I've eaten my last Brussel sprout.

Quote  |  Reply

Short story: today I bought a large bag of brussel sprouts, brought them home, sliced the ends off, washed them, then tossed them in the steamer. I cooked them to perfection, and served them to my family. I took a bite, not really thinking about it, chewed and swallowed, then looked down at my sprout to find it crawling with caterpillars.

I don't want to think about how many were in the part I ate, but there were three steamed caterpillars in the other half. The rest of the sprouts were infested too. If there'd been just one caterpillar I'd have eaten the others with caution, but I don't think there was a clean sprout in the entire batch.

Uhhh, yeah. I'd rather get my protein in other ways, thanks. Check your brussel sprouts, people!

Ah! Traumatic. I had a similar experience with clementines years ago.  Opened one up only to find a gigantic clump of live worms...to this day I wont eat one. I know its kind of silly, but I just can't bring myself to eat one.

eeeeeeew!  That's gross.  Thank heavens I always slice my brussels in half before I cook them!  I've never found a worm but i've seen a few small worm holes before.
at least it was brussels sprouts and not something good!  i swore off them years ago, and i didn't need worms to do it.  blech!
I KNEW there was a reason I don't eat brussel sprouts! :-)
Were they frozen or fresh?

ewwww horribleee!!!

I have never tried a brussel sprout in my life actually! Are they good? What are they comparable to? Is there a bitter taste

They were fresh. From Fred Meyer grocery.

I think they're good tasting. They're one of those vegetables like carrots and cabbage that have a bit of a sweet taste to them.

That is so gross about the tangerine.

yeah it was. but atleast I didn't take a bite before noticing.

well, i guess it could be worse--at least you weren't a boiled caterpillar Surprised

Ew, I"m gonna have nightmares about brussel sprouts and clementines forevermore.

I read early a thread where someone was convinced as a child brussel sprouts were turtle heads but this one tops that.

At least if they were turtle heads I'd know what animal I'm eating. Seriously. Given a choice between turtle head and caterpillar habitat, I'd choose the former.

Oh no, did you manage to log the catterpillas?

Sorry i know its not funny, i would be disturbed if it was me!

I hope your not vegetarian :)

xXx

oh yuck!

I remember when I was younger my sisters and I bought some candied apples from the local shop, my youngest sister took a bite to find a worm in the middle of the apple!!

and as if that wasnt bad enough, my other sister took a bite to find HALF a worm in her apple!! (they both took a bite at the same time) The candy had covered up the holes so we didn't notice they had crawled into them. eugh!!

Luckily for me.. they both took a bite before me and I just binned mine!

*shudders* ew ew ew.

Gross, but caterpillars don't eat food which is full of chemicals and pesticides. This brussel sprout must have been healthy ;p.

Brrrrr. I have three tag end sprouts that have been silently imploring me from the fridge. Not anymore! ;)

EH!!!!!!!!!!! Thank goodness I did not pick up brussels sprouts today at the supermarket - I was THIS CLOSE too... ha ha! That sounds NASTY! The only time I really have brussels sprouts is when Whole Food professionally makes them which means all bugs are cleaned off & discarded!

**Well you won't die if you ate one... just think: Extra Protein! ha ha!

That convinces me to never buy fresh brussel sprouts then. I have been eating frozen brussel sprouts and fresh all my life, but now I'm certain to stick with frozen brussel sprouts. I just cooked some the day before yesterday. I always put a spicy vinegar on my brussel sprouts so I cut them in half before I eat them. Maybe that could be something you could do. Frozen ones taste the same, but are just smaller and I have never had an incidence like that.

the problem i find with brussel sprouts is that when you boil them, the water kinda gets trapped in them and when you take a bite water drips out and scalds your tongue, OUCH MUCH?

but the catterpillar thing is just gross. when i was in grade 9 i bought an orange slush puppie from a local convenient store and there was some kind of bug in it (not even sure what type of bug) but i've never had any kind of store-bought slushie since.

When I was a kid I ate a stink bug in a blue slush puppy ... one of the most vivid experiences of my childhood .... tasted unbelievably bad :)

I had the same experience with a cherry.  I bit a cherry in half only to find the other half full of wiggling white worms.  I get the creepy crawlys just writing about it.

I am only now (10+ years later) starting to eat cherries again.  And I check them VERY carefully now.
