jump rope?

Quote  |  Reply
im thinking about buying a jump rope.  they seem like they could be great for interval workouts, alternating with pushups, situps, etc.  Also, they work your legs rather well, i figure this has to be a good alternative for when a gym is not available as this is a staple in any boxers workout and look at the shape they're in.  anyone have any opinions or experiences with jump roping?

haven't done it in a while but i enjoy jumping rope very much. it's very vigorous, so i started out with sets of 100 jumps, ten sets with breaks in between. then i worked up to three minute intervals, then five minutes, soon i could jump ten minutes straight. it's also fun jumping on one foot, shifting your weight from one foot to the other, doing high jumps, doing fast low jumps, skipping, etc...endless possibilities.
ya do it, its great can get a bit dull when you push the 18-20 min long sesions, but eh so can running.
I swear by jumping rope.  It's one of the best workouts you can do.  It burns a ton of calories, works the legs, core, and arms, improves agility and footwork.  It's great.  Make sure to jump on a forgiving surface though.  No concrete or sidewalks, it'll hurt the joints.  Try parking lots or hardwood floors.  Helped me lose about 40 lbs.  Good stuf.
i just searched it and it burns 500+ an hour.. sounds good to me!

Hey jumping rope is a great exercise! I have gotten into the grove. I started out very clumsey but I have developed a skill (yes, there is a skill to jumping rope). I have built my endurance and can go for a LONG time now.

Its a great exercise for when you are traveling, when the weather is bad, or when you just have a few extra mins. I usually jump rope while watching TV or a movie- its a great distraction and I have found myself lost in the movie and jumping for the full 1.5hr many times.

I am not sure about the calories burn estimator on CC though, it seems pretty high. What do you other jump ropers think? Do you think that is reasonable or do you agree and think its a high estimate? Let me know!

You don't really even have to invest in a jump rope-- we fake jump rope in aerobic class all the time and for people like me who have shinsplints I don't even have to leave the ground to benefit a bit from the workout.
misreporter- thank you for a great idea.  You have got me thinking about that as a possibility for my "between  boot camp days".

I think the cc calc is probably right -- assuming that it's also right for aerobics, as cc estimates aerobics burns around the same, and I think jumproping gets my heart rate higher, actually.  A lot depends on how fast you jump, as well.

It's great to do it to music; following the beat helps me keep from tripping up.
