40ish and Losing It!

Quote  |  Reply

This is a daily thread for women 40+ who are: losing those middle aged pounds, dealing with hormonal issues, family issues or just plain losing their minds!  I hope my friends follow me to this new thread and I hope to make more friends along the way - all are welcome.

I'll start with you digi...

Okay, here it is, Friday morning!  Time for our first weigh-in.  Here's my numbers for the week:

Starting weight:   170
Goal weight:      &n bsp; 120
Current weight:   142.5
This week's loss:  2 lbs (but last week was 0, so really that's two weeks worth)

Calorie goals:  Stayed at my personal goal of about 1500-1550 for 5; the other two days I was still below maintenance numbers, but higher than my goal.

Water goals:  I don't really have a water goal.  Experts are now saying that the "8 glasses a day" thing has been determined to be a myth.  They say that basically you can let your thirst guide you, so that's what I do.  That said, I do drink quite a bit of water every day - I just don't count.

Exercise goals:  My current goal is to do cardio 4 days a week and strength training twice a week.  This week, I did hit the cardio goal - did it every day Monday thru Thursday.  I only did light strength training once though, partially because I'm still waiting to hear from the Doc re: the possible arthritis thing and I waffle back and forth as to whether I should be doing the strength training until that is figured out.

Overall a pretty good week.

Valerie

Valerie and everyone,

Here's my numbers for the week:

Starting weight:   157
Goal weight:     115- 120
Current weight:   140.8
This week's loss:  Well I must have been retaining water because yesterday I was 142+ and I had been down to 139 so let's look at next week's weigh-in for real results. Hopefully a loss!

Calorie goals:  Stayed at my personal goal of about 1400 yesterday but haven't been counting since last week. Just started again yesterday.

Water goals:  I love what you shared here Valerie concerning water intake however, I know for me, the weeks I drink my 48-64 oz of water a day are the weeks I loose. Maybe it's just overall better discipline or focus but whatever  it is results are results. So yes, I did drink my water yesterday.

Exercise goals:  My current goal is to move and burn approximately 200-300 calories according to cc activity values for caloric burn 5 out of 7 days. I exercised Sat., Sun, Tues., wed., Thurs. and Friday. so I feel really good about that.

Good job Valerie! Feel free to join in ladies.

Wow, home4ed, we are really close together in terms of our current weight and our goal weight.  Only a couple of pounds apart!  How tall are you?  I'm 5'2".  I've set my goal at 120, but I know it may move once I get down there and decide what's really the right weight for me.  Could go up OR down.

I definitely agree that drinking water is a good thing - I think it helps prevent retention because it keeps the flow going, and it keeps you from splurging on other junk.  But I was having trouble with the 8 glasses a day thing, so when I started researching it and seeing that that is outdated info, I decided to just be more general about it.  I'm pretty good during the week - I drink many cups of water at work - but on the weekends, not as good.  Have to work on that.

Great job on the working out!  I had a good week this week, but working out often consistently is hard for me.  Cardio is what helps my blood pressure, but of course it's what I dislike. So I'm trying to just make it into a habit, like brushing my teeth every day.  You are an inspiration!  6 out of 7 days!  You go girl!

Hey ladies, been reading through some of your posts.  I am 45 and hoping to lose 75 lbs.  Really struggling!  Found this site May 23 and have been logging my food and exercise.  I have been going between 202 and 206.  It doesn't want to stay off.  So I started taking all my stats and spread sheeting them to see if I could find out just what is going on.  I could really use some support and accountablity was wondering if I could join in.  I am a stay at home mom.  My kids are mostly grown now.  My first son is 21 and living with us right now only not for long as he hopes to soon get married,  my daughter is 19 and at school in TX, my youngest son is 15.  I homeschooled for 9 years and saw the first two graduate.  Now the youngest is in christian school.  I can't believe how much weight I've gained.  I've always been on the heavy end of my weight charts.  I remember struggling when I went into the A.F. at 18 because I was within 2 lbs of the weight standard.  When I got pregnant with my first child I gained 65 lbs but was able to take all but 15lbs off in 9 months before I got pregnant again.  I tipped the scales at 176 lbs by the time I had my daughter.  Unbelievable since she was only 4 lbs 8 oz and 7weeks early!  I lost it this time in twice the time.  I actually got down to 127 lbs - my all time lowest weight.  With my third I was only 187 and I began losing after I had him but then I stalled out at around 165 lbs when he was 8 months.  We had move to the norhtern midwest for Tucson AZ and my body thought it I needed the extra fat or something.  Don't even ask me how I got to 200 something I can't tell you!  Anyway,  hope I can join in and weigh in with you all.

Welcome pjlittlefr!  There's always room for one more.

We all certainly understand the struggles and the yo-yo-ing.  Been there, done that.  CC is a great site for helping get control of it.  Good luck!
I want to welcome you too pjlittle! You've been on for two weeks and just taking the time to discipline yourselfthis way is going to help get you where you want to go. This site has been a great help for me and so has this group. In two months of consistant exercise and controlling your calories you WILL see a loss. Just keep it up.  We just started posting a weekly weigh in for accountability so I hope you feel comfortable doing that because it really is encouraging to have that. I have "toyed" with this site for a couple of years but haven't really been consistant until this past spring so sometimes it takes a few tries to really get committed.

Welcome!

Brigitte

I would like to give a plug for something else that is really going to see me through in KEEPING the weight off and maybe it will help you:

Hello girls, this seems like the place for me. pjlittle, reading your post was like a mirror-image! How does this happen? Well, we know that pregnancy, hormones and pigging out.... :) I gained 65 lbs with my last child and have lost and re-gained those same lbs over and over again. She is now 16 and it's time to bury the excuse. It is amazing though, I get right back to the same size so easily and it seems to happen overnight. I have been "toying" with this site since Feb. and have lost less than 10 lbs and find that unacceptable. I need to be accountable somewhere. What days are the weekly weigh-ins? Oh-boy.....

welcome khp169!

We are glad you found us! We weigh in on friday. Gotta go - havea great day.

brigitte

Brigitte,

what is that link to ?  I went there and you had to log in and all, so I was wondering what it was b4 I register and all that.

As for weight loss - Okay, I give up on the Schwarzbien Principle - I just lost about 2 pounds and then stopped.  So, I will be cc again - which I really hate, but I guess for me it's necessary.

Okay, I WILL be accountable:

Starting weight:   151.2 (I'm 5'2")
Goal weight:     130

Current weight:   148

This week's loss:  NONE (just starting cc...again!)

Calorie goals:  1500

Water goals:  I agree with y'all about the water thing!

Exercise goals:  At least 20 minutes everyday - either swimming, walking or dancing.

WISH ME LUCK!!!!

Cheryl :)

Hi Cheryl and everyone

That is a link to a 60 day bible study course called "The Lord's Table". Well there are several and that is one of them. On the page the link takes you to there is a yellow bar at the top with different tabs. Go to "online courses" then on the drop down tab go to "The Lord's Table- Phase I". This is a course that has helped me learn a perspective on eating that I think in our instant gratification culture and comfort culture you would be hard pressed to find else where. The study is totally free on line although you can purchase a book. I am on day 46 of 60. CC has definitely helped me lose weight but I think The Lords Table teaching will really help me to keep it off. Any how if you want to email me privately with other questions I would welcome that.

Hope you all are having a great week.

brigitte

Hi guys,

Welcome pjlittle and khp169.

I haven't been doing so well on my weight so feel I should get a bit more motivated, too. I started at 148 in Jan. I had got down to 131 by early May but am now at 133.6 today.  My goal was to be 125 by July 1...no way will I reach it. I will be happy getting to the 131 by July 1. But, I really need to start exercising again. I just don't have the ambition now that I am working 8-10 hrs. daily (and most of that time is spent on my feet). That's only for the next 7 months then it's sooooo slow for about 3, so I don't usually complain. In addition to work, hubby and I have an agreement that I do the summer yard maintanance (mowing, weeding, pond) and he does the winter work (plowing, etc), so I try to justify the yard work as my "exercise"(we have 6 acres). But I know I need to get back on the treadmill or walk outside(since that's good for osteo/bones), riding on a mower listening to music just doesn't count as exercise.

Cheryl, I had to laugh when you asked about the steroid injections disolving fat. I thought that they were kidding when they first told me what it was. My massage therapist thought I had a torn muscle. I "googled" fat atrophy and found several sites. I even found a picture of what mine looked like. The woman had injections to "fix" hers (she was a lot younger than me) but I just waited it out and within a year it filled in most of the way. It's hardly noticeable now, unless you are looking for it (and who sees my bare butt anyway???). here's the link to the pic. it's about the 4th one down on the page...the first set of photos that are of buttocks(not faces). http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.parkercenter.net/before_and_after_picture s/fat_injection_01a_small.jpg&imgrefurl=h ttp://##texthol der2##:&tbnh=42&tbnw=111&prev=/im ages%3Fq%3Dfat%2Batrophy%2Bfrom%2Bsteroid%2Bi njections%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN  It's too bad it looks so "scar-like" it'd be an easy way to lose this weight!

Good luck everyone for the weekend. Stay away from ice cream...it's the devil! (I'm sure my gain is the fault of Ben and Jerrys)

Edie

It's friday so here i go again:

starting weight:   157
Goal weight:     115- 120
last week weight:   140.8

today:143.2! how?

This week's loss:  Ok so now I am up 3 more pounds! This is not good. I'm not sure what happened this week but obviousely I need to be more disciplined. I know Im exercising so it must  be what is going into my mouth. No more wine for a while!
Calorie goals:  not really sure didn't have time to count.
Water goals:  most days I reached this I think but wasn't really counting.

Exercise goals:  This I know I reached because Im doing my son's paper route and riding my bike when ever I can like going for errands. Gas is just too much!

I am really dissappointed in myself this week. Im  going to work really hard at the discipline this week and be on guard to those situations that I tend to stumble in. Edie, I will take your advice and stay away from the ice cream. No strawberry shortcake for me tonight either!

Have a great week everyone!
Hang in there home4ed!  Sometimes it seems like our bodies just aren't cooperating, doesn't it?  But usually I find that after I've had a disappointing week or two, the next week after that is a really good one.  Just get right back on the horse and you'll be back on track.  Just cutting down on wine might help a lot - those calories can add up quick.

Here's my report for this week:

Starting weight:   170
Goal weight:      &n bsp; 120
Current weight:   142
This week's loss:  .5 lbs

Calorie goals:  This week I was under my calorie goals about half the days and over about half the week (although still below maintenance).  As you can see, I only lost .5 pounds, so obviously those "over" days added up.

Water goals:  Same as last week.

Exercise goals:  My current goal is to do cardio 4 days a week and strength training twice a week.  I did do some weights one day this week despite still not hearing from the doctor about the possible arthritis.  Only did cardio twice though.  The weirdest thing is that consistently since I started dieting, I lose the least weight on the weeks I work out the most.  And sure enough, the past week was no exception.  So on Wednesday and Thursday of this week, I was feeling tired and cranky (TOM), so I skipped out.  I know I should exercise anyway, but just wasn't motivated.

Not a great week, but any loss is a good thing.  Keeping on!

Valerie

friday again- 6/20/08

starting weight:   157
Goal weight:     115- 120
last week weight:  143.2!
today: 141(back down)

This week's loss:  glad to be going in the right direction again. I was not very disciplined in my eating or counting but rocked on work outs. Started running with a friend 2 days a week and riding the other ones.

Calorie goals:  not really sure didn't have time to count.
Water goals:  most days I reached this I think but wasn't really counting.

Exercise goals:  running and riding my bike when ever I can like going for errands. Gas is just too much!

Hope to loose another 1-2 this week! Looking forward to seeing how the rest of you are doing

brigitte

Congrats home4ed!  Great work!  You're an inspiration.

I almost forgot!  Good thing I saw your post!

Starting weight:         170
Goal weight:      &n bsp;        ; 120
Current weight:      &n bsp;   143
This week's change:    +1  what!?

Very disappointing.  The scale says I gained a pound.  How is that possible?  My calories were well within my deficit goals.  It IS the TOM, but I haven't had gains during that time in the past.  In fact, so far, TOMs have been my best losing weeks.  Have I hit the dreaded plateau?

The numbers, though, look pretty good.  I got the sodium down, the saturated fat down, even the sugar down a little.  Unfortunately, the fiber's down a little too.  Hmm.

Very discouraging.

Exercise goals - only worked out a couple of times.  It's always especially hard during my TOM.  I know I should work out anyway, but I talked myself out of it several days this past week.  With my sudden GAIN (ugh), I plan to change up my workout routine anyway.  Instead of doing cardio every day, I'm going to alternate cardio one day, strength training the next.  Maybe adding some muscle will increase the metabolism and kick in some more weight loss.  Keeping fingers crossed!

Ugh! Friday already???  Brig, you did great! Digi, I know how disappointing that gain can be. I'm betting it's just the TOM. I don't have that excuse anymore but I can remember those days! Okay, here's my numbers:

Starting weight: 148

Goal weight: 125

Current weight: 133.6

Change: none

The numbers show no change, but I was out of town at a show last weekend and on Monday morning I weighed in at 138! I don't understand how I can gain so much weight in a weekend but it happens whenever I do the shows. I really think it is lack of fluids and baking in the sun. I take water but it seems that I am no replacing as much as I am losing. Does that make any sense? Does anyone else have any ideas on this? I drank a lot of water on Monday-Wed. and by Thursday morning I was down 4 lbs.  I am home this weekend but leave again on Thursday for another. I'd like to avoid the 4-5 lb. gain if I can.

Thanks for any input,

Edie

Ok. It's January 09 and I haven't been on cc since Oct. but didn't post on this thread at all. If any of you ladies are out there that were on this thread before I would love to hear from you. Newbies are welcome too.

Well, over the summer things got busy and just didn't stop once the school year began but now that Im back up 11lbs I need to get serious again so I'm back. I welcome any support.

Hi Brig,

I saw your poat in January but had a few vacations and realized that it was futile to attempt to watch weight until I was back home. here I am...Had got down to 134 but now am back up to 140. I really don't belong in the "40ish" group anymore, as I turned 50 last July. Hopefully I can stay as a 40ish at heart?

I'd love to get back into CC.  really could use the help of some motivational buds. Anyone still around?

Edie

Im still here eddie! Would love to start a weekly weigh in again if you're up to it!
