I've been very hungry recently....
As the title says, I've become increasingly hungry recently. I am a vegetarian, so I know that plays part. I don't know if I am bored-eating or not, but I don't think I am since I stop and think about it before I eat. I am fairly muscular for a 15 year old teenage girl, and I've been training for a mini triathlon. I way about 128-130 lbs and I am 5"5ish. I eat around 2000 and up calories a day. I am wondering what the max amount of calories that I should consume is. The thing is- I am still very hungry on days that I do not exercise. I eat the following-
Peanut butter, cereals, protein shakes, nuts, plenty of vegetables and fruits, soy milk, granola, eggs, tofu, beans, whole grain crackers, breads, rices etc. I will eat fish on the days it is available, but that is only a few days out of the month.
I don't know if I am going through a growth spurt, or if it is the increase in exercise. But like I said, I'm still very hungry when I am not exercising. I know as a teen I am growing, but I feel as if on days I am active I am hitting the 3000 calorie mark. :\
Just because you're a veggie doesn't mean you're always hungry! I've been a veggie for like 5 years and i'm rarely hungry! If you're eating the right things (which you are), drinking enough water and getting all you're vitamins and you're still hungry then eat! You're a very active teen, when i was 15 i needed to eat 2500 calories just to maintain my weight! Try upping your calories for a while and see how you feel, your training will most probably improve too.
Just another thought, are you getting enough protein? You're building muscle so you need lots of it!
I guess that's just a thing meat eaters tell me to trick me XD
I drink about 8 glasses of water or more a day, as awful as it is. I was thinking of flavoring it with some lemon. I'll try upping my calories. I found that when I ate below 2000 and went running, that my performance was not as good as it should be. I would stumble and sway a lot.
I believe I am- I take protein supplements and consume protein rich food. That was also an issue for a while.
Anyway, thank you for your response and advice. :)
it would not shock me at all if you needed more like 3000 calories a day to maintain, if you are training for a mini triathlon your activity level is most likely high active, so with your stats you are burning about 3030 calories...which was calculated at this site
http://www.bcm.edu/cnrc/bodycomp/bmiz2.html
which is much more accurate for teens and younger individuals. Even with no activity you burn about 1830 calories, so 2000 is definitely not enough for you. Don't worry about being constantly hungry, it's probably just a sign that you should eat more. As you said, your performance wasn't as good when you were eating less so try eating 2500 at least each day and see what happens, if you are still hungry just eat more. Trust your body to tell you when it's malnourished and in need of more calories and I doubt that it will steer you wrong.
Try eating a variety of whole grains and healthy fats as well. Fats keep up satiated. So increase your intake of nut butters, olives, olive oil, canola oil, and avocados.
YAY!!! TRIATHLONS!
Just curious- what distance are you doing? What are your swim/bike/run times?
^^ Thank you, Chrissy. :) I really do love avocados.
^Teehee. x) Welll, this is my first. It is a mini, so it's not like Ironman, though I dream to be able to compete in it one day. The distances are 350 meters of swimming, 5 miles of biking and 2 miles of running. I'm really excited. It's two weeks from now.
That's not bad!!! Good start!!
I finally get to try an Olympic distance soon!!! My parents are finally letting me do one! Technically, my training is high enough for me to complete a half-iron on a relatively-flat course, but I'm just now attempting an olympic!
What's your training like? I usually go 13-15hours a week.... though 8-10 hours tend to be of swimming XD.
Thank you!
That's so awesome! Good luck. You must be really strong.
I do anywhere from 9-15 hours, depending on how I feel. I've been having stomach issues lately, so I've been cutting back. D: I still try to maintain a certain amount. Me too! :) I love swimming. It's so hot here in Texas, so swimming is the best bet. It's so fun, too. I need to practice more in the swimming field. I've never really been a lap swimmer, but it's becoming habitual. I'm working on freestyle. The breathing always gets me. I'm used to running, so it was a step for me at first.
Is jump roping as good an exercise as running?
In terms of calorie burning, moderate jumping is about equal to running a 10-minute mile, although calorie burning is always a function of time... Read more
