"I'm sorry, but 120 on my frame?"
Did anyone else read this article in People. I have never heard of this girl, probably because I don't watch TV much and definitely wouldnt watch the new 90210 but this girl, Shenae Grimes says,
"At one point, they said I was 85 lbs. And then they said my average weight when I am healthy is apparently 120. I'm sorry, but 120 on my frame? I'd be a little chunky money walking around!" - Oh sorry, edited to add: She is 5'3"
Wow - this is exactly what is wrong with Hollywood. I hope my daughter doesn't even get this shallow, crappy frame of mind when she is older. Boy...I have a road ahead of me trying to teach her that this is NOT the way real people should be. Yikes. Sickening really.
Anorexia is a terrible disease... I don't know the girl but if she thinks 120 is 'fat' then she's still got the anorexic mindset no matter what her weight is.
Basically the whole article was about how she is being accused of having an eating disorder. She says she doesn't. I agree, thinking 120 for a 5'3" woman is 'chunky' is definitely a mental disorder in itself.
yeah i was pissed when i read this, because its this type of mentality that drives millions of girls and women to eating disorders and an unhealthy lifestyle. I wish i was 120!
I didn't read the article, but your post pretty much sums it up. And yes, it is disturbing. Kind of like realizing that Victoria Beckham has a waist that it not much larger than my thigh -- granted, I have muscular legs, but really.....
The best thing you can do for your daughter is to embrace a healthy attitude about food, exercise and overall wellness. And then work to embrace your body at whatever point it may be at. If we teach our children through example the power of being at peace with our bodies -- even if we are chunky monkies -- it should help counter the media hype around perfection. Or at least I am hoping this is the case (I have a daughter as well).
Jenny, I agree. That is why I am programming it in my head about how cautious to be about weight with my daughter. Lovely what Hollywood does.
I am trying to get back to 125 (from current 148). I didn't want to go below 122! I am only 5'1". So, yea, I was a porker. Geez. If I was 100 lbs (which is actually what is 'recommended' for my height) I would look HORRIBLE, not to mention emaciated. I am not a small frame but still.
Good, I am glad I am not the only one thinking the way of her thinking is totally distorted.
On another note, I did smell Armani Code for women for the first time in this issue and that's what I want for Christmas. =)

I am already trying to get her to eat a bit more healthy. I am trying really hard myself which makes me a great example. She is 5 now and if I don't start instilling these healthy ways now, she will think its okay to be that way. It is highly unlikely that she will be thinner. She has my build almost exactly and her dad is 5'10" and VERY thin, he is about 150 pounds. But, as it looks 'now' she is taking over my build. Maybe that will change, maybe it won't but I definitely don't want her thinking that behavior is by any means, normal.
I have never heard of Shenae Grimes, but I already want to slap her.
Oh dear. My thinnest weight was just under 120 pounds and I'm 5'3 as well. Sure, I wasn't toned, but I certainly didn't think I was a chunky monkey (although, that kinda sounds like a cute nickname).
All the girls on the new 90210 series are frighteningly thin.
It seems the anorexia has already ate this girl's, muscle, fat and is now starting to eat at her brain for her to think such a thing. :P
120 at 5'3 is certainly not as quoted by a complete misinformed girl *chunky monkey* according to a BMI chart that is perfectly healthy and by no means is it in the category of *overweight.* Maybe by HollyWEIRD standards, but not the norm. It's just amazing how obsessed everyone is with *celebrity* how we take their standards as to what is ideal over a well educated doctor. It's really, really disturbing.
I think the best thing for your daughter is to have her involved in school activities (keeping her away from the tv.) and letting her do things she enjoys where she will be able to associate with people and will build her self esteem. And def. try to limit the magazines though I know that can be hard as I am a total magazine junkie. Haha. Maybe look them over first or something and if it isn't too bad let her look at them if she wishes, but hopefully her interests are in more important things then *HollyWEIRD.*
I'm going to have to disagree with everyone else's opinion on this topic.
I'm 5'2(close to her height) and at 120 pounds. To be honest; it is a little too much for such small height.
Of course; it depends on where that weight is distributed but either way that much weight on such a small body definitely overwhelms.
But; I'll agree with one thing..85 pounds? That's too extreme.

I also will have to disagree with the prevailing opinion here, and agree with vicky. I think that while85 is most def very very low, 120 on a 5'3 with a very small fframe could be heavier-looking for some. Not all people have been average weights their whole lives. you have to take into account a person's history (their growth and weight charts, the percentiles she falls in that she has patterned over the years). perhaps she has always been small and feels that for her she would never need to be that heavy to be healthy. keep in mind those whose genes predispose them for a lower weight than the average.
but i will admit that this whole hollywood anorexia trend is definetely present and it could have detrimental effects on the younger girls and boys who are abosrbing the media.
um, yeah. i'm with vicky. some people are just tiny. especially at that age.
i have a friend who's my height (5'8") and is most comfortable at 120. she's just little. she has tiny hands, tiny feet. even her head is tiny (not her brain, but her head). i'm small framed, but she doesn't even register on that scale.
and the fact is, TV and the movies favour people (not just women) who are tiny.
i don't think most people in the entertainment industry want to go around talking about their weight. it's not very interesting. but to have a good relationship with the media, they're kind of obligated to answer the questions.
blame People magazine if you must, but don't blame shanae grimes.
I'm 5'5" and I weigh 116-122 (depending on time of day/month/etc.) I am not "skinny." I'd say that I'm fit, and I have a ways to go before I'm happy with my body, but I do think that 120 on 5'3" would be a little overweight. Especially if she is more fat than muscle...

i agree. 120 can look a little chunky on someone who is 5'3" and small framed, as she is.. not very, but it can. vice versa, on a large framed 5'3" 120 can look way too low. it really depends on the person. weight doesn't look the same on everyone who is the same height. some people carry their weight really badly and aren't lucky enough to have big bones.
85 is gross and pushing it though. no excuse there.. no matter how small framed.
she didn't say she was 85. she said that the media reported that she was 85.
Well I'm also 5'3 and at 120 I was in no way shape or form *fat.* I had curves in the right places. That's why I found this whole thing ridiculous. 120 on the BMI chart is healthy and last I knew healthy is not overweight. It may not be as skinny by HollyWEIRD standards. But, it certainly isn't pushing it into the overweight area.
I have to agree that it's all about your frame. I'm 5'5" with an extremely tiny frame. People always marvel at my small wrists and size 3.5 ring finger. What sucks though is I look best at 110 pounds, which according to BMI (don't pay much attention to that anyhow) claims I'm underweight.
I'm about 119 right now and want to lose another 5 pounds before my wedding in the spring (slow and steady wins the race) and there is a drastic difference in how I look now as oppose to how I looked 5 pounds ago.
I envy people who can put on 10 pounds and no one is the wiser.

I think it just depends on the frame and the distribution of fat. I'm 115 at 5'5" and I'm skinny-fat, since I have a low weight but fairly high fat percentage with not much muscle (although the balance is shifting!). If that weight was distributed to make me look curvy, I would love that and be happy with my shape- but I have belly pudge and no butt or boobs, so at times I do feel like a chunky monkey. Maybe she's built in a way that 120 would look chubby on her.
True. But, she really shouldn't even have commented. Think about how many girls are going to read that and think, "What, I weigh that or more then that!, What am I, FAT?!" Stuff like this just leads to major self esteem issues. Girls don't need role models like this. It's very disturbing and heartbreaking.

Agreed. Not sure what People was thinking, printing the flippant remarks of a teenager.
