I'm on Toprol

Quote  |  Reply

Hi,

I'm trying to find out if my Toprol can affect the intensity of my workouts. I would like to move to the next level of intensity and would like to know if my meds can slow my heart beats too much. I've been on a diet since the 2nd week of January and have lost 30 Lbs. I'm walking 3-6 miles a day. But would like to increase the speed and can't seem to break 15 minute miles or run for more than 4 minutes at a time. I would think that I should be able to at least jog consistantly by now. I'm almost 61.

Hi.I worked as a doctor assistant for 2 years.During the preagnancy I was taking Toprol and now still on it.The same doctor I worked for-now treats Me.

There is no way that meds going to slow your heartbeat, the while you run-if you start running your heart rate will go UP...I don't know for how long you have high BP-but you should know High Blood Pressure is "Silent Killer".You may not feel it or see it, but if you not careful- you can get hurt....

I am 29.My doc. told me that I can walk a few miles a day,but no more than that!

Well, since my original post in May, I've lost another 12 Lbs.   I do 5-6 miles a day. Takes me about 72 minutes. So I've broken thru the 15 minute time.  Still take my meds too.

Unless your Doctor is a cardiologist, I'd say a few miles a day is too little.

You are doing wonderfully well, at an average of 5 pounds a month, being active and almost 61. You are a model!

I would take into consideration the stress on your joints pushing yourself beyond your body's 61 year old frame this may not be a kindness to yourself.

From experience I pushed myself too hard on my 60 year old frame and injured my knee. This set me back 8 months before I could fully walk at where I was before the injury.

With a 42 pound weight reduction has your BP remained high? Does your doctor know of your weight drop? I wonder if a conversation with your doctor is in order.

Just some thoughts, Leslie

I've found that my body will tell me when and where I can push it, if I listen to it. I walk for at least a mile before doing any running. Diet plays a big factor in how good I feel when exercising. But the best thing is I've noticed things are getting much easier to do as I lose more weigh and it re-inforces my goal to stay on my diet if I want to keep feeling this way. I've also found that when I do cheat, it just doesn't taste that good. I guess I'm getting used to my new diet. One thing I have found is, I like spicely, hot food more each day. Thanks for the advice!

Hi, My wife took my pressure today and its 107 over 81. Should I ask the doctor to take me off the toprol? We tried it twice today, once when I first got up and j ust moments ago after I had finished my daily 6 miles. Both times it was almost the same. Is it too low?

You should speak to your doctor about your concerns. Toprol does slow the heart rate. My doctor at the time that I was diagnosed with hypertension put me on it for some reason. It made my heart rate drop down into the upper 40's. The problem with trying to exercise while on a med that slows your heart rate is that it is hard to overcome the med. When you exercise, your muscles need more oxygen, therefore your heart beats faster to get the oxygen to them via your blood. Log your blood pressures (and heart rates) for a week and how you are feeling and present the log to your doctor and ask him if maybe the dose needs to be reduced or, changed. Good luck and keep up the good work!
