I don't think it matters since water doesn't change the composition of the whey... however, if the bottle gets too hot (like above 40ºC) the proteins could become denatured meaning they would be destroyed. Other than that, I don't see why there would be a problem with mixing it in advance...

thanks for the reply. I had to ask. Whey protein is pricey and it would suck if i was drinking it and it had somehow already lost its benefit by pre-mixing!

By the way, how does that stuff taste? (I know this is a hard question, but can you please describe it to the best of your ability?) I've always wanted to try it, but I am skeptical of trying new things without knowing what they are...

Why not just buy a shaker bottle and mix it at the gym using their water cooler?

I put my scoop of whey in a Ziploc bag, then dump it into the shaker and fill it with water just before I leave the gym.

It really depends on the brand and flavor, but in general it doesn't taste as good in water as it does in milk.

I have a big bag of whey protein that I bought from Costco or Sams Club, can't remember which. I think its called EAS or something? They have ones that are half whey and half soy protein but I always go for 100% whey. Its a little pricey but whatever. I like the vanilla flavor, I make amazing and healthy banana bread with it.

So it's okay to put protein powder in baking?

Optimum Nutrition whey, Double Rich or Milk Chocolate.

I think the whey is heat sensitive.  It could add good flavor but you might want to go with something else to boost protein.

Does soy protein get effected by heat? (sorry for stealing the thread, i've been wondering about this for a few days now!)

I think soy protein is fine with heating. I've read the protein isolates in soy are headed anyways when manufactured.

As far as taste and flavor preference, I think it depends on what you're going to mix it with.  When I was having trouble getting my calories (due to illness), my nutritionist had me put whey protein in my juice, hot cereal, pudding, etc. - basically anything I could stand.  If you're going to mix it with food or drink that already has a "taste," I would definitely go with the "tasteless" variety.  I got mine at GNC.  My mom puts hers in her morning coffee and loves it.  Even the tasteless variety has a bit of a taste, but it's not too bad.  Good luck!

 You know, I've been curious about this, too - I've seen conflicting information all over the place - there was a somewhat tense debate on a bodybuildling forum I found.  I think the truth is elusive (some have even supposedly quoted reps from Designer Whey)!

There's the theory that heating it cause denaturization, but honestly, I'm not sure how that really affects the protein (if it becomes unusable, and if so - does that mean unusable as a protein or unusable as a source of calories or...who knows!).

I have the protein shake of whey before I go and workout. I love the stuff. I often use it to curb my craving around 3 before dinner. A half of scoop really helps me out during the day.

I'm not a big breakfast person either, and it's a good tool to use for breakfast as well. I mix up 1 scoop and add skim milk and a fat free yogurt. It really helps me during the day, and that shake will carry me all the way to lunch.

It's also good to have after the workout, but I always use it before the work out. That works for me.

I've tried many different types of whey protein and most of them were not very pleasant tasting. Usually had to hold my nose to get it down and I could always detect it in my smoothies.

Someone here recommended Optimum Nutrition's chocolate (I think it was you dm84!) It really does taste good for whey protein. No horrible lingering after taste like others I've tried. I can even easily drink it mixed with water which is saying alot for me and whey protein. Tastes even better with skim milk.

I would put it in a ziplock and mix with water at the gym.

As for taste, I bought french vanilla Designer whey protein, first time ever I buy whey protein and I mixed with water and it taste nasty. So I started to mix with milk, but since I don't like the taste of plain milk, I made a mix with papaya, milk, flaxseed and cinnamon. It tastes amazing.
