I loved this article in the online New York Times, Nutrition & Fitness section

The 10 Ingredient Shopping List

The author tells you what basics you need to have on hand, then gives a shopping list for versitile ingredients and recipes for 5 meals made from those 10 ingredients and your staples.

It really inspired me to plan my weekly meals ahead.

I've found that the Kraft website has something like this. You can choose a week full of food and meals and they have the grocery list for you and it's all supposed to be able to go in one grocery bag. Yes, it's Kraft product heavy, but it works.

Awesome, thanks claireelaine!

Wow...that's such a great idea.  I'll be checking out the Kraft website too.

ETA: Just checked out the Kraft website and it's pretty dang cool too! A little heavy on the processed stuff, but the majority of their recipes were very basic and quick. AND there's even an option for a 'healthy' bag that you can choose.  Again, heavy on the Kraft products (obviously) and processed foods, but with a little creativity, you can replace most of the processed foods with homemade without changing the recipes or budget too much.

Unfortunately for me, I can't eat any of the Kraft products because they are so high in sodium.  I have too cook everything from scratch and eat mostly fresh foods.  I'd love that convenience, but I really pay a price if I don't keep my sodium low.
