Injured & overweight

Quote  |  Reply

I am grossly obese 335 IBS and fractured my right ankle playing basketball yesterday. I was wondering if there are any exercises I can do while I am not able to walk.

As far as calorie levels, what about should I be consuming? I have thought of eating about 1500 calories and limiting my fats <50 and carbs <200, but I am afraid of starvation mode. Thank you for the advise

If I were you, I'd meet with your general practitioner. They're not a nutritionist (who can afford one!?!) but they'll be able to give you some sound advice regarding your health.

I love your pictures.

Rock on.

i would probably stay within a 1500-1800 calorie range with lean proteins, healthy carbs.  i've been in a cast a couple of times, that's where light dumbells and boxing moves come in handy, sitting down ofcourse.

They have cardio machines at some gyms that you operate with your arms if you need to get your heart rate up and you have access to one. Definitely do upper body (and core?) strength training as you are able to help you retain as much muscle mass as possible, and eat 1000 calories below your sedentary maintenance calories. I can't guess how much that is because I don't know your height & age, but I can guess that 1500 is pretty darn low for a 335 lb man and I would guess 2000 is more appropriate. Use the calculators though.

Your eating habits are what is going to help you the most. Take your maintenace calories and subtract 500 and as long as it's still 1500 or above you will still be able to lose weight. You're injured so i wouldn't suggest anything lower body because you don't want to further irritate your injury or slow your healing process. Will you be scheduled for physical therapy?

there are many things you can due while not being able to walk or run....get one of those peddle machines that people use while sitting in their chair or on the couch( not sure what they are called, but its just the peddles very small) set it on you lap and use your arms to peddle, and you can also do the motion as if you were puncing a speed bag ( fists about forehead height and do quick circular motion)..now you can get just regular hand weights, you can do a crazy amount of upper body exercises....for your abs, while sitting just tighten up your ab muscles and hold for 5 counts and do multiple times and then when you hold you can crunch side to side...doesnt sound to intense but i smashed my foot about 8 years ago and was laid up for about 16 weeks and that is what i did and i got good results...good luck and i hope it works out for you!!!!

HOpe you feel better soon! I broke my foot a few years ago so I understand the pain!!!!!

YOu can do a lot of arm excercises & anything from a chair. Just think after 6/8 weeks you'll have rocking arms :)  Plus u'll burn a lot of calories with no impact.

Cardio will be the hardest part... but  do some non-jumping jacks in a chair so u get arms and legs moving;

Here is a routine you can try at home with some 5 lb weights all in a chair:

  • 10 chair non-jumping jacks (going fast, legs raised in front, arms over head like normal)
  • 10 shoulder presses
  • 10 bicep curls
  • 10 lateral arm raises
  • 10 leg lifts

try doing that two times then gradually inceasing until you get up to 5 times!

Just be really careful on your eating! throw up ALLLLLLL the junk food and load up on fruits and veggies... sitting on the couch can easily lead to binging on all th junk food in the house; even if u don't like it!

Thank you so much everyone! This was so much help. I already started implementing your ideas last Friday.
