Imus Strikes Again!!!
So anyone with a radio, t.v., internet....etc. knows that Don Imus is at it again. He's put his foot in his mouth once more and added insult to injury with his racially insinuative blunders. Is he simply trying to bring social awareness to racial profiling, or is he trying to pontificate the idea that you have to be a specific skin color to demonstrate certain behaviors? Either way, the man is old enough to know better than to disrespect a whole race and believe no one will have a word to utter on the subject. So, what are you thoughts people? Let's keep this an intellectual discussion and not be racist about it.
Is it wrong that I don't know who Don Imus is? I'll look him up now to satisfy my curiosity. I will also ponder your question and get back to you.
He was the guy who said "nappy headed hos" when referring to black players on a women's basketball team.
Well... he claims that he wasn't being disrespectful, he was trying to make the point that African Americans are being picked on by the cops. HA! I heard the clip on the news this morning. That may have been what he MEANT... but it sure didn't sound like that is what he was saying.
The problem is communication is not just about what we mean to say, it is also about how people interpret our words. I think he's gonna have a really hard time getting out from under this one, considering his previous faux pas.
And jewels.... yes, people DO still listen to him, just like they listen to Rush Limbaugh and Howard Stern and the rest of those nuts.
Personally, I think he's an elitist schmuck.
Look I don't care what he says, just in his right to say it and everyone's right to respond in the vernacular they see fit to use.
I am looking forward to the day when political correctness gets a flush down the proverbial toilet...where it rightfully belongs.
oh him, I saw him on the Daily Show once. He seemed like a bit of a prat.
I don't know if he's only well-known in the US, or if I'm just a stupid, uninformed person, but I've never even heard of him...
Who is he and what did he do?
(I get the main idea about him being racist, but that's probably not the whole story XD)
The latest comments by Imus to come under scrutiny were aired on Monday’s broadcast. During a conversation about Jones’ run-ins with the law, Imus asked, “What color is he?” Sports announcer Warner Wolf said Jones—formerly known as Pacman—is “African-American.” Imus responded: “There you go. Now we know.”
“What people should be outraged about is that they arrest blacks for no reason,” Imus said Tuesday. “I mean, there’s no reason to arrest this kid six times. Maybe he did something once, but everyone does something once.”
I think no matter what he says now regarding race, whether with good or bad intentions, people are going to interpret it as something hateful. He should just stay away from that subject.
I'm gonna take heat for this, but I think people need to give him a break.
Yeah, we all know the comments that got him fired were completely inappropriate & ridiculous, but he already lost his job. I really don't think these comments were racist- he's not THAT asanine that he'd do something like that again.
& honestly, there are many people that say things much more blatantly offensive & racist that don't get portrayed like this.

I think people just like to find new things to get angry and rant about. I didn't think it was a big deal compared to what he said before but then again I didn't hear the whole interview.
I agree, on some level, with all the comments so far. I really don't think he's a bad guy. I just think given his previous predaliction for getting caught in the crossfire of criticism over his racially motivated remarks, he ought to know better. I remember watching him with my mom when I was a kid. He's made many great contributions to society both by bringing awareness to current events as well as his charitable organization for youth. The bottom line is he needs to be more mindful of the way he is presenting his views. If anything, he should know by now that one sentence laced with the wrong inuendo can cause an uproar. I definitely think the subject of racial profiling needs to be brought up to get people thinking and to change the way society views our differences. I just think that perhaps he needs to clarify his views to make sure that all parties listening absolutely, 100% have no reason to crucify him for his sarcastic comments. Unfortunately, alot is lost not being able to read facial expressions and he is not on T.V. anymore.
Yea... where is the outrage when the shoe is on the other foot? Sorry but when someone who is not white makes VERY VICIOUS statements they are given a pass, white person says something in passing he gets fired.
That is the very definition of racism.
Hi vstar, I agree, He was just trying to find his way out again by saying Pacman was being picked on by the cops. Pacmand couldn't stay out of trouble here.
We put up with pacman here in Tn. for the last two years. He couldn't keep himself out of trouble. He was just full of himself. He was always hanging out at the bars and strip clubs and getting into trouble for guns. (someone got shot at a strip bar in another state) and drug problem. He insults woman and spit on them and managed to pay his way out of acouple of those problems. Pacman came here when he was drafted from west Virginia (WVU) and didn't show up for first practices because he had the nerve to demand his money up front and never did give the Titians what they paid for. His house is up for repo even with all the millions he was paid. Good by to him and good luck Tx. So Imus was just trying to dig his way back out of his racist remark because Pacman deserved every thing he got.
i kinda feel sorry for Don. He has a serious illness: Perpetual Verbal Diarrhea.![]()
I feel bad for the guy, too. From (too much) personal experience, I know how it feels to mean something, formulate a statement that sounds perfectly reasonable in your head, say it, THEN realize how ridiculous it really sounded and how it conveyed a completely different message than intended. At that point, it doesn't matter what you meant. No one cares. All they care about is what you actually said and how best to attack you for it.
The Guy is a Shock Jockey. It's his JOB to be on the edge. I don't know what everyone's so shocked about. Sometimes, as a shock jockey, you go over the line. Know what? It gives him what he needs.. more interest, better ratings.
Again, folks, this is his job.

Ha! ROFL! I'm at work and my co-workers just looked up when I almost lost my coffee. Way to go girl!
cstefan: I absolutely agree with you on this one. My best friend is black and we talk alot about descrimination. I am a very open person, but have found in my life many times that it is perfectly acceptable for me as a white person to be decribed as 'whitey, cracker, Casper", and a barrage of other derrogitory names. I even went to HR at a previous job due to a particular associate calling me the above referenced names and making statements about how she would never attend a "white" picnic again because white people don't know how to cook or party. Not a thing was done to stop her abuse. I never persued legal action. I eventually found a better position elsewhere, but I know for a fact that had I said anything even remotely similar to the things she said to me, I would have been immediately fired. Don't get me wrong. I am in no way comparing the racial descrimination that I endured to the longstanding reputation of abuse experienced by African Americans throughout history and the present. There is no comparison. But discrimination is discrimination, no matter what the color of your skin may be.
What did he say this time? Do you have a quote?

Could not agree more.

This is what was said as captioned by the Chicago Sun Times.......
The latest comments by Imus to come under scrutiny were aired on Monday's broadcast. During a conversation about Jones' run-ins with the law, Imus asked, ''What color is he?'' Sports announcer Warner Wolf said Jones -- formerly known as Pacman -- is ''African-American.'' Imus responded: ''There you go. Now we know.''
The on-air exchange came months after Imus' return to work on a new show on WABC-AM following his firing from MSNBC and CBS Radio for calling the Rutgers University women's basketball team ''nappy-headed hos.''
When he returned to work, Imus gave a lengthy on-air apology and pledged to use his new show to foster an open dialogue on race relations.
Co-host Karith Foster, who is black, came to Imus' defense during Tuesday's broadcast, saying, ''People who interpret what you said as racist clearly didn't hear the whole thing, and they don't know who you are and what the program is about -- and they obviously haven't been listening.''
Jones told The Dallas Morning News in Tuesday editions that he's upset by Imus' comments and plans to pray for the radio host.
''I'm truly upset about the comments,'' Jones said. ''Obviously Mr. Imus has problems with African-Americans. I'm upset, and I hope the station he works for handles it accordingly. I will pray for him.''

For the record I HATE when people use the "black friend" excuse to justify anything they do or say that can be potentially taken the wrong way, or to qualify them to discuss potentially inflammatory racial issues. One black friend an understanding of what it means to be black does not make. On the other hand, I definitely admit that non-white people can get away with saying things that white people cannot, and I agree it's just as racist regardless of the color of the person saying it. I could go into the reasons why this is the case, but I'd have to write for like 5 pages and I don't really feel like it. It's not fair, but it's reality. If I go to buy a car, I'll likely end up with a higher interest rate because I'm black (don't argue, it's been studied and shown to often be the case), and that's not fair either, but it's reality. One doesn't excuse the other, of course; I'm just saying that we all have our crosses to bear.
As far as the Imus thing goes, I figure that it's his constitutional right to say whatever he wants, and it's my constitutional right not to listen to the crap he says if I find it offensive. Do I think that he's probably prejudiced against black people? Yeah, I do. But everyone's got prejudices. Do I think that this incident was probably a little blown out of proportion because it was a slow news day? Definitely. Do I think he should have been fired before/punished now? No, not really. It's a market driven society, and when there's no market for his brand of radio, he'll go off air. Until then, if he bothers someone, they can change the station. Anyway, just my $0.02.
