Calorie Count Blog

An Introduction

By +Mary Hartley on Feb 12, 2009 12:39 PM in Dieting & You

Igor calls my blog “Dieting and You” but I call it “Musings of a Lifelong Nutritionist.”  Really, I’ve seen it all.  Calorie Counters may know me from my column, Ask Mary.  You can read about my credentials on my Account Page.  I am honored to serve as “Your Personal Nutritionist.”

Why Blog?

Calorie Count’s mission is to help people manage their weight.   We help you to help yourself.  We hope give you the knowledge and skills to develop good habits that will last a lifetime aa well as sane notions about food.  The key phrase is “manage your weight”, whether you are overweight, underweight or somewhere in-between.  Remember, our bodies and minds are hardwired for scarcity, not abundance, hence the foolishness.  I could go on and on….

What to Write About?

To be true to myself, I have to focus on the basics of healthy eating.  What to eat.  How to get it.  The choice is up to you.  Your job is to be informed and know how to make it (relatively) easy.

Many people are confused and that needs to be cleared up.  Others are soundly on track and that should be validated.  I will pick up on the issues I see in the “Ask Mary” posts, and in the Calorie Count forums and groups.  Your comments, in turn, will give rise to new blogs, and round and round we go. And then there’s the news of the day and who knows what else.  (Did I tell you that I loathe the Biggest Loser?)

And that's what it's all about.

i also loathe The Biggest Loser mainly because it sets unrealistic expectations for people trying to lose weight and because the contestants probably need to get some intensive counseling to go along with their regimen if they're going to change their lifestyle

I don't care for any of those "weight loss" shows. What have they learned? I also don't think their weigh ins are such a surprise to them. Would you weigh in fully clothed, wearing 10 lbs of jewelry and leather jackets on TV? Not me.

There is a show called Xweighted which is much better. Each episode is dedicated to one person's weight loss journey over 6 months. It provides a realistic account of people being successful (and some not so successful) in losing weight. The weight loss amounts are not as big as Biggest Loser but it is about real people trying to lose weight in real life. I agree with others that Biggest Loser creates unrealistic expectations. I do believe that most people's weight problem is the sign of a underlying problem. It definitely was for me. Being able to address the route cause makes maintenance possible.

I don't loathe the biggest loser but I think they are taking the body to extremes in such a short amount of time they are setting themselves up later for disappointment and possibly gaining it back. One that I really enjoyed was Ruby from Georgia. I don't know why they took that off the air but would really like to see her back. She was a bit annoying sometimes with her whiney tone but I love how she's so determined to lose weight and watching her struggles because I can relate being extremely obese.

Thanks Mary for all your care and posts and information.

meh, CCclassic was STILL better, but beggers can't be choosers though, right?

Calorie Count?s mission is to help people manage their weight...We hope give you the knowledge and skills to develop good habits that will last a lifetime...

i don't see anything about doin' it the 'healthy' way. it does say that they HOPE you have the KNOWLEGDE/SKILLS of 'good' habbits, but what one person 'thinks' are good habbits differ from person to person. AND most of the ads here on the 'new' CCplus are ridiculous!!

"click here to lose 20lbs in 3 days"

yeah right! gimmie a break!!

^^^ ummmmm....

half my post is missing!!

oh well..

i enjoy watching the biggest loser, because it shows us that it can be done. the problem is that it can be done at home, and i wish more people would understand that.

can't overweight people see from watching this show that it really IS possible to lose, AND that you don't need to be on the show to lose?

you don't even need to workout like they do. LOL that is just ridiculous! killing yourself to lose... i guess it's all for money, though, AND there are 2 winners. one from the show & one from the losers that were sent home.

get it? :D losers...

Well One of the current biggest losers is a customers neighbour and she said they exercise 10 hrs a dy to get the weight off. I dont hate the show but those people will find it very hard to maintain when they come out if htey have jobs kids e.t.c who has time to exercise 10 hrs a day . think the only inspiration I derive from the show is that if you put your mind to it you can lose weight and be healthy .

I too enjoy watching the biggest looser and Diet tribe. I mean common they are there 24x7 working out and dieting. Is that realistic maybe not but you know these people are grossly overweight. I like Diet tribe so much better because the people doing the show are regular people working and loosing weight. I still get inspired seeing the people at the weigh ins. Take it for what it is worth and take away from it what you can. That is life my friends. I started a beach body workout program 90 days ago and have lost 30 pounds in 90 days. Not hard to do because I was 80 pounds overweight. But I am excited about what the next 90 days will bring.

Just my 2 cents,

Skrog

I like watching the biggest loser however I know that the show is not realistically applicable to real life - look at those previous contestants even previous winners - they end up gaining their weight back because once they get home, it's a different game to play - having a full time job, a family to take care of with children and household to manage? I don't buy it also when previous contestants would say that they exercise 3-4 hours a day. Who has time for 1 hour day? We hardly squeeze in everything in our so little 24 hrs/day that 1 hour is probably the most I could give to my workouts on weekdays. Very few managed to maintain their weight loss - I even heard that before the finale, the contestants are pretty much starving themselves so they'll weigh less in the final weigh in.

I watch the biggest loser every week.  It is true that the weight loss people on the show is accomplished in a very short time, and a number of them put weight back on once the show is over.  But they are given the tools to change their life.  It is up to them to use them or not.  Even if they exercised for 1 hr every day they should be able to keep the weight off when they get home.   They don't need to exercise more than that because they already reached their goals... so they are only maintaining.. but if they don't exercise then the weight piles back on... The show gives a little bit of hope to people who are overweight.  Hope that they too can somehow start to change their life... Like Skrog said, take away whatever you can inorder to help you reach your goal..

Cheers

Forget loathing the Biggest Loser, I loathe the ads on this site for quick, unrealistic, weight loss (see below) "I lost 42 pounds (in 3 months without dieting)" - it's wrong in many ways, and on many levels, but I guess that's the price I have to pay to use the free calorie counting service - which I find pretty useful.  Too bad CC can't get sponsors who promote eating morel fruits and vegetables and less packaged foods - the real "secrets" to weight loss.

The ads aren't realistic but we all know that because most of us have tried enough to know. That's why I joined calorie counter because while all calories aren't egual a calorie does count. This is my first day on calorie counter but I am 45 year dieter. I started dieting at 17. The one thing I know for sure this is a forever journey of caring enough about me to continue to watch what I eat and exercise because I enjoy being fit and healthy even at 62. I think we are extremely blessed to have so many free tools available to help us continue our journey of health and fitness.
