Fish, bread, wine... possibly some olives as well due to the geographical location of where he once lived.

Though, take that idea with a grain of salt, typically people only lived to be in their midfourties or so back then, so, it COULD be healthy, but try focusing on getting more greens as well...

Though, I could really go for some fish, bread and wine right now....

lol! so random!

well yeah, his time would have killed animals for meat, fished for fish, grown fruits and veggies, all natural, no convenient stores. homemade bread, yeah, wine would be a major drink, not nessicarily healthy in large amounts. Like direwolf said, they probably had less to eat and weren't as nutrition wise, so lived shorter lives.

wouldn't use him as a role model though lol when it comes to food

You should look into traditional Middle-Eastern cuisine.  It hasn't changed much in a couple of thousand years and it's a very exciting confluence of flavours and textures.   The region has always been a centre for trading and the cultural crossroads means that the food is a lot more varied and interesting than you might think..... dates and other dried fruits from the desert regions, almonds,  preserved lemons, olives, cous-cous, breads (unleavened), oils, spices from the East, fish (often preserved), and there are Mediterranean influences as well.   Chicken, lamb and goat meat have always been very popular.  As a Jew, Jesus would have observed the traditions and not eaten shellfish, pork etc.  Ancient wines and other fermented drinks were safer than the water but they weren't as powerful as the ones we have now.   The limitation at the time really was on what you could afford

You don't have to go back 2000 years, however, to have a healthier diet.  If you leave out most of the processed foods introduced in the last 50 or so years that's an excellent start.  Since Jesus didn't produce a cookbook how about getting hold of one by someone like Elizabeth David or Mrs Beeton?

Meat, veggies, bread, wine, cheese, fruit, rice, nuts, grains. Whole natural foods. Guarantee Jesus was not eating Big Mac's, diet coke and beef burritos.Wink

But there is ice-cream in the Bible.....

"Walls of Jericho"   (one for the Brits)  Wink

Chococlate chip pancakes.

Banana milkshakes.  Had to have come straight from the Big Guy....probably my favourite thing in the whole universe.

Edit:  ^^^ And the cc pancakes...clearly.

Wine was actually more of a grape juice...very low in alcohol if it had any at all.

I've heard of biblical diets.  You may want to google it if your questions hasn't been answered yet.

i thought jesus ate figs.  and fishes, of course.

and cass, there was definitely alcohol in the wine.  the fermentation process is a form of preservation and kills most bacteria.  it allowed drinks to be stored and transported, so when there was no water, there was wine.

In that day, wine was fermented (containing alcohol), but necessarily not to the degree it is today. It is incorrect to say that it was grape juice, but it is also incorrect to say that it was the same thing as the wine commonly used today.

Beer is man's oldest alcoholic beverage and was most certainly availible to Jesus as was wine.  And wine is/was wine.  Don't forget pomegranets which were also mentioned in the Bible.

Edit: Fermentation is the same today as it was then, there is no logical reason beer or wine would have been any different.  But distillation of spirits didn't begin until about 300 years after the time of Jesus.  Distillation results in a much higher concentration of alcohol in the beverage.

What Would Jesus Eat?

tom is right.  the amount of alcohol in a fermented beverage is proportional to the amount of sugar in the products you start with.  what's different is that now we have regulations, controls, and labels; historically, it would have been difficult if not impossible to predict how drunk you were going to get from any particular beverage ;)

but i think cass's point is this: Jesus was NOT a drunk!

Whole grains for sure.  Remember the unleavened bread baked by the Jews escaping Egypt?

Legumes (pulses) for sure.  Remember the pottage that Esau sold his birthright for? That was lentil soup.

Wine for sure - per the wedding at Cana and the last supper, and many other mentions.

Fish - absolutely - remember Jesus walking on the water in the sea of Galilee?  Did you know that the fish there are tilapia?  They are also called St. Peter's fish.

Olives are mentioned often as are dates and figs.  There would have been nuts like pistachios and almonds too because these are native to that region.

All meats would have been from animals with cloven hooves that chew their cud, per the Old Testament.

Milk and fermented milk products and cheese are all included.  I'm sure they had chickens and eggs too because of Biblical mention.

I'm sure that if you read the Bible you'll find lots more!  The dietary restrictions laid down in the first five books of the Old Testament tell it all.

"Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food." - Genesis 1:29

Why would you automatically assume that it must be good for you? That seems like quite the leap...

 My point exactly.  Thanks.

well, he wasn't going to the drive-thru and he wasn't shopping in the freezer section, so i don't think it's such a leap.
