I recently bought the quaker brand high fiber instant oatmeal, cinnamon swirl flavor (which is delicious, by the way!) but it has 7g sugar per packet (160 cals per packet) and I was just wondering if this was probably too much sugar to have with breakfast or not? Potentially a stupid question, but I'm just wondering. Thanks!

Most people downgrade Instant Oatmeal against real rolled oats because of the sugar. However, I believe there are a lot more awful choices you could make expecially in the cereal department. Instant oatmeal is convenient, healthy, great on a cold day and really yummy. I like to add some natural whole almonds to my oatmeal to add more of a nutritional punch. There is by no means anything wrong with it. :)

I agree with silentdeadlyrose. I was just at the grocery store today looking at a box of cereal(the kind you eat with milk) called oatmeal something-or-other and it sounded healthy but when i read the nutrition label it had 20g of sugar for its teeny serving.

Instead of the high fiber instant oatmeal, why not purchase the lower sugar or the weight control oatmeal which has a lot less sugar? i eat the weight control oatmeal every morning, i like it, it even has good fiber and protein content

7g of sugar is really not that bad at all, and if it's got a lot of fiber, then it's even better!

I've rarely found a dry cereal that has less sugar than that per serving, except for ones that use artificial sweeteners or plain cereals like shredded wheat.

Instant oatmeal's better than a lot of cereals (though it's not really fair to hold sugar content against the ones with dried fruit if most of their sugar's coming from the fruit and not added).

Do you cook yours in the microwave or just add boiling water?  Because regular oatmeal is just as easy to cook in the microwave.  If you were going to nuke it anyway, you could also mix the instant half-and-half with regular oats to keep the flavour but cut down on the sugar.  (That suggestion's mostly for anyone who finds the instant packs so small that they eat two; try one with extra oats instead.  If you get the "quick cooking" oats, they're cut smaller so will cook just as fast as the instant flakes.)

I mostly stick to regular oatmeal at home, but I do keep some packets of the instant stuff at work because I don't have access to a (clean) microwave there, so being able to make it up with just my kettle is handy.

I usually microwave it with water and then add some vanilla dannon yogurt to it, or a banana or something. This was the only one with high fiber, and I thought I'd try it. Regular oats are super good to microwaved! Do you know if its possible to microwave steel cut oatmeal also?

It really isn't bad. A tip I use to compare sugar v. fiber is the 5 more-5 less rule, the if what you are eating has 5 grams or more fiber and 5 grams or less sugar, then its rather ok because you are at least getting half of the total carbs are good ones and not bad ones.

But I actually bought the exact same brand you mentioned (cinnamon swirl flavor) and I have to say that it is quite delicious.
