Just stop and think for two seconds... .... ....
You had fluid put inside of you. Fluid, like everything else, has mass. So you + fluid = extra mass.
And that fluid went through your blood stream - not your digestive system.
So no, you didn't gain fat. You can get rid of it by dehydrating yourself. Which, essentially, wouldn't be a smart move, considering it'd wind you back in the hospital hooked up to an IV again.
maybe you have bigger things going on that 2 pounds?
but 2 lbs... arent u supposed to lose weight after surgery? ive barely been able to eat..i cant see why id gain weight :(
The drip is equivalent to salt water - it's saline solution. Water does not cause weight gain. Since you just had surgery you might have fluid build up inside in response to the surgery which can cause some bloating. I think since you just underwent a procedure and being that you are already very slim you should focus on getting better before worrying about losing anymore weight.
Let your body recover, i'm sure its the swelling, however many people's weights will fluctuate over the course of the day and the week. mine bounces up and down between 2 lbs most of the time. Don't worry about it so much - you'll drive yourself insane. Focus on being healthy and drinking plenty of water and you'll get back to normal soon.
HAHA! I BEAT YOU! When I ws hooked up to an IV I gained 3 (and I wasn't allowed to eat anyhting becase of a test I was having done, so it certainly did not come from excess calories.)
So don't sweat it. It's not real weight. It's just the extra fuid. 1 water bottle (16 fl oz, or about 500ml) weighs one pound. An IV bag holds 1200ml. With a IV rate of 150/hr (which is pretty normal), over the coarse of 12 hours, you'd go through a bag and a half, which is almost 4 pounds of extra fluid.
how long did it take for urs to come off
Look your focus is really off. DON"T WORRY ABOUT THE WEIGHT. Water weight comes and goes. If I workout hard I lose 5 lbs in water weight. When I rehydrate I gain the weight back. If you had surgery and were on IV fluids then you shouldn't be worry about you weight gain. If you are not eating anything then I would be more worried about that. Have you ever read about the possiblity of muscle catabolism? When you do not eat you do not get your essential amino acids so your body takes them out of your muscles. I would focus on good nutrition and recovery. Your body needs more fuel after being sick or having had a surgery. Also here is some more food for thought. The fluids they gave you IV are to support blood pressure by keeping blood pressure in the correct range they are making sure that you kidneys are getting enough blood so that they function properly. The IV also helps to flush anesthetics out of the body. The IV fluids also help to serve to fully hydrate a patient. You body needs fluids to keep your metabolism running and the body healthy. When you under go surgery you lose fluid due to your metabolism, blood loss (depending on the type of surgery), and secondary to the dry oxygen gas that you breathe during surgery. How do I know this? I am a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery. Fluids are used for the same reason in our pets. The swelling at the surgical site is possibly partly fluid but mostly inflammation (which has a fluid component.) The fluids you were given do not determine the swelling at the surgical site. So relax recover and don't worry about the fluid weight. It really should be gone by now anyway. You are probably just well hydrated.
Thanks for asking your question because this discussion is helping me from getting frustrated by my scale saying I gains 1/2 lb after being on an IV for 24 hours (until yesterday morning) and eating very little in a 48 hr period. To top it off I've had been hospitalized twice in the same week. I had a heart attack last Sat morning while in the emergency room for severe heartburn (no damage as a result). Wound up with a stent. Was on IV until Sunday afternoon, about 36 hours. Didn't come home until Tuesday because the Dr was adjusting my BP drugs. Was readmitted Fri morning and balloon angioplasty was performed to open up a secondary artery that was causing chest pain. I was down on Wed, no change Thur & Fri, and am now up 1/2 Sun morning. Frustrating but explainable thanks to this thread. Being hospitalized and on IV's screws up one's system big time. I hope it corrects itself quickly, like in a day or two so I can get back to normal.
