Interesting side effect of weight loss...

Quote  |  Reply

Lately since fall has been turning into winter I have noticed an interesting side effect of my weight loss...

I'm a lot colder, a lot more often.

I mean, it makes sense since there are now 25 less pounds of fat insulating my body than last winter, but still it surprised me how noticeable it is. I've never been one of those people that got cold easily before, but now I am often cold at temperatures I used to feel fine at. I am going to have to do some serious winter clothes shopping!

Has anyone else noticed this?

I was 250 and could wear shorts and a tank top in the winter and BARELY be cold.

I'm 185 now and I have to wear long pants, knee socks, long shirt, tank top under it, scarf, and at LEAST one sweater/coat to feel even remotely warm.

So, yeah. COMPLETELY different.

Oh yes!! But check your iron levels I'm ALWAYS, ALWAYS cold and that was my problem not enough iron. So maybe that could be the reason you're cold all the time? Of course body fat has something to do with it too... Sorry I'm rambling.
i'm *always* cold... and this winter it's the worst! i've taken to going to the swimming pool and basking in the hottub to warm up. so actually it's a blessing in disguise! because i end up swimming a bunch of laps and getting more exercise just to be completely warm for a little while.
that's interesting. i noticed the exact same thing but thought it shouldn't have anything to do with it. i feel like i can't stand the cold now nearly as much as i could last year. but it was also like only 8 degrees F today lol
I'm always warm which is a sign of a fast metabolism so I'm happy,

I lost about 15 lbs nearly 3 years ago and I've been cold ever since!!!!

Right now I'm sitting in the office at work with arm warmers on and a heater at my feet whilst my colleagues walk around in summer dresses, singlets and short sleeves.

I've definitely read somewhere that losing weight has this affect and I guess from my situation - it takes a LONG time for your body to re-adjust! I just hope mine does soon cos I hate always having to wear 15 layers!!

Ha ha renee18, I'm sitting here too in a wool sweater with a heater at my feet! That's what made me think of writing this post, because I've never been like this before.

Glad to know I'm not the only one noticing the effects of less body fat!!!

It makes me secretly happy I am colder though (because it reminds me of the lesser amount of fat I am carrying around). I am recalling now all those thin people who were always complaining it was cold and I thought they were nuts. Now I know it's just because I was so well insulated!

I know what you mean... It's been many years since I lost the bulk of my weight and I am still cold most of the time.  Even in the summer, the air condition freezes me out!  I now have a t-shirt, a hoodie, and a coat on.  Plus I have a pair of the fleece winter boots and can wear them comfortably inside... people are always asking me aren't you hot in all those layers, then I put my cold hands on them and they are shocked!
I just read the post above about iron.  I never put two and two together... yes, I am anemic with low b12 and iron and I am always cold.  Interesting!
I moved to L.A. this year and didnt really notice untill I went home for Thanksgiving 70 lbs. lighter.. It was cold as hell up there. Especially cuz everyday this winter here its been 72 degrees or warmer during the day.. and never drops below 50 at night
I'm flippin' FREEZING.  Glad it's not just me!

This thread is awesome!

My wife started noticing it before me actually... I used to be able to wear shorts and tank top year round. I would sit on the couch wearing that while she is bundled up with a blanket too and I used to tease her. I told her and anyone who would listen it's because of my muscle mass and such, LOL. I was so delusional and in SOOO Much denial. lol

I freeze now just like she does... to put things in perspective. This very week actually I BOUGHT MY FIRST PAIR OF SWEATS IN 20 YEARS!!!! I can't belive it! LOL

i can relate because before i used to not wear so much clothes in the winter, now i wear layers upon layers.
My hands are still warm but my nose, shoulders and feet get colder than they used to. That 47 lbs was good insulation I guess. :)
I find that I'm always more cold on the days I don't exercise, if anyone wants to take that to heart.  :)
the reverse is true is well -- i'm much cooler in the summer.
My hands and feet are always FREEZING now that Ive lost a lot of weight. Even with socks on my toes are still ice cold! I wonder how I will feel after losing another 30? Strange!
Yeah, when I weighed about 15-20 pounds less I was freeeeezing all the time, winter or summer.  What's weird is that now I am at a higher weight I NEVER get cold, even in the winter.  It's kind of weird.

Yep.  Like you said.  We have less insulation now.  Wink

Funny.

That is so funny!

I've been finding it MUCH harder to tolerate the cold (25 lbs lighter than last winter), and I kept telling myself - if you'd work out more, lift more weights, your metabolism would spike and you'd be warmer!

So it really IS because of the weight-loss?

Dayummm.
