I don't think you need hand-weights so much as to stop being so sensitised to your arms.  Wear your short sleeves with pride. If people are recoiling from your arms in horror as you pass down the street, fair enough... you're a freak.  But otherwise I expect that, in reality, your arms are no worse than anyone else's.

yeah, but i would like to feel comfortable.

Do push-ups.  Push-ups make great arms.

If you *really* want to give your arms a work-out, you could also try cuban presses (which are *evil* but effective) or the YTWL (also evil but effective).  These are exercises for which you actually do need light weights (because they're hard).  Use the heaviest weight you can handle for 10-12 reps.  For most people starting out, that'll be about 2-3 pounds.

YTWLs are the devil, and susie's right - you'll start with light weights for those.

Chinups (or pullups if you can) are also great for the arms.

Do some tricep exercises. It's pretty hard to target them, so do some dips or tricep curls.

Wearing short sleeves will give you more motivation to work on your arms. ;-)

Frankly, I hate women's tees nowadays cause they have those little tiny sleeves.  They really only look good on  little stick arms.  I have great muscular arms that don't fit in those tiny little arm holes, the fabric digs into my armpits!!!  So I wear small men's t-shirts or tank tops.  Much more comfortable and flattering.  You can go to express or abercrombie and still get cute little pink tees with nice designs on them in the men's section because of this whole metrosexual phase.  Icky on men but cute on me! lol

thank you agana!

.. and everyone else.
