Tina,
Don't let it frustrate you, just as people's weight can go up and down so can inches.
Have you ever noticed that your body is always the slimmest when you first get up in the morning? But you could eat potato chips and get bloated and see an inch difference, it doesn't mean in the long run that you are bigger it just means at that moment. Water retention is everything.
You know in your heart that you are doing the right thing by working out and you know in the end it will pay off. Don't let these little setbacks get to you. The gym will pay off!
yes i suppose u r right, well i know so its just ive spent ages - since september- bringing it down and managed to do so. I havent seen thisinch diffreence in over 2 months. and yes i do measure obsessively, every morning and night
i feel lke giving up the gym...lol
im just going to have to wait till tommorow to see what happens
thank u
Saddle bags are on the thighs - the outer side of your thighs, that is, the upper leg that connects to your hips. Maybe you should know your own anatomy to make sure you're doing appropriate workouts.
also, you can't tone any one part of your body. If you have a fat problem, in order to get rid of that problem, fat burns ALL OVER the body, and not just in one area. No amount of lunges will make your thighs themselves less fat, just as no amoutn of crunches will make your stomach flatter. Weight loss is an all around thing, not a spot check thing.
also, the inch gain you say you have, maybe that's just muscle.
I have heard that sometimes our muscles will hold in water when doing weight training. Perhaps that is where you are seeing that extra inch. Just keep working the way you know is right and you will see a difference. I only like to measure myself once a month and sometimes less than that because it is hard to see a change. I like to see a lot of change rather than get discouraged if I don't see what I want. Just keep at it. I am sure it is nothing and will correct itselfs when given a little time.
1) Did you use a cloth tape measure, or a vinyl one? Cloth tape measures are notorious for stretching and being inaccurate. Always use vinyl instead.
2) How tight did you pull it? Perhaps you pulled tighter the first time?
3) Where did you measure your hips? It's actually kinda hard to measure the exact same place each time! You may have measured lower this time than last time.
4) Assuming you are measuring at the widest part, and not at the high hip bone (the top of the bone itself), you are always going to be catching a bit of butt muscle in that measurement. It is possible the exercise has not increased or decreased the fat on your hips, but HAS made your butt more... well, perky! Having a perky, muscular butt is very much desired!!
5) As noted, muscles hold water when weight training.
6) There's also the possibility that it's TTOM. Everyone's different - I have two whole weeks out of the month when my weight is a bit higher, and measurements a bit bigger. It's not always JUST during your period.
7) You may have food working it's way through your lower bowels and puffing you out a bit.
8) If you measured late in the day, your posture may be the culprit. Always measure first thing in the morning, when everyone is an inch taller, with straighter posture.
I've been on maintenance for several months now, and to give you an idea, depending on when I measure - what time of month, whether I've recently exercised, and what time of day - my hip measurement fluctuates between 31 inches and 32 inches. Whereas my waist is even worse... it can fluctuate as much as 3 inches, from 25 to 28 inches!
EDIT: Forgot one very important thing!!!! Make sure the tape measure is completely parallel to the ground. Hips are tough, because the butt muscle is included, and has a way of making the tape measure not want to go parallel.... so always measure while looking in a mirror, and check all the way around, front AND back... or better yet, get someone else to measure you... so you can stand up straight.
thank you guys
u r all so supportive - especially jen thanks so much
my saddlebags have been the root cause for a past ed and now its been 6 months since ive been having more than 500 cals a day if not less!!
i guess my body is still catching up but the wild fluctuations get my hopes high n then crash them again...lol! i am learning!
anyways thanks again, you guys r the best - lol...feeling emotional as i have first counsellor appointment on wednesday - feelin nervous and weird - arghh
take care
