Say you worked at a place where fighting was hands down grounds for termination.  Meaning if you even swing back, you're both gone.

Now say one of the best co-workers you've got, the one you'd trust with your job and hell, probably even your life, got into an altercation with another employee while you were present.

You can either A, knowing neither one of the two people or more in the altercation were wanting to report this fist fight, sit back, shut up, and never say a word about it or B, when Boss finally figures it out, spill the beans and cost both employees their jobs.

What to do?  Save two workers, one you really don't think the department can handle being without or take a hit with your trustworthiness?

Not that this really happened or anything..

who knows you were a witness?

and incidentally, why are your coworkers throwing punches?  i'm sorry, bud, but that's crazy.

what're you talking about, my coworkers don't fivht.

i thought of a better answer anyway.

how 'bout you go to one or both of them and say, like, listen, this is going to get back to management, and i'm not willing to risk my job.  if you report it yourself, take responsibility, and apologize, hopefully you'll just be censured rather than fired.  if you don't want to do that, that's fine, but i'll be going to the supervisor on friday.

give them the opportunity to make it right, but take care of yourself too.

i wouldn't say anything, but then again...my morals can be questionable at times.

Did I metnion at this place of employment, evne if you saw anything, so long as you didn't hit anyone yourself, they can't do **** to you?

Unions.  Love em, but hate em.

I'm going to sit back and twiddle my thumbs.  Er, I would, anyway.  'Cause in my little dream, this one coworker called me and yelled at me for something or other, probably because I said if you push someone,. you're laying your hands on them first and that's technically hitting.

huh.

honestly, if i had coworkers who were pushing each other around, i'd be happy to get rid of 'em.

Bluntly, and sorry if yous gys ever stumble on this and read it IM DRUNK AND WILL DENIY THIS LATER, one sucks and one is an awesome worker.  i don't mind seeing one go, but the other, i dread the day she quits or like, croaks.

AND NO AWESOME ONE I AM NOT A SECRET LESBIAN LOVER OR LAL UP YOUR ASS.  youre just a great worker andthats what i strive to be, without all of the bluntness you posessesssesssess.

you don't strive to emulate my bluntness?  i'm disappointed.

I only stand up for myseld anf am rude/blunt when necessary, otherwise i dont try to hurt peoples feelings. :(

OH HEY it typed out the bag iss long story to you, but didnt put a subject and CC got angry, so you just get to ponder my babblings with no verification.

not that anythinhg happened or anything

are you banging the keyboard with your forehead again?

cd--

i wont tell you how many times it took me to type that.

dont say anything.  not your duty to report (from what you said).  so therefore: if asked be honest, if not asked, keep quiet.

nothing wrong with camaraderie.

CD - I think I remember you being a phlebotomist...?

Which means there was a phlemotomy lab fist fight? Thats funny.

I guess if no one noticed - let it go.

I'll have you know, PG, I'm sober and am at work now. :D  See?  My typing is all legible and shizz.

And no, there was no phlebotomy lab fist fight.  It was all purely hypothetical.

Purely hypothetical...never let your trustworthiness come into question.  That being said, in the real world...who knows what you would have done.

Honestly, I wouldn't get involved.

Is it your responsibility, as an employee, to let your boss know if someone fights? Or is it just your responsibility to not fight?

If it's the latter, then I wouldn't snitch. Just stay out of it. If your boss finds out, your boss finds out and you stayed out of it. If your boss doesn't find out, than he or she doesn't.

But if you involve yourself, you'll be known as the Snitch among friends of the fired coworkers (some of whom will be your coworkers) and this won't help your ability to get along with them.

Or to your boss. It doesn't necessarily make you more trustworthy in your boss's eyes to tell.

i wouldn't say anything

"snitch" status aside, i wouldn't feel good about working with people who had demonstrated the capacity to get physical toward each other.  i guess if i worked in a parts warehouse or something i wouldn't be too concerned, but in a service industry?

surely in a phlebotomy lab the clientele is at least as provocative as the staff, you know?
