I started my diet Dec14 and have lost 14lbs by Jan9th but now i'm stuck...why?  I'm 51 years old woman 6.5 wrists 5'8"height medium build, measurements are 45-40-40 my goal is 38-28-35 and 135-140lbs have been there and done that....now at 183 i've been this since the 9th i have a back dissability so walking and standing are out.  I bought an upright magnetic exercise bike for xmas and i ride it daily to achieve 500calories and 1 hour burned.  I take sundays off to rest.  My bmr is 1526 and my activity added is suppose to be 2000 approx. now if i'm eating 1000 approx/day no fats or sugars, no junk food why am i not losing weight.  I also have tried eating before and after working out and fluctuating my calories by 200 every couple of days.  I don't know what else i can do...any suggestions....P.s. i have been all over the net and some say this and some say that....what do you say???  I lost more weight eating 800/cal/day and not exercising..go fiqure.  I'm using 3lbs doing arm exercisings to tone the triceps and biceps 3/wk too.  2 days ago i rode off 1800 calories 4 hours on the bike and nothing changed on the scale.??  I really stick very close to 1000/day but sometimes i burn(ride) off more then 500/cal.....I'm getting very discouraged.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A woman should NEVER eat less than 1200.  That is sedentary also, if you're exercising, you will need to eat back those calories to maintain your highest safe deficit.

The reason you're stalling out is because you are not eating enough calories for your organs to run, so your metabolism has lowered to compensate.

Also please keep in mind that some Vitamins can only be absorbed into your body by fat, so by eating zero fat you are starving your body of nutrients as well.

I used your stats on Sedentary and put them into the Expenditure tool on Calorie Count and got:

"You burn 2000 calories during a typical day. Remember that this estimate is based on your body weight, height, age, gender, and your average level of activity."

1200-2000 = 800 this is your highest safe deficit.  You can lose 1.6lbs a week this way.

If you burn 500 calories on your bike, your total burn will be

2000 + 500 = 2500

2500 - 800 = 1700 calories to eat.
I'm clearly not an expert but I think you need to incorporate more fats into your diet. The human body cannot survive without them.
You have to eat to keep your metabolism up and running...otherwise you're wasting your time on your exercise bike.  Your body is trying to hang on to whatever you have, because rightfully so, it doesn't know when it will get more fat and sugars and calories.  Increase your calories to 1700, with limited fat and sugars (30 grams or less of fat, and 200 grams or less of carbs).  Good carbs can come from whole wheat bread, oatmeal, brown rice.  Good fats can come from tuna, salmon, and nuts.  Good luck!
You need to eat more than 1200 to be safe!!!! This is the biggest misconception if have seen on CC. I'm assuming you calculated your BMR using the Harris benedict equation, Which gave you the 1526! you should never eat below this!!!!! (of course once you lose weight the bmr goes down and that is the new guideline)  Your bmr is not what you burn just going to work and sitting all day.  This is what you would burn buy sleeping for 24/hr!!! It is the min your body needs to keep it alive!!! If you eat below you go into starvation.  1200 is and average bmr and does not apply to someone with your height and weight!  No matter what your daily goal is for the deficit, this number should never drop.  If you want a 500 cal deficit, you need to burn 1526+ 500.  Now at sedentary you burn almost 1837 cal by just being awake and working etc.. so that means if you have day that you don't workout you can only have a 300 cal deficit.  The only way to increase the deficit is to increase the excercise above the bmr! once your weight goes down recalcuate your BMR and use that as the new min cals to eat!

my bmr is 1450, in sept I was 129lbs for about 4 months I was only eating 1100, a day,I gained 15 lbs. Once i bumped my eating I gained a few pounds initially and then dropped back down to 134 within a few months (and was not exercising cuz i did't have time) I lost 15lbs by doing my normal day and eating more!!!

this is why, when your body is starving it is afraid it would get food, so when you do feed it, it stores everything you eat and turns it into fat (even if you were not eating fats or sugars).  when you start eating more, initially you may gain because your body is still in storing mode but once it realizes it is consistantly getting food, it will speed up your metabolism and you will start to drop

Low fat/low carb diets: no matter what you eat, anything left over will be turned to fat that is why low fat low carb diets are bull. you need 50% carbs 20% fat and 30% protein to lose fat on your body. If someone at a diet without any sugar or fat, but ate more than they burned, the food would still turn to fat!

Well i am sorry i didn't get back to you sooner, i thought i would wait....i am now 174 so i must be doing something right...i have been on several different locations and i keep getting differnet answers.  CAN anyone HELP me i'm 175 5'8" i'll be 52 this thursday feb28th medium build measurments are 42-37-39 now i want to get to 38-28-35 been there and done that.  To ACHIEVE a 1000/day deficit and riding the indoor bike 1500 calories a week somedays i ride 800 calories so i eat more somedays i ride only 300 plus 30 minutes twice/week workout with dumbbells.  So instead of adding up the calories i burn and then divide into 7 days to get a balance of cals to eat daily what i do is this tell me is this wrong????  I will say for example(i allow only so much fat, carbs, sugar,etc...within the dieting limits sodium can be a problem sometimes(tinned stuff) anyway so what i do is this i will get up eat a small bkfst then ride my bike say for 300 cal changing the pace up and sweating at end and increased heart rate...so i will eat 300 more calories so i burned 2300 according to everthing this retired body does, sitting, cooking, sleeping, washing dishes, etc it comes up to 2000-2100 with the biking i burned 2300 so i'll eat 1000 less equaling 1000 for the day.....Is this okay when i exercise i eat more but try and keep the 1000 deficit....days i don't work out well?????           Any suggestions why i'm NOT losing  when my journal says ive burned 7000 for that week.  When do i start counting my WEEK if i don't diet one day but don't eat more then i burn when do i start counting the daily deficit???????

You've lost about 9 lbs over the past month and a half.  I think you're doing great! Cool
