I just found out yesterday that my company is not going to make it thru the depression recession. I have never lost a job in my entire life. We are depending on our customers, GM, Chry, Toyota, to help us thru the next 60 days. Ha - they can't even help themselves and Nissan has already pulled their tools out of our plants and gave the jobs to someone else.
If the rest decide to help us so that we do not shut down their assembly lines, for the next 60 days, our bank demands we be sold or file chapter 7. That is it... we have to be sold within 60 days! Only IF we succeed in getting help from our customers. I am sure that will bring down several of OUR suppliers. This is impossible.
My husband owns his own business doing low-voltage wiring.... which has slowed down to a crawl since the beginning of the year. GM announced 10K more job cuts... so there aren't any jobs around here at all... not to mention that if there is 1 job - there are thousands of people after it. I am so upset and do not know what to do.
The real estate market, well you know! The house I purchased 12 years ago is probably not even worth what I paid for... not to mention having spent thousands in finishing the basement last year, etc. So, it won't be easy moving out of state even if there are jobs out there... which there probably aren't.
Then - even if the rest of the country pulls out in the next couple years..... what is to become of MI? Will it just be a ghost town? Is it better to cut out now even at a loss? ..or better just to keep trying to make ends meet and pay the bills?
you poor thing. im not sure what to say. is there some sort of help group in your area since many people seem to be going through exactly what you are, just to let off some steam. or would that bother you? a friend of mine thinks they are just depressing whereas another has found some good support. another friend's brother lives in MI doing (or was doing) construction & they just had a new baby. his wife's english isn't too great either, so i doubt she'll ever be able to get a job. its very depressing.
That really just sucks big time. So many people are getting laid off, a friend of mine here in the Bay Area just got laid off (again!) and she's a single mom. There's just not much in the way of good news.
I'm sorry to hear this, wish I could offer more in the way of support.
Thanks to all of you for your support and for listening. I know this probably belongs in the lounge, but I find you guys much more helpful.
I am sure there are millions of other people going through the same thing. We need to fix this economy. I don't know how, but there is so much at stake for so many.
Thanks for letting me vent. In the meantime.... if anyone knows of a job for an IT Manager.... consultant, programmer.... heck anything, I'd be very interested!
Yogagirl,
So so sorry for the difficulties you're experiencing. I don't have any words of wisdom, but I just wanted to say how proud you should be of yourself for making health and fitness a priority. At least when everything around you seems to be falling apart, you have what matters the most: your health and your family! Okay, I know that sounds really cliche and it doesn't pay the bills, but my hat is off to you for what you've accomplished with your fitness goals. No matter what happens, keep on working out because that is one thing that you CAN control
.
Yogagirl I am so sorry. I don't know what to say expept I will keep you in my prayers. I am so scared about our economy too. I went to Circuit City today because there used to be a Verizon Wireless service center in there. The store was almost empty with boxes and paper all over the place and last minute close out sales going on. The Verizon center was gone too. I just can't believe this is happening in our beautiful country. I wish I could have confidence in the gargantuan stimulus bill just passed but I don't see how spending trillions on government programs is going to stimulate anything. We can hope though.
Maybe you can do consulting work for companies out of state but stay in your home. Send resumes everywhere. You can also offer services outside of your official area of expertise - ie, tutor for children, website design, whatever service you can think of, then place an ad on Craig's list and see what happens. If you are an IT person, maybe you can set up a skype (sp?) sytem so you could tutor remotely. That way you can tap into areas of the country where the unemplyment rate is not so high. I don't know. I'm just throwing ideas out there. I guess I want to say, don't despair, don't give up. Yes times are tough, but there is always room for entrepeneurship or a good idea. Good luck. Keep us posted.
I'm very sorry to hear that, yogagirl.
I hope this won't last long, and everybody's lives will go back to normal.
yogagirl, I'm so sorry to hear about your job.
laura had some good ideas. I hope you find something. You'll be in my prayers.
Awwhh...I'm so sorry! I can't imagine how that feels and it is so sad that there are so many people going through this right now! I think every day how this can't go on forever and somehow we'll all pull through! Hang in there and maybe just play it by ear. Maybe something totally unexpected will happen! I will be thinking about you guys!! I'm sorry.
Update - well this went down horrendously! Thursday we were told that Friday was our last day! Unbelievable. They are not even paying us our earned vacation! Everyone that was laid off earlier got their vacation and a severence. All we got was a boot.
There is something called a Warn Act that states they have to give at least 60 days notice to employees. They are getting by it by saying this was "unforseeable". HA - that is such a lie! They had bankruptcy auditors in there since the beginning of the year. I thought they were just normal auditors.
Anyway - I did not do my workouts all week as I had no energy left, but I made myself yesterday morning. I have to have a schedule. So I will get up at my normal time, shower, etc. get online and look for jobs, make phone calls, send resumes. ...and do my workouts.

Good for you. We are all here to support you, yogagirl (like you have supported many of us in our health quest). Many of us have friends and relatives in the same position and know the pain you are going through - my husband is also looking for a job.
Take advantage of the free resources at your local public library - business directories, resume and interview books, free online databases, etc.
Use this forum to vent and to post your successes and failures. We're here for you! Good luck!
There are a lot of resources out there, there may even be some support groups and so on that you can take advantage of. I think your idea of getting on a schedule is a good one, so you don't feel completely set adrift. Also, as we all know, working out can help so much on so many levels.
Oh gosh Yogagirl - I just read your post. I am saying prayers for you. With your specialty hopefully you can find a job where you can work from your home. You are so smart to keep your regular schedule. I am in MT, we have not really felt the recession considering I believe we are always in one!!
