also try french couscous. It takes 2 minutes to prepare.
I would look at allrecipes.com for ideas. I also watch the TV program Cook Yourself Thin, they give some good ideas.
Salmon, Tuna, Black Cod, Halibut, Shrimp, Scallops, Clams, Mussels? Why not try having some fish? And if fillets are too expensive for you - eating the canned or frozen kinds are pretty much just as good (except when it comes to salmon - nothing beats a fresh salmon fillet!)...
As for your brown rice... why not try wild rice, rissoto or quinoa
And instead of Broccoli (although it's super good for you) try sauteed Kale or Roasted Brussels Sprouts or steamed Green beans or Spaghetti Squash
A meal example: Salmon Fillet with Spaghetti Squash, Diced Tomatoes, Olives, Capers, Olive Oil, Chopped Onion & Chopped Fennel with a bit of quinoa!
