Does anyone know why jogging in place burns significantly more calories than regular jogging?  Or is the activity browser wrong?

I checked the activity browser - seems jogging in place is the same as jogging at 5mph. I have no idea what speed "jogging - general" is but it would appear to be slower than 5mph. That's most likely the main difference - "general" assumes slower.

I looked on several places on the net for calories burned for myself for jogging in place and jogging. I found that for my stats (male, 37 yr old, 6'3", 195), I burn about 120 cal/10 minutes jogging in place and about 140 cal/10 minutes jogging outside. I've found that running outside definitely takes more work. When you jog in place, you're basically just lifting your legs up. When you jog outside, you have to use your legs to push yourself and all of your body weight forward which takes much more effort. Regardless, both are great exercises for burning through some calories.

Thanks!  I can make sense of it now...it hurts when things don't make sense Tongue out

There seems to be a general rule in the universe. If it is boring and can be done in your studio apartment; it burns fewer calories that something interesting that you have to do outside. Laughing

I think it also has something to do with the number of people who can see you-- the more people who can witness the unflattering way your bum jiggles when you're doing the activity, the more calories it burns!

Just a suggestion--

I recently bought the GoWear Fit/BodyBugg Device and found that jogging on my Rebounder/Mini-Trampoline was a Great calorie burner! Laughing

Without trying hard, I'll burn 7 cals a min. and up to 11 if I go fast... I listen to streaming Old Time Radio shows or  audio books and enjoy the privacy and fan, lol! No fear of bad weather or special clothes-- and a heel spur makes it's softer impact  a real help to me. Wink

I'm burning 7+ at 160+ lbs as a 47 yo female, 5'2"... If you are heavier or lighter, it will differ, naturally, so I include my stats for comparison.

NONE of my other cardio choices come close in calorie burning for me-- though running, etc. would, if I could do that. I couldn't last long enough to burn much, if my foot or condition allowed me to try! Wink
