I just joined a gym... Any suggestions?
I have no idea what to do once I get to the gym. What will be most effective? I don't want to stay on the treadmill the whole time.. What routines would you recommend ??
Pick a training goal for what you want to be able to do, and then pick any one from the List of weight training programs that supports that training goal.
I can give you more specific recommendations when you've picked out your own personal training goal ;)
Sometimes a gym will offer an introductory "class" of some sort. When I joined the Y they provided 2 free sessions with a trainer -- maybe your gym does something of the sort. I attended those as a TOTAL beginner and found them useful. I also went to a variety of classes they offered and found out what I liked - which was actually no classes and I prefered the solitary pursuits.
You're paying for variety (otherwise you'd be home or out walking/running/bicycling etc.) -- so make sure you get your money's worth.
What I was told when I recently joined was to do lots of resistance training on the machines, for your legs, your arms, your back muscles, etc. Try to do at least 20 repetitions on each machine. Then either the treadmill or recumbant bicycling for 20 - 30 minutes. Apparently, the resistance training helps you to lose most of your weight - more so than just a treadmill or bicycling. Good luck!
Although debs is right about resistence training being good for weight loss, I'd recommend avoiding the machines - they tend to not work the body as well or as safely as free weights. I know the dumbbells and barbells look more scary, and less shiny, than the machines, but the machines tend to force your body into unnatural positions that can cause more harm than good.
My biggest suggestion: Make sure you use it!!!
Strength training is great - regardless of your goals! Get help learning the proper use of equipment. Try to maintain good posture and form. And do NOT be afraid to ask questions about what you are doing. If you can afford it - I highly recommend a personal trainer (at the very least to get you started) if you are a complete newbie to strength training.
Many gyms have orientations available - so take advantage of them if they do.
Try classes if they are available!
HAVE FUN!
You should first of all check to see if your gym offers any sort of orientation that will show you how to safely use the equipment, both aerobic and weight machines. If you're doing it wrong, you probably shouldn't be doing it at all :)
I've gotten suggestions of doing 15 minutes on different machines, a treadmill, bike and elliptial, or try a class....it could be a surprise to you.
