an interesting problem
I'm a waitress/bartender. It's what I've done since I was 16 years old. I lost my job about two months ago and I'm going for my first interview today. I'm extraordinarily nervous, not because I doubt that I'm qualified, but because the restaurant that I'm applying to is very nice, kind of fancy, and all the girls that work there are slim and beautiful. Now I don't doubt my beauty, but I'm far from slim, and I'm extremely worried that I'm going to be discriminated against (ie not get the job) because I'm overweight. I know that all I can do is dress to impress, go in there, and be my charming self. But I needed to vocalize my concerns. Has anyone else been through this?
I have not been discriminated against because of weight, but I have because of being a woman in a “man’s world.” (computer engineering). They were rude to me at the interview but I still got the job and took it to prove them wrong, - and I did! It is all about your attitude. Have confidence or pretend you do. Dress and act the part. You have experience and skill (which they know from your resume). Now you need to prove you have the attitude and the confidence. You do need the “look” but that has to do with professionalism and cleanliness, not weight. Good Luck!!!!!!!!!
Oh, this is something I always think about when I go for job interviews, it really does make the nervousness so much worse!
I don't think that I've ever actually been discriminated against because of it.. maybe one time that I applied for a barmaid type position.. but you never know.
I've got a job interview tomorrow, and again this is weighing on my mind. I know that my weight has zilch to do with the position [it's a call centre] I still feel like employers would rather have thin people around *sigh*
Anyhow, chub2lose makes a good point.. good luck with the interview!
well, I went on the interview. i find out either tonight or tomorrow whether i got it or not. there's nothing i can do now. i just can't shake the feeling that if i don't get it, that will be why.
