I give junkfood an inch and it becomes my ruler!

Quote  |  Reply

Every time I eat any TINY portion of junk food, I CANNOT stop. It's so good.

For example, the other day I got some chcocolate covered pretzels (yum) and was going to eat ONE serving...

I ate the whole bag.

And then some chocolate cake, and hot chocolate.

I eat a sweet and crave them even MORE afterward, any way to help combat the sweet tooth/carb/fat tooth?

i wish i knew :( i love junk food and i eat a little then i eat more and more until i realize what im doing :( lol

You are not alone with this issue. Some people can do the "keep a bag of Hershey's miniatures in the freezer and eat 1 every night after dinner thing"... and then there's the rest of us...

I find that I do much better when I don't have any of my "trigger" foods than when i try to have just a little bit..

What happens from a biological standpoint is (in a nutsell) the sugar (and some specific things in chocolate) causes a hormonal response in your body- first it triggers the release of endorphins (pleasure hormone) and then the double wammy, the insulin rush (the storage hormone), both of which leave you wanting more. This combination hormonal response is so strong in some people that we are almost powerless against it.

Now, that may sound a little dramatic, but the truth remains, it happens and being aware of this issue within yourself, you might make the decision to forgo the "trigger" food all together so as not to have to resist that temptation.

Do you have a roommate/boyfriend/person you live with that could help you NOT overdo it? Like, you give the bag to them, and they hide it from you, give you one when you feel right about it? Of course, that only works if you're levelheaded. I'd be breaking things.

that hormonal response gddrdld is talking about is left over from the days when humans had to forrage for food.  Anything calorie dense like sugar and fat creates cravings so you eat more of it to preserve the calories in the form of fat for the long periods of time when we might have to go without food (obviously no longer a concern).  To some extent its part of our biology to crave sugary fatty foods, even babies prefer those foods over other things.

Just remember, life stacks the deck but you deal the cards, will power!  :)

i hear ya bittersweet. i had 200 calories left to "spend" today. so i was going to have a chocolate chip cookie. one. i had 6. i feel sick. but they are gone now so i can't eat anymore lol.

i totally agree and i most definately love your quote at the top by the way. weight is a serious matter, and though junkfood is good it isn't good for you.

Did you pre-portion and put the bag away before eating any?  That's my best trick to avoiding junk food splurges.  The bag needs to be gone before I start eating - otherwise I do the "just one more" thing.
