I'm a teen having a hard time...

Quote  |  Reply
Hi everyone. I am 15, 5'4", and weigh 133 lbs.  I am always obsessing over how I look, how many calories I've eaten, and how I need to lose weight SOON.  People always tell me that I'm "thin" and such, but they must just be acting nice, b/c everytime I look in the mirror, I just see a fat girl, who compared to all others around me, is just gross.  I was hoping I could get some help, b/c I just want to be a normal teenager.  If anybody has any advice, I'm so desperate, please give me some.  I really appreciate the time you are taking to read this.  Thank you all.

I think what you need to do is listen to your belly. If it's hungry, go get something to eat. Something that sounds good, no matter how many calories it has. Ignore the nutrition facts and all that jazz. And when you're full, stop eating. Eat balanced meals and get your nutrition and all that stuff, and I think it will stop being so prominent in your mind. Depending on how much you're restricting, it's going to be pretty hard.

I saw a documentary once on eating disorders, and how the less you eat the more you think about food. They did a study with a bunch of men, and cut their meals in half. After they had lost about a third of their orignal weight, they started to act like people with eating disorders. They were obsessed with any mention of food, even in a different context (like "food for thought"). So that's why I say that.

Of course, I don't really know how good my advice is since I don't have any firsthand experience with eating disorders or anything. So I can be ignored. >_>
130 is in the normal weight range for your height.

Don't worry so much about calories or the number on the scale.  Instead, learn about good nutrition and how to choose the healthiest foods.  You'll form good eating habits that will last you a lifetime.

I'm your age and height and I can tell you for certain that no one scrutinizes your weight and your body as much as yourself. 133 pounds is a perfectly normal weight for us. Remember, you are your own worst critic-- no one is judging you!
I'm 5'4" and weigh 133 too. When I look in  the mirror, sometimes I think I look fat - but then I look at photographs and in those I look thin. So get a second opinion from yourself and listen to your friends who are telling you you are thin.

Also, since you're only 15, you are still growing and undereating is not a good idea - there are many threads about the awful things you can do to your body by not giving it enough nutrition, and teens need different calorie amounts per day than adults do, so you should be using different teen calculators anyways.
You are a good weight for your height. It is really easy at your age to obsess over weight, especially with all the ultra thin models out there in the magazines.

Maybe you need to start an exercise program. It will help you feel healthier, look more fit and over time boost your confidence.
That's such a TOUGH age. I wish all you teenagers were more confident. Please, try to change your THINKING rather than your body. You can reshape your body all you want but if you don't like yourself now, you won't like yourself later. Look in the mirror and practice saying NICE things to yourself. Maybe, for every bad thing you say, make it a rule that you have to counter it with something nice. If you find that you can't change how you feel about yourself, maybe talk to a counselor or therapist. I'm afraid you'll have a long, hard, and sad road ahead of you if you don't get a grip on this. On a happy note, a lot of times, this kind of thing improves with age! You just don't care as much what other people think when you are older.
I'm in the same boat as you hun, I'm fifteen (just had my b-day!) I'm 5' 9" and weigh 155.  All my friends are so skinny and whenever I say anything about my weight they tell me I'm not fat, but I feel sooo big!  And according to my height I'm at a healthy weight, but my bathing suit begs to differ.  I eat healthier than all my friends but I still gain weight and I hate it.  SO, anywho, whats ur goal wegiht?  Mine is 140-145
