Where does jogging end and running begin?

I ran into kind of a running snob at the gym the other day. I was doing my second workout at 6.0mph. Is that running or jogging? I'm not sure why the comment got to me but I'm having a sensitive week.

To me, anything that involves taking full strides is running. Jogging I think is more of a shuffle.  I guess it depends on how long your legs are... I am definitely running at 6 mph but i'm only 5'4". Props to you for being at the gym and exercising! who cares what she thinks? She's just trying to show how awesome she is, and failing miserably.

Running. I think of jogging as 4.1-5.5... but who cares! That guy/girl at the gym is just an insecure idiot who wants to feel better about themselves by making you feel bad.

I agree it all depends on your height, at over 6' 6mph is about as slow as i can go without looking silly. but who cares what they think...

The running snob was a guy! I thought he was really nice before, he was once getting off of the treadmill on which he'd sweated A WHOLE LOT and he wiped everything up spotless for me... but I was just plodding along and he made a quip about "oh well you're only jogging now, letting yourself go some?"

6mph is definitely a run for me! I'm only 5'1" and have a small frame, so I consider a "jog" to be about 4.6-5mph, and anything between 4-4.5mph is a fast walk. I usually run about 4-6 miles at a time (40 minutes to an hour) and I sure feel like I've been running. Hahah.

he said it half jokingly, but it seemed like he was disappointed in me! i do my primary workout at 5:35 am (roll out of bed, put on the jogging clothes, hit the treadmill) so that I'm a cooler cucumber and not so anxious when I wake up the kids. I sometimes do supplementary runs at 6mph but I mean it still looks like running to me!

I am not a runner --- although I do get on my treadmill and do a slow jog or intervals at times.  What I mean is I don't consider myself a rnner and I'm ot passionate about it, so to me it doesn't really matter what it's called.

But, I had heard tha it has to do with foot placement???? Maybe I'm wrong??? I thought if you were going along with your foot striking heel firt or mid-foot first it was jogging. 

I thought that running was ball of foot first, or maybe that's just sprinting.  I just always thought about it that way... 

A man huh?  Maybe that was his jokingly warped way of hitting on you...?

As far as I'm concerned one is either walking, running, or standing still.  I have no idea what jogging is.

I didn't really think there was a difference.  I alway say I'm going for a "jog"...but I usually am going at about and 8.5 minute mile pace.  Guess it's one of those you say tomato I say tomato kinda deals!

i always thought they were synonymous too.  funny though, someone earlier today said to me that they used to jog, until they built up to running, but that they don't do either now.  I was telling her that I jogged almost every morning this week (very new for me, i'm NOT a morning person).  I said 'jogging is the same thing as running', haha.

Also, I think the 'running snob' may not know as much as you think he does, so don't be intimidated!  An experienced runner would never, ever, use the word 'jog'.  We call jogging 'the J word';  it's what people did in the 70's while wearing velour track suits.   Smile

I'm 5'2, and anything 6.5 mph or more is a run

any thing less is a jog (4.5 mph-6 mph)

anything lower then 4.5 mph is walking

and 8.5-10 mph is a sprint

...

of coarse though, 5.0-6.0 mph used to be running for me... but now it's just WAY too easy, I feel like I'm slackin off at those speeds

I normally "run" at pace of 6.5-7.5 mph... usually averaging about 6.7-7.2 mph

If I do intervals then a pace of 5.5-6.0 mph is my "recovery" speed, while a pace of 8.0-10.0 mph is my fast/sprint speed

...

however I do hope to be able to run at a speed of 7.5-8.0 for a longer period of time!!

I think one day a couple of in shape fellows were running, when they passed by a slower, uncoordinated, running individual. Then in their arrogance called him a "jogger", since jog means more or less, a short, jerk movement. So, that individual started telling people he jogs, since he was optimistic about the comment and took no offense to it. Word spread and now we are here...

IMO if you are on your two feet and not walking or stationary, you are running. Whether at 5mph or 10mph.

hey all you short people - height and run speed are not necessarily related.  No more of this "I'm short so I'm slow" stuff!

The running vs jogging is different for everyone - it's personal.  For my husband, a jog is anything slower than an 8 minute pace.  For me, not so much.

I always just tell people I'm going for a jog, especially at work, because I don't really like to draw attention to it.  People who know me well and think to ask know what I really do.

I second Danielle! Just because you're short doesn't mean you can't run fast! I bet I'm shorter than all of you and I can keep an 8 minute mile pace! 

But, for me, job and running are the same... I can't go anything slower than a 10:30 mile pace without messing up my form... I end up putting too much pressure on my toes and end up with shin-splints. On a long and causual run, I'm comfortable at a 9 minute mile pace. When racing in the 2 mile, I try to keep a 7 minute mile pace, and in a 5k, somewhere around 7:30.
