Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution

By +Mary Hartley on Mar 16, 2010 12:00 PM in Tips & Updates

Jamie Oliver is on a roll.  You might know Jamie as “The Naked Chef”, television chef and cookbooks author from the UK, which is actually a gross understatement because, according to The New York Times, Jamie is “head of a multinational corporation that has produced 12 television series and associated specials seen in 130 countries, has written 10 cookbooks translated into 29 languages - besides owning restaurants, selling his own kitchenware, and publishing a magazine.”

But wait, there's more!

Jamie got the UK government to allocate $1 billion to reform school lunches after he revealed their unhealthiness on TV in “Jamie’s School Dinners” and by starting a petition drive called “Feed Me Better.”  He also created the Fifteen Foundation, a program to help disadvantaged young adults attain careers in the restaurant business, which he also turned into a successful TV series called “Jamie’s Kitchen.”  In still another series, “Jamie’s Ministry of Food,” he taught the residents of an industrial town in Britain how to cook inexpensive, healthy meals.  In addition, he received the 2010 TED Award (Technology-Entertainment-Design) to support “One Wish to Change the World.”  Jamie’s wish: “...to create a strong, sustainable movement to educate every child about food, inspire families to cook again and empower people everywhere to fight obesity."

Step up to the plate, USA

Now it’s our turn because Jamie is here to inspire YOU to cook and eat nutritious food.  On Friday, March 26th, “Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution”, a six-week series, premieres at 9:00 PM on ABC.  Jamie recreated his Ministry of Food project in the industrial city of Huntington, West Virginia where, like much of America, 34 percent (or more) of the residents are obese.  As in Britain, “Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution” hopes to start a reaction of positive change.  He simply wants to share the sense of pride, satisfaction and fun that comes from cooking with fresh ingredients for the people you love.  Ideally, the transformation of Huntington can serve as a template for the entire country.  Bless his heart.

Take action now

You can help Jamie’s grass-roots campaign by signing his petition to promote healthy food for children that he will deliver to the White House.  Need even more inspiration? Then grab a tissue and watch Jamie’s acceptance speech for the TED prize.  And since Jamie’s initiative is all about creating easy, fresh meals, he wants to pass along his recipe for basic “Jam Jar” salad dressing to make eating more salad and veggies a pleasure (not a chore!).  Enjoy!

Does Jamie Oliver have your support?

Yes, he totally has my support!  What a wonderful guy who is making a difference globally for children and adults' health!!!  Love it.

Absolutely.   I won't be watching the show because that's one of my ways of fighting obesity (no more TV - everyone has a weakness, that's mine), but you go Jamie.

Hello from Huntington WV! Yes, that's actually where I live.  But unlike the majority of the population around here, I already cook healthy and hit the gym for at least an hour 4-5 days a week.  I hope this "Food Revolution" will turn some people around, but I don't hold much hope in it in all honesty.   I am glad to see him target the youth group since they stand to gain the most from it. And the school lunch program needs a serious overhaul. He totally has my support and it will be very interesting to see whether this really generates much of a "healty eating" buzz around here. But with the increasing cost of (healthy/fresh) groceries, and the generally very low income around here....I'm afraid that the people around here who need it the most, will not even venture to take his suggestions into practice...and their kids will continue to grow up unhealthy.  And, btw, my husband has been a physical education teacher in the school system for 9 years and sees the direct effects of the poor eating habits and lack of exercise that these kids have learned. Something definitely needs to be turned around!  Here's to you Jamie - may you be successful where others couldn't!!!

I cannot wait for this show. And I am seriously crushing. That accent, the cooking, I mean... come on...

I have forwarded this information on his 6 week series to the PTA for the Grade schools and Middle schools in my area.  I have asked that they help promote awareness as well.  Jamie is a true advocate for the health of adults and children around the world and I ask that you do the same in your community.  In MN the schools have fast food in the lunchrooms.  Domino's Pizza, Dairy Queen, Pizza Hut, McDonalds and more.  It is rediculous that they can sell to the kids in the schools.  You can make a difference and help this revolution with grass roots one child at a time will change the world!

I have liked Jamie from the first time I saw him maybe 5 or 6 years ago on some Food Network show that he had and am excited to see him going more toward 'mainstream' America so they can like him, too! Jamie is married and has a kid or 2 but his wife has Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and so do I, so I feel like I could relate to him. How exciting!!

Jamie, good for you. Our school systems have long needed an overhaul. I apreciate the reciepes and also am always looking for a better food plan to stop the yoyo cycle. thank you

I like Jamie Oliver and his efforts to do something positive about the obesity problem in American is wonderful.  It all starts with the first step.  I can't wait to see his show on Friday.  Hope I can put some of the things into action.  But its the people that have to want to make changes and then put them into action.  Others can talk about it all they want but if the individual doesn't help & try to change its not going to happen but if it helps one person then its worth it. Go Jamie.

I think Jamie Oliver is great! I wish I had the resources to do what he is doing.  Being a part of his team would be awesome!!

I'm really proud of Jamie Oliver, he's british, a great chef, a dedicated family man and extremely generous with his time and commitment to charitable instituitions. His wife Jules indeed suffers from polysistic ovarian symdrome, never the less they have three daughters and baby number four is currently 'cooking' :o)

Jamie comes across as a totally genuine person on the TV,my daughter works for his Jme organisation, selling bakeware, smells and much much more. Profits from which go to support his '15' restaurants that are staffed by yougsters that have been given a 'second' chance and trained up to work in the kitchens etc.

All in all I think the world would benefit from a few more Jamie Olivers :o)

I just watched his acceptance speech for the TED award.  This man is truly inspiring...I hope is wish comes true!

His ideas are good, but he uses too much oil. He buys into the "olive oil is health food" propaganda. But he is certainly a step in the right direction.

Definitely has my support. School lunches are ridiculously unhealthy like everything else in this country.  My kids are gonna have lunches packed by daddy for school, LOL!!!

Great chef with great ideas!

I hope that more celebrities like Jamie Oliver find ways to help this society stay fit and fight obesity!

I am obese and have been trying to lose weight. My motivation is my children so I absolutely support him. I have already changed a lot about the way we eat and our physical  activity I have never heard of you before but you go. The schoollunch program definitely needs to be overhauled.

I am stoked about his program! I will forward the info on to our school board... we'll see what they choose to do with it. The school has cut back so much due to budget problems the menu is ridiculous. I am pulling my kids out this year to school at home and one of things I am SO looking forward to is eating lunch together. We can plant more and harvest our garden better, slow down and enjoy the seasonal offerings we've missed in the past being on the traditional school calendar. Jamie has the opportunity to change the direction of so many lives and I hope he does.

yes! he's always been my hero! :)

The elementary schools in our area do not have cafeterias or daily school lunches (you can order/buy a brought in lunch once a week... alternate between pizza, subs or pasta). I have a difficult enough time trying to get my kids to eat a healthy, balanced diet. I can't imagine trying to fight a chool system that pushed fried garbage at them too!

Jamie wasn't my favourite chef when I first saw him on Naked Chef... but this campaign is brilliant! This topic needs the attention that a celebrity chef can bring. Kudos!

i really love Jamie...also like his TV show....yup...i'll support his progrom all the way to a very healthy lifestyle and a really gud food....keep up the gud work Jamie...

to Bearable220--Good for you. It is very important to get your kids on the right track.  Eating healthy and exercising makes you feel much better and you are more efficient in your life.  Eating poorly puts you in a "food coma" so you do not even have any energy to exercise. To make your world and your kids world revolve around living and not around eating is a wonderful thing. Best of luck to you!

it takes for people like us to speak up and set the example too. we have to do our part to make sure his campaign doesn't fall on deaf ears. That's means getting our kids to eat healthy lunches, giving them those choices, making more people informed. harder than it sounds TRUST ME I KNOW but all I'm saying is we gotta try to do our part as proponents for something we believe in and want to see happen

can't wait to see the show and the receipes

What Jamie is doing in the US has already been tried in the UK. He made a big difference to the school dinners in the UK and it all started with a TV series. He is very passionate about the causes and his food.

It will be good to see what effect he has on America.

I think what Jamie is doing is awesome...it starts with one and hopefully many others will follow his example.  I'm glad he actually has the guts to flat out say that our youth are getting fat and unhealthy.  We need to stop being so sensitive and politically correct and face the facts.

Our children are suffering due to being shown poor eating habits, not only from parents but from schools as well.  He's absolutely right, you DON'T serve pizza for breakfast but schools often make that a choice on their menu.  We all love pepperoni but it's not exactly the healthiest topping on the menu...why not offer toppings like canadian bacon, chicken, or a veggie pizza?

Anyway, I hope his series opens the eyes of America and join Michelle Obama's crusade to developing a plan for a healthier lifestyle for our children.  This is a reality that needs to be faced and not criticized and as parents, we need to support it for our childrens sake.

Omg, I thought the same!!!!!! ;D

I watched Jamie on Oprah yesterday and he truly wants to make a difference. He is not about weight loss, althought that would certainly happen if these people heed his advice, he is trying to educate people to think about what is going into their bodies. If the kids see overweight parents with bad eating habits and no exercise, they will do the same thing. He showed how it is NOT cheaper to eat all of these unhealthy foods and how to make the foods you cook tasty and healthy and economical.  Of course he gets paid to do the series, but he is sincerely trying to help people and our future generations.

It is more than time to change our suicide mission in this great country. We will increase our productivity, happiness and we got to thank Jamie for all his great work. We got to make changes, we all got to be part of it, we got to urge Congress, and we got to urge Governors, State Senators and school board members, that we want only the best for our youth. As adults we have options, our school kids do not, we got to help.  Our young people are the future of our country, we got to demand only the best for them, and only a healthy and well educated youth assures a great future for all of us.

So, now that this series is over does anyone know the results of his effort?  I certainly admire his persistance on this topic.  It will be a long journey but one worth pushing through and travelling.

i support his petition and his idea especially about the school lunches. My kids don't like their school lunches and rarely eat and then after going all day without eating come home and rade the frige. I would really love to see his show if someone could post when it airs and i think this is a wonderfull site and it is really helping me lose weight. I only have 12 more pounds to lose and have been the hardest but it I know with the help and tools from this site i can do it.
